In what ways does this dependence i nfluence the conditions, forms, and outcomes of colective action in those small countries, including the occurrence of revolutions and the institutionalization of political systems? To answer these questions, Risto Alapuro focuses on the experience of Finland. He provides an insightful political, economic, and social history of the country since 1809. Then, using two key events - the first parliamentary elections with universal suffrage in 1907 andthe abortive revolution in 1917-1918 - he analyzes the unique factors that govern politics in a small, dependent country. Although Alapuro points to the distinctiveness of the Finnish case, he also raises questions that willopen a whole new realm of inquiry in the study of relations among small an d large countries." It is the story of a journey without motive - beyond the joy of traveling itself, which the author vividly communicates to the armchair traveler who rides with him through the silence of Arctic plateaus, the solitudes of the Swedish forests, across treacherous marshes and moors in a land of legendary giants, trolls, and hobgoblins." - from the dj. 13 BRUCE-CHWATT, Leonard Jan ZULUETA, Julian de Rise and Fall of Malaria in Europe : A historico-epidemiological study. First Edition in dustjacket
Oxford University Press,, London, 1980, ISBN:0198581688
BRUCE-CHWATT, Leonard Jan, and Julian de ZULUETA. The Rise and Fall of Malaria in Europe : A Historico-Epidemiological Study. (Oxford) : Published on behalf of the Regional Office for Eurooe of the World Health Organization [by] Oxford University Press, 1980. First Edition. Pp (6),[vii]-xvi,[1],+ 48pp plates. Maps. Index. 8vo, navy cloth, gilt lettering to spine. "Althoug h 'intermittent fevers' or 'agues' had retreated from northern Europe in the nineteenth century, southern Europe remained in the grip of seasonal epidemics of malaria until the 1950s. Endemic malaria has now disappeared from the whole of Europe thanks to the efforts of the countries concerned and the co-ordination and support provided by the World Health Organization. The publication of this book, written by two internationally known malariologists, coincides with the commemoration of the centenary of the discovery of the malaria parasite by Alphonse Laveran. The authors trace the biological origins of malaria on the continent of Europe, follow the course of this ancient disease, and outline its influence on historical events. The narrativecovers the period from the first description of intermittent fevers by Gre ek and Roman writers and physicians, through the Middle Ages, and up to thepresent time. The book is not only a historical record based on some new s ources but is also an epidemiological study of various geographical, climatic, entomological, socio-economic, and political factors that have contributed to the elimination of malaria as a serious public health problem in Europe. The authors describe in detail the organization and progress of malaria eradication programmes during the past quarter of a century in Greece, Italy, Spain, Portugal, Romania, Yugoslavia, and the USSR. The resurgence of malaria in Asia and the enormous prevalence of the disease in Africa are still matters of particular concern for the world, and the authors stress theserious menace now presented by malaria imported into many European countr ies from the tropics. The book is illustrated by a large number of photographs and drawings, many of them hitherto unpublished, and contains an extensive bibliography." (from the dj). Contents : 1. Introduction. 2. Bound by Hollingworth & Moss. Pp (6),2-410,(2). Paginated and printed on one side only. Thick, tall 8vo, gr een cloth, gilt lewttering to front and spine. Davis Collins. "This is the first study of the Russian Red Guard to be undertaken in a western country.Owing to circumstances it is based on fragmentary and incomplete sources a nd cannot be considered definitive. The origins of the organisation are traced through an investigation of the revolutionary experiences of and political theories developed in Europe, North America and Russia during the last three centuries. It is compared with various other forms of armed organisation in an attempt to define its nature. This is followed by a detailed summary of moves to create, and to prevent the formation of, Red Guard detachments in Petrograd, Moscow and many other locations in the area covered by the Russian Empire during 1917 and the first few months of 1918. A structuralanalysis of the Red Guard presents the most accurate information available at the moment about its constitutional and organisational structure and ab out the social origins, age, sex, nationality and political affiliations ofits members. This leads on to an assessment of the various roles it played during the revolutionary events of the period in question.
