11 ARMSTRONG, John Griffith. Studies in Canadian Military History, 1). Halifax Explosion and the Royal Canadian Navy : Inquiry and Intrigue. First Edition, hardcover in dustjacket.
UBC Press, Vancouver, 2002, ISBN:077480890x
ARMSTRONG, John Griffith. The Halifax Explosion and the Royal Canadian Navy: Inquiry and Intrigue. Vancouver / Toronto : UBC Press, (2002). First Pri nting. Pp [i]-x,3-248. 3 maps and 16 b&w photos in the text. 8vo, blue cloth with silver lettering to spine. Volume one in the Studies in Canadian Military History series. "The Halifax Explosion of 1917 is a defining event inthe Canadian consciousness, yet it has never been the subject of a sustain ed analytical history. Astonishingly, until now no one has consulted the large federal government archives that contain first-hand accounts of the disaster and the response of national authorities. Canada's recently established navy was at the epicentre of the crisis. Armstrong reveals the navy's compelling, and little-known, story by carefully retracing the events preceding the disaster and the role of the military in its aftermath. He catches the pulse of disaster response in official Ottawa and provides a compelling analysis of the legal manoeuvres, rhetoric, blunders, public controversy, and crisis management that ensued. His disturbing conclusion is that federalofficials knew of potential dangers in the harbour before the explosion, t ook no corrective action, and kept the information from the public. As a result, a Halifax naval officer was made a scapegoat and the navy received lasting, and mostly undeserved, vilification. This is a compelling read not only for military and naval devotees but for anyone who wants to understand one of the events that shaped Canada in the twentieth century." - from the dj. Chapters : 1. The RCN in Halifax - December 1917; 2. Towards the Unthinkable; 3. Halifax Tide; 4. Through the Grim Day; 5. Reaction and Recovery; 6. Of Sailors, Lawyers, Goats, and Newspapers; 7. 15 BANNISTER, Jerry Rule of the Admirals : Law, Custom and Naval Government in Newfoundland, 1699-1832. First Edition, Paperback
University of Toronto Press, Toronto, 2003, ISBN:0802086136
BANNISTER, Jerry. The Rule of the Admirals : Law, Custom and Naval Government in Newfoundland, 1699-1832. Toronto : "Published for The Osgoode Societyfor Canadian Legal History by University of Toronto Press", (2003). First Edition. Pp (8),[ix]-xix,(7),[3]-423,(9). With tables, diagrams and a few illustrations in the text. 8vo, art-illustrated cardcovers with black spine."The Rule of the Admirals examines governance in Newfoundland from the rul e of the fishing admirals in 1699 to the establishment of representative government in 1832. It offers the first in-depth account of the rise and fallof the system of naval government that dominated the island for more than a century. In this provocative look at legal culture in eighteenth- and nineteenth-century Newfoundland, Jerry Bannister explores three topics in detail: naval government in St. John's, surrogate courts in the outports, and patterns in the administration of law. He challenges the conventional view that early Newfoundland was a lawless frontier isolated from the rest of theAtlantic world, and argues that an effective system of naval government em erged to meet the needs of those in power. The Rule of the Admirals sheds light on one of the most misunderstood chapters in Canadian and British colonial history. Drawing on extensive archival research as well as a broad range of secondary sources, Bannister provides a groundbreaking reinterpretation of a critical period in the island's colonial development." - p.[i]. 17 BARKER, Ralph Children of the Benares : A War Crime and Its Victims. 1st UK in dj
Methuen, London, 1987, ISBN:0143423107
BARKER, Ralph. Children of the Benares : A War Crime and Its Victims. (London) : Methuen, (1987). First Edition. Pp (10)[1]-172 + 8 pages of photos. 8vo, grey cloth. Law 1355. "When the passenger liner City of Benares sailed from Liverpool on Friday, 13 September 1940 she was carrying 90 evacuee children from the bombed cities of Britain, bound under a government-sponsoredscheme for a safe haven in Canada. Her sinking by U-boat four days later, without warning, in total disregard of the plight of survivors and in defiance of international law, shocked and horrified the civilised world. Of 406people on board 256 were lost - including, at a first count, 83 of the eva cuee children. "In Britain and the Commonwealth the reaction was one of righteous indignation, accompanied by an intense desire for retribution. Nor was the propaganda value neglected, a broadcast by King George VI the day a fter the news broke being clearly directed at neutral America. 'The world,'he said, 'could have no clearer proof of the wickedness against which we f ight than this foul deed'. "Suspicions subsequently arose, however, that the British authorities had quite as much to answer for as the Nazis. Parentswho, despite many misgivings, had entrusted their children to the scheme w hen invasion threatened, began to ask questions when they learned that the promised naval escort had abandoned the convoy twenty-one hours before the Benares was sunk. Allegations that crew members rushed the boats, that emergency equipment had failed, and that the whole voyage had been undertaken under the blight of racial prejudice, demanded a formal investigation. But somehow this was avoided, and the scandal was successfully hushed up. "RalphBarker, after a vivid and poignant reconstruction of the disaster, turns h is attention to what really happened behind the scenes at the Admiralty andthe Ministry of Shipping. The result is a harrowing story of human fallibi lity and human survival." - from the dj. Very good in vg, unclipped dj. 30.00
