(12),xiii-xvi,1-127,(1), frontispiece, + 4 p. of black and white plates. 8vo, red cloth with black letteringto spine. "The Channel Tunnel is no longer a wild dream. It is a technical ly feasible proposition and economically sound. In a few years' time, Pariswill be only a four-hour train journey from London and cars will eb whiske d through to the Continent in well under an hour. It is, nevertheless, a vast project. In this new, comprehensive survey Deryck Abel abses himself on the extensive researches carried out from 1958 to 1960 by the Channel Tunnel Study Group. After an historical survey, covering the last 150 years, he explains the initiatives recently taken bny British, French and American interested parties. his technical survey includes teh conclusions of the geophysicists and an appraisal of engineering devices and techniques -- immersed tube, bridge, railway tunnel, road tunnel, rail-cum-road tunnel. He dealsalso with potential tunnel traffic and its conditioning factors, and final ly with the financial and legal problems involved. At a time when the Common Market and growing unity dominate European development, this book is an essential guide to a project that may well prove to be a turning point in Britain's relationship with the Continent." - from the dustjacket. 4 AITKEN, Hugh G.J. Welland Canal Company : A Study in Canadian Enterprise. First Edition in dustjacket.
Harvard University Press, Cambridge, Mass., 1954,
AITKEN, Hugh G.J. The Welland Canal Company : A Study in Canadian Enterprise. Cambridge, Mass. : Harvard University Press, 1954. First Edition. Pp (6),[vii]-ix,(3),-[1]-178,(2) + map. Another map in text. Tables, charts in text. 8vo, tan cloth, black lettering to spine. In the Studies in Entrepreneurial History series. "Among the transportation improvements of the nineteenth century in North America the Welland Canal occupies a position of uniqueimportance. Opened for traffic in 1829, the Canal provided a navigable wat erway around Niagara Falls, making it possible for ships to pass freely from Lake Erie to Lake Ontario. Its significance for the expansion of shippingon the Great Lakes can hardly he overestimated; in addition it played a vi tal roie in the rivalry between American and Canadian transportation routesfor the trade of the West, being designed initially as Canada's answer to the Erie Canal between Buffalo and New York. Enlarged no less than three times since its original construction, the Welland Canal continues in active use at the present day and promises to acquire even greater importance, both for Canada and for the United States, with the completion of the proposedSt. Lawrence Seaway. In this book Mr. Aitkcn relates the history of the pr ivate corporation which constructed the first Welland Canal and analyzes its operations and problems in detail. He focuses particular attention on theentrepreneurial group responsible for the inception and execution of the p roject, upon their partlv conflicting interests, and upon the way in which thev created an organization to their purposes. Mr. Aitken deals chiefly with problems of promotion, construction, finance, and management, and identifies the sources of the Company's principal difficulties: managerial inexperience, scarcity of capital, inadequate engineering skills, and political opposition. While the book is primarily a biography of the Company rather than of the men who composed it, considerable emphasis is laid on the influence of individuals upon the formation and execution of policy, particularly on the roles played by three men: William Hamilton Merritt, a mill owner and merchant in the Niagara peninsula, later an important Canadian politician; John B. Yates, a capitalist of Albany, New York, by profession a manager of lotteries; and John H. Dunnn, receiver general in the government of Upper Canada. These individuals are identified as the nucleus of the entrepreneurial group and an attempt is made to analyze their motives and appraise the functions they performed in the Company." (from the dj). Contents :Preface; 1. Upper Canada: The Inland Province; 2. Promotion; 3. Construction; 4. Finance; 5. Entrepreneurshp. Appendix : Revenue, Traffic, Costs, and Sources of Capital. 10 ANDERSON, Frank J. Submarines, Diving and the Underwater World : A Bibliography
Archon, 1975,
ANDERSON, Frank J., (comp.). Submarines, Diving, and the Underwater World: A Bibliography. Compiled and Edited by Frank J. Anderson. (Hamden, Connecticut) : Archon Books, 1975. First Edition. Pp (4),v-ix,(1),1-238. 8vo, blue cloth, gilt lettering to spine. “In one alphabetical sequence, over 1,500 titles (plus authors and cross-references) cover historical works, technicaltreatises, biographical memoirs, official documents, bibliographies, and f iction for all tastes and ages. One- half the entries deal with submarines in war, but as naval combat is no longer their only use, the submarine and diving in scientific research, engineering and oceanology, and recreation account for the other titles referenced. Fundamental information on topics as diverse as ocean currents, salinity, bottom mapping; underwater archaeology; physiological and psychological experimentation; drilling, mining, and construction; underwater photography, marine life, and scuba diving as a sport; are integrated here with the victories, rescues, and disasters of battle, and the salvage efforts made in times of war and peace alike.” - from the dj. “Works regarding the technological advances made in man's 'mastery' of the sea are listed; such as accounts of bathyscaphe probes, underwater drift voyages, Sealab living, and deep diving with the use of the aqualung. The ocean's contempt of man's 'mastery' is also recorded in the literature of submarine disasters and the subsequent rescue and salvage attempts. The books in this list range over a period of more than 400 years of man's attempts to use the underwater world for his own ends. […] The books listed arewritten in various languages with English-language books predominating. Th ere is a good representation of books in French and in German. A few titlesin Russian and Spanish are included, along with a token representation of Dutch, Hungarian, Japanese, Scandinavian, and Turkish language books.” – p.vii. 16 ANGUS, James T. Respectable Ditch : A History of the Trent-Severn Waterway 1833-1920. First Edition in dustjacket.

ANGUS, James T. A Respectable Ditch : A History of the Trent-Severn Waterway 1833-1920. Kingston / Montreal : McGill-Queen's University Press, (1988).First Printing. Pp. (5),[vi]-xiv,(2),3-455,(3), including plates. Illustra ted in black and white. 8vo, decorated brown cloth with black lettering to spine. "In some respects the history of the Trent-Severn Waterway resemblesthe history of Canada. One parallels the other. The same political and eco nomic tensions that have constantly beset the country can be identified in the canal's story: defence against American invasion, free trade versus tariff protection, private enterprise or government intervention, the problem of moving vast quantities of grain from the central plains to deep-water ports, freight rates, energy production and who should control it, and the obsessive preoccupation with federal and provincial responsibilities. What follows is a record of how these national questions affected the development of a waterway that the country could ill afford and only a handful of people wanted. Consequently, this is not a story about transportation or engineering. It is a book about politics -- the politics of dreamers." - from the dustjacket. Contents: I: The Colonial Years, 1833-41: 1.
