1 ABRAHAM, Richard KERENSKY, Alexander Alexander Kerensky : The First Love of the Revolution. First British Edition in dustjacket
Sidgwick & Jackson, London, 1987, ISBN:0283994762
ABRAHAM, Richard. Alexander Kerensky : The First Love of the Revolution. London : Sidgwick & Jackson, (1987). First British Edition. Pp (8),[ix]-xii,(3),[1]-503,(1), frontispiece + 32 pp plates. Index. 8vo, yellow cloth, giltlettering to black panel on spine. "In July 1917, Alexander Kerensky succe eded Prince Lvov as premier of Russia's Provisional Government, which was estabJished after the February overthrow of Czar Nicholas II. Kerenskv was himself deposed later that year by Lenin's Bolsheviks, causing him fo flee to Paris where he became an active propagandist against the Soviet regime. In 1940, he emigrated to the United States, where he lived until his death in 1970. In this innovative biography, Richard Abraham offers a comprehensive analysis of Kerensky's politics and an intimate portrait of the man and his turbulent times. Tracing the course of Kerensky's career from obscure political trials to open, conspiraionai organizations, leadership, and finally exile, Abraham demonstrates that Kerensky was the representative and charismatic leader of the rank-and-file of the Russian intelligentsia. His prominence in 1917 was therefore no accident, but the fruit of his unremitting commitment to revolution, and of efforts which almost triggered a revolution as early as 1915. The author confirms that Kerensky played a crucial rolein forestalling any rallying of the Right before the October Revolution an d reexamines the accusation that he and his Socialist Revolutionary comrades were responsible for the horrors of the civil war. Kerenskv's belief in parliamentary democracy is evident in Abraham's concise account of his fiftyyears in exile. " (from the dj). Contents : Preface. 1. Inspector Kerensky 's Career. 2. 5 AKAHA, Tsuneo Japan in Global Ocean Politics. First Edition in dustjacket
University of Hawaii Press , Honolulu, 1985, ISBN:0824808983
AKAHA, Tsuneo . Japan in Global Ocean Politics. Honolulu : University of Hawaii Press and Law of the Sea Institute, University of Hawaii, (1985). First Printing. Pp (8),[ix]-xii,[1]-224,(4). Text maps. 8vo, blue cloth. "National enclosure of the world's oceans is one of the most important global trends to have emerged during the second half of the twentieth century. Awareness of the real and potential value of the ocean and its resources and recognition of the growing s carcity of natural resources on land have promptednation-states to claim and exert control over wide areas of the hitherto u nclaimed oceans and their riches. Japan in Global Ocean Politics is a detailed study of a mighty ocean nation's reaction to the demise of the traditional ocean regime based on the principle of freedom of the seas and its adjustment to the emergence of a new order characterized by national ocean enclosure. Japan's traditional maritime interests, particularly shipping and fishing, defined the country's role in global ocean politics until the middleof the 1970s; its posture was reactive, and even recalcitrant, on most law of the sea issues. In 1976-1977 Japan changed its policy in favor of accep ting extended coastal jurisdiction for others as well as for itself. The author explains why and intricately describes the process of policy making that took place amid competing domestic and interna tional pressures. In accommodating its diplomatic, economic, and security interests Japan imposed a formidable task on its public and private sectors, one that was accomplished with innovative policy adjustments, particularly in the manner in which the territorial sea limit and fishery jurisdiction were extended." Chapters : 1. The International Political Economy of Ocean Management and Japan; 2. The First and Second United Nations Conferences on the Law of the Sea; 3. Japan's Fight against the Proliferation of Expansionist Coastal States' Claims; 4. The United Nations Seabed Committee; 5. The Caracas-to-Geneva Session of the Third UNCLOS; 6. Japan's 12-Mile Territorial Sea Decision; 7. The Soviet 200-Mile Fishery Zone and Japan's 200-Mile Fishery Zone Decision. With conclusion, appendix, notes, bibliography and index. In what ways does this dependence i nfluence the conditions, forms, and outcomes of colective action in those small countries, including the occurrence of revolutions and the institutionalization of political systems? To answer these questions, Risto Alapuro focuses on the experience of Finland. He provides an insightful political, economic, and social history of the country since 1809. Then, using two key events - the first parliamentary elections with universal suffrage in 1907 andthe abortive revolution in 1917-1918 - he analyzes the unique factors that govern politics in a small, dependent country. Although Alapuro points to the distinctiveness of the Finnish case, he also raises questions that willopen a whole new realm of inquiry in the study of relations among small an d large countries." 17 ALLWORTH, Edward, ed. BRZEZINSKI, Zbigniew. RAEFF, Marc. Soviet Nationality Problems. Hardcover in dustjacket.
Columbia University Press, New York & London, 1971, ISBN:0231034938
ALLWORTH, Edward, ed. Soviet Nationality Problems. Editor: Edward Allworth.New York & London : Columbia University Press, 1971. First Printing. Pp. ( 4),[v]-xiv,(4),[1]-296. 8vo, brown cloth with copper lettered black title block to spine. "The nationality question was supposedly closed within the USSR over forty years ago. It has, however, been dramatically reopened by fresh generations of educated leaders emerging among all the major Soviet nationalities. They have made obsolete the old Russian-Communist policy of extending token recognition to nationality groups officially differentiated mainly by reference to variations in language, folklore, or costume. Economicadvance and disproportionate population increases among many nationalities have added impetus to this awakening. With self-determination the watchwor d in most other developing countries, it is evident that the Kremlin leadership now faces an array of modern problems in its old-fashioned empire. Simultaneously, social and technological changes are forcing the Soviet nationalities to reconsider courses of action crucial to their future. The present volume demonstrates the extraordinary range of nationality problems besetting the USSR. The issues are considered broadly and their possible resolutions are examined from both a contemporary and historical perspective. The authors scrutinize significant problems through the methodologies supplied by key academic disciplines. Research sources for nationality study are discussed in a bibliographical section; maps and tables summarize census and other current data about the nationality question." - from the dustjacket. ANDERSON, M. S. Historians and Eighteenth Century Europe 1715-1789. Òxford : Clarendon Press, 1979. First Edition. Pp (4),[v]-vi,(2),[1]-251,(1). Index. 8vo, blue cloth, gilt lettering to spine. "This book surveys the development, over the last two centuries or more, of historians' ideas and views about the most important issues in the history of eighteenth-century Europe. Some aspects of that history have aroused violent and prolonged controvers y which is still active today. Was the great French Revolution in some way immanent in the structure of the Old Regime in France and thus inevitable? Or was that structure fundamentally healthy and brought down in revolution only by the malice of dissident groups or by mere ill-luck? Was the Enlightenment a great movement of intellectual and therefore ot social and political liberation, or a destructive assault on the bonds which held states and societies together? These questions bit'terly divided contemporary observers: they still divide historians today. The character and achievement of thegreat 'Enlightened Despots' of the period and the origins of the Industria l Revolution in Britain are other controversial issues which bulk iarge in the book. In each case, on the basis of a wide-ranging survey of writing infive languages, the development of historians' thinking is analysed. The i nfluence on that thinking of the social, political and intellectual environment in which individual scholars worked, and the importance of deweloping ideas about the nature and scope of history in general, are stressed."
