From the library of Lord Mostyn, probably Sir Thomas Mostyn (1704-1758), 4th Baronet, (with his Gloddaeth Hall , Wales, library bookplate). Bookplate of Montreal collector Alberti G. Nicholls. Two small holes where a clasp had once been attached to the front board, a couple small marginal stains, sparse foxing, else very good. To which, Several late Letters are Annexed, to Eminent Protestant Divines Abroad, concerning the Nature of ourDifferences, and the Way to Compose them. London : Printed by T.N. for Hen ry Mortlock at the Phoenix in St. Paul's Churchyard, 1681. The Second Edition, Corrected. Pp. (2), i-xciv, [7], (1), [1]-449, (1). Small 4to, full brown calf with decorative tooled corners, narrow borders, raised bands with gilt lettering and trim to spine. Consisting of three parts: Part I: An Historical Account of the Rise and Progress of Separation; Part II: Of the Nature of the Present Separation; Part II: Of the Please for the Present Separation. These follow a rather lengthy preface by the author. Edward Stillingfleet (1635-1699), the English prelate and author, was consecrated in 1689 as Bishop of Worcester. He was well known for his many works concerning the Protestant Church. This particular volume was written when the author was the Dean of St. Paul's. Front hinge cracked, with calf very lightly worn, two small chips to head of spine, small bookplate to front paste-down, else aremarkably attractive copy. 500.00

The Fourth Edition, very much enlarged with many choice Cases, an d all such Statutes relating to this Subject as have been published unto this time. With an exact Table to the whole. Pp. (14),1-466,(16) of index and epilogue at rear. Large 8vo, half light brown leather with darker leather boards, with five raised bands and maroon title block to spine. An important volume dealing with ecclesiastical law, specifically in regards to last wills and testaments, written more for the layman than the legal scholar. This is the first major volume published in England dealing with the subject. Swinburne was, at the time of the publication of the first edition (1591), an occasional judge of the PrerogativeCourt at York. Front board detached, spine chi pped, boards heavily rubbed and edgeworn, some minor dampstaining to top edge, occasional browning and smudging throughout, else very good. 400.00
