Krummes, Steamer Stories : An Annotated Bibliography of Steamship Fiction, 1845-2012 p. 7.

A novel.

"Good-natured, incompetent, friendly, and lustful - at sixty the crony of college students and high-living officials - Vasco Moscoso de Aragao laments that his life as the son of a wealthy merchant has brought him no rank, degree, or title. So - though Vasco has never made a sea voyage - a friend gets him a licence as a ship's captain. Moving to Periperi in the suburbs of Bahía, he takes up with relish the life of an honored, retired old sea dog surrounded by nautical instruments, sea-going uniforms, and listeners eager for his "reminiscences" of the oceans and exotic lands that he has visited. Vasco is so endlessly and colorfully inventive that only a few of his canniest neighbors begin to suspect the truth.

When the northbound good ship Ita comes into Bahía with her captain dead, Vasco - the only licenced captain in the area - is dragooned into completing her voyage up the coast to Belém as master (with the understanding that he will be free to call on the first mate for all important decisions). On the voyage, Vasco enjoys himselt, whiling away the time in social activities and in pursuing a lady passenger of forty, to whom he becomes engaged. But deceiving sailors turns out to be not so easy as dazzling landlubbers, and what t happens then and thereafter is almost (but not quite) beyond belief." - from the dj.

Henry Walter Bates, b. February 8, 1825, Leicester; d. February 16, 1892, London), was an important mid-century English naturalist, whose main contributions centred around mimicry in the animal kingdom.

"The Naturalist on the River Amazons" was so important and highly regarded upon its publication, that Charles Darwin dubbed it to be among the best books of natural history travel-writing ever publishing in England.

"In the autumn of 1847 Mr. A.[lfred] R.[ussell] Wallace, who has since acquired wide fame in connection with the Darwinian theory of Natural Selection, proposed to me a joint expedition to the river Amazons, for the purpose of exploring the Natural History of its banks; the plan being to make for ourselves a collection of objects, dispose of the duplicates in London to pay expenses, and gather facts, as Mr. Wallace expressed it in one his letters, 'towards solving the problem of the origin of species'. [...] My companion left the country at the end of four years; [...] I remained seven years longer, returning home in July, 1959. [...] The part of the Amazons region where I resided longest being unexplored country to the Naturalist, no less than 8000 of the species here enumerated were new to science."- from the preface.

"'I sort of see you surrounded with fine-tooth combs, sandpaper, nail files, pots of varnish, etc. -- with heaps of used commas and semi-colons handy, and little useless phrases taken out of their contexts and dying all over the floor,' Elizabeth Bishop wrote upon learning a friendhad landed a job at The New Yorker in the early 1950s. Bishop published th e vast majority of her poems in the magazine's pages and her relationship with the magazine went back to 1933 and continued until her death in 1979. During forty years of correspondence, hundreds of letters passed between Bishop and her editors, Charles Pearce, Katharine White, and Howard Moss. In these letters Bishop discussed the ideas and inspiration for her poems whilesharing news about her travels and life in Brazil, while her editors offer ed generous support, commentary, and friendship. Their correspondence provides an unparalleled look into Bishop's writing process, the relationship between a poet and her editors, the internal workings of The New Yorker, and the process of publishing a poem. (BISHOP, Elizabeth). MARSHALL, Megan. Elizabeth Bishop : A Miracle for Breakfast. Boston and New York : Harcourt Mifflin Harcourt, 2017. First Printing. Pp. (11),[xii]-xv,(3),[1]-365,(1). 8vo, grey paper covered spine with black cloth boards, gilt lettering to spine. "'Since her death in 1979, Elizabeth Bishop, who published only one hundred poems in her lifetime, has becoem one of America's best-loved poets. And yet -- painfully shy and living out of public view in Key West and Brazil, among other hideaways -- she has never been seen so fully as a woman and an artist. Megan Marshall makes incisive and moving use of a newly discovered cache of Bishop's letters -- to her psychiatrist and to three of her lovers -- to reveal a much darker childhood than has been known, a secret affair, and the last chapter of her passionate romance with the Brazilian modernist designer Lota de Macedo Soares. These elements of Bishop's life, along with her friendships with poets Marianne Moore and Robert Lowell, are brought to life with novelistic intensity. And by alternating the narrative line of biography with brief passages of memoir, Marshall, who studied with Bishop in her storied 1970s poetry workshop at Harvard, offers the reader a compelling glimpse of the ways poetry and biography, subject and biographer, are entwined. Finally, in this intimate portrait of a life lived for -- and saved by -- art, Marshall captures the enduring magic of Bishop's creative achievement." - from the dustjacket. Contents: 1.
