9 AKAHA, Tsuneo Japan in Global Ocean Politics. First Edition in dustjacket
University of Hawaii Press , Honolulu, 1985, ISBN:0824808983
AKAHA, Tsuneo . Japan in Global Ocean Politics. Honolulu : University of Hawaii Press and Law of the Sea Institute, University of Hawaii, (1985). First Printing. Pp (8),[ix]-xii,[1]-224,(4). Text maps. 8vo, blue cloth. "National enclosure of the world's oceans is one of the most important global trends to have emerged during the second half of the twentieth century. Awareness of the real and potential value of the ocean and its resources and recognition of the growing s carcity of natural resources on land have promptednation-states to claim and exert control over wide areas of the hitherto u nclaimed oceans and their riches. Japan in Global Ocean Politics is a detailed study of a mighty ocean nation's reaction to the demise of the traditional ocean regime based on the principle of freedom of the seas and its adjustment to the emergence of a new order characterized by national ocean enclosure. Japan's traditional maritime interests, particularly shipping and fishing, defined the country's role in global ocean politics until the middleof the 1970s; its posture was reactive, and even recalcitrant, on most law of the sea issues. In 1976-1977 Japan changed its policy in favor of accep ting extended coastal jurisdiction for others as well as for itself. The author explains why and intricately describes the process of policy making that took place amid competing domestic and interna tional pressures. In accommodating its diplomatic, economic, and security interests Japan imposed a formidable task on its public and private sectors, one that was accomplished with innovative policy adjustments, particularly in the manner in which the territorial sea limit and fishery jurisdiction were extended." Chapters : 1. The International Political Economy of Ocean Management and Japan; 2. The First and Second United Nations Conferences on the Law of the Sea; 3. Japan's Fight against the Proliferation of Expansionist Coastal States' Claims; 4. The United Nations Seabed Committee; 5. The Caracas-to-Geneva Session of the Third UNCLOS; 6. Japan's 12-Mile Territorial Sea Decision; 7. The Soviet 200-Mile Fishery Zone and Japan's 200-Mile Fishery Zone Decision. With conclusion, appendix, notes, bibliography and index. ALEXANDER, David G. Atlantic Canada and Confederation : Essays in Canadian Political Economy. Compiled by Eric W. Sager, Lewis R. Fischer, and Stuart O. Pierson. Toronto : "Published in association with Memorial University of Newfoundland by University of Toronto Press", 1983. First Edition. Pp (5), v-xviii, (2), [3]-157, (1) including portrait frontispiece. With a few maps, tables & graphs in the text. 8vo (155 x 236 mm), blue cloth, with black map design and lettering to front, with black lettering to spine.

David George Alexander (b. April 1, 1939, Nanaimo, British Columbia -d. July 25, 1980).
See ENL I:37-8.

"The nine essays in this posthumous volume are linked by a recurring theme - an affirmation of the integrity and viability of the small society and culture in the economic blocs and political federations of the modern world.

Alexander maintained that there was an economic base for the provinces of Atlantic Canada in the resources of the region and the genius of its people. In these essays he launched an assault on the beliefs that hindered the develpment of that base while searching for policies necessary to sustain that society. He indicated Canadian trade policies. He stated that neither the date nor the fact of entry into Confederation offered an economic panacea for any of the Atlantic provinces - but that the question of political and economic accmmodation within the larger federation was critical.

Alexander's study of the rise and decline of the shipping industry in Atlantic Canada in the nineteenth century revealed a regional industry with resources, capital and entrepreneurial talent to compete successfully in international trade. It also reinforced his belief that subsequent regional disadvantages grew as much from institutional and political factors as from the unimpeded operation of comparative advantage and market forces.

The volume pleads for a stronger federalism based on the belief that the survival of the Canadian Confederation depends upon the rebirth of pride and self-respect among Canada's diverse peoples. These essays are part of that heritage and that rebirth." - the rear of the paperback edition.

19 ALVORD, Douglas On The Water : The Romance and Lore of America's Small Boats.. First Edition in dustjacket
Yankee Books, Dublin, New Hampshire , 1988, ISBN:0899091571
ALVORD, Douglas. On The Water : The Romance and Lore of America's Small Boats. Text and illustrations by Douglas Alvord. Dublin, New Hampshire : Yankee Books, (1988). First Edition. Pp (6),[7]-160. Oblong 8vo, brown cloth spine, brown paper-covered boards, with dark blue lettering to spine. Brice Douglas Alvord, (b. December 11, 1946, Portland Maine). "Small boats have always been an essential part of American life, but their social, historical, and cultural significance all too often has been overlooked. On the Water pays tribute to these boats and to their designers and builders. The book focuses on some of the watercraft that were introduced or are indigenous to America's eastern coast and waterways, and explores their history and evolution. Such traditional craft as the Grand Banks dory, the Adirondack guide boat, and the New Haven sharpie, as well as various styles of canoes, dinghies, and sloops, are described and depicted in finely detailed black-and-white drawings and beautiful full-color paintings. Beginning with an illustrated explanation of the basics of small boat design and construction, On the Water takes the reader inside the boat shops where history is built every day. Master boatbuilders share their thoughts and feelings about their trade, showing work in progress on re-creations of classic styles, or new designs inspired by traditional craft. "Necessity has been the commissioner of boat desgns, and specific local conditions and available materials the developer," writes Alvord. "Consequently, the seawortny Maine lobster boat has spawned many small power boats; the Chesapeake skipjack has inspired more than one fast pleasure boat; and both the eighteenth-century peapod and the canoe have influenced contemporary rowing oats. Most of these boats were developed hundreds of miles from each other, and the skills and designs were passed on largely by word of mouth, yet there is a common theme that seems tohave influenced boat design for centuries. Common sense and experience are the best teachers. Workbpats might be expected to be purely utilitarian, a nd their construction for the most part is straightorward and practical. But out of that simplicity often comes a sweet sense of beauty." The beauty that is a boat comes acoss to mariners and landspeople aiike in On the Water. Those interested in Americana also will appreciate the introduction to anart form that is as mucn a part of our country as are barns, folk crafts, and white-steepled churches." (rom the dj.
