5 ABENDSCHÖN, Simone Growing into Politics : Contexts and Timing of Political Socialisation
ECPR Press / European Consortium for Political Research Press, 2013, ISBN:1907301429
ABENDSCHÖN, Simone. Growing into Politics : Contexts and Timing of Political Socialisation. (Colchester, UK) : ECPR Press , (2013). Pp (4),[v]-x,(2),[1]- 280. 8vo, blue hardcovers. In the ECPR Studies in European Political Science series. "This book presents up-to-date empirical research on crucial questions of political socialisation. It suggests new approaches and answers to a classic, but still valid question of political socialisation research: 'Who learns what from whom, under what circumstances, and with what effects?' (Greenstein 1965: 13). The volume maintains that political socialisation is no universal or independent phenomenon, but one significantly shapedby the surrounding parameters of the society in which it is embedded. Ther efore, deficits in political socialisation research have become especially clear in light of political and societal changes over recent decades. The book contributes to two important discussions in the study of political socialisation: first, the question of the (relative) importance of socialisation agents and contexts, second - inextricably interwoven with the first - the timing of political socialisation. From a European perspective, articles in the volume shed light on old problems and topics of the field, using newmethodological approaches or dealing with long-neglected perspectives such as young children's democratic learning or political socialisation.. Inclu des quantitative approaches as well as innovative and explorative case studies." from rear cover. Contents : 1. Introduction: Political Socialisation in a Changing World (by Simnne Abendschon). 2. Parents and Children in the Political Socialisation Process: Changes in Italv Over Thirty-Five Years (by Piergiorgio Corbetta, Dario Tuorto, Nicoletta Cavazza). 3. Children's Political Socialisation within the Family: Value Transmission and Social Milieu Factors (by Simone Abendschon). 4. The Role of Schools in Preparing ] 6- and 17-?year-old Austrian First-Time Voters for the Election (by Steve Schwarzer and Eva Zeglovits). 5. Promoting Political Interest in Schools: The Role of Civic Education (by Gema M. Garcia-Albacete). 6. Emergence of the European Union in Upper Secondary Education: A Comparative Analysis of French, English, German and Cataionian History Textbooks (by Alexandre Blanc). 7.The Effect of Political Socialisation Agents on Political Participation Be tween the Ages of Sixteen and Twenty-One (by Ellen Quintelier). 8. The Socialisation Effects of Digital Media on Personal Autonomy Values (by Carol Galais). 9. Space, the Final Frontier of Political Socialisation Research: Geopolitical Contexts, Migrant Resocialisation and Political Remittances (by Ruxandra Paul). 10. ''Who is Ready to Vote at Sixteen?': New Perspectives in the Study of Political Reasoning (by Bernard Fournier). 11.
