"Le livre retrace pas à pas la vie aventureuse dePierre Dugua de Mons, gentilhomme saintongeais, né à Royan vers 1560, dans une famille noble, ralliée à la Réforme protestante. Sa jeunesse est marqu ée par la grande épreuve des Guerres de Religion auxquelles il prend part au service d'Henri de Navarre qui devient Henri IV. La paix revenue, il entreprend, malgré lopposition du ministre Sully, de redonner vie à l'ambition de la France de s'établir en Amérique du Nord, sur les terres découvertes au début du XVIe siècle par Verrazzano et Cartier. Nommé Lieutenant général en 1603 par Henri IV, il conduit en personne l'expédition qui, au prix de grandes souffrances, fonde les habitations de l'ile Sainte-Croix en 1604 et Port-Royal en 1605, berceau de l'Acadie. Samuel Champlain y participe, en qualité de géographe et cartographe. En butte à de nombreuses difficultés, il est privé de son monopole commercial, seul moyen de financer son projet. Un second monopole, d'un an seulement, lui permet d'envoyer Champlain établir une nouvelle fondation sur le fleuve Saint-Laurent : Québec nait en 1608. L'assassinat d'Henri IV, en 1610, qui marque le retour des affrontements entre catholiques et protestants, l'amène à renoncer à son titre de Lieutenant général en Nouvelle-France, en 1612. " This was one of the earliestmagazines published in the Maritimes area. It was chiefly literary, and re vealed a keen interest in local talent and a new local patriotism. For example, Goldsmith's The Rising Village was published in its pages and there were other "Original and Selected Matter on Literary and other Subjects" with"embellishments." A large double column monthly, its price of $4 "half in advance" was comparatively high. The magazine was printed by J. S. Cunnabell.
