Very good in dustjacket. 50.00 "Nineteen eighty-nine marks the fiftieth anniversary of the end of the three-year Spanish civil war, which broke out in 1936. The year before, the Spanish people had elected a Republicangovernment pledged to democratic reforms, but General Francisco Franco was determined to overcome the new government and its objectives. To that end, he became leader of a generals' revolt which was supported by the army, ai r force and navy, and equipped by the fascist dictators Adolf Hitler and Benito Mussolini. The Spanish people fought back heroically. Stirred by theirvaliant struggle, men and women from many countries flocked to Spain to jo in the Spanish Republican army. Some forty thousand volunteered to serve inthe Republic's International Brigades, the first army of its type in recor ded history. Canada's Mackenzie-Papineau Battalion, about 1,440 strong, formed part of the 15th International Brigade, itself made up of English-speaking volunteers. Among these young men and women were Canada's first dead inthe fight against fascism. They lie buried in unmarked graves, remembered by their comrades, and a part of Canadian history. The story of the Canadians who fought in Spain in defence of democracy is movingly retold by a man who was himself a volunteer. " (from front flap oif dj). "Histories and other literature abound about the three-year Spanish civil war, 1936-1939, principally because the conflict drew at least forty thousand volunteers from many different countries who deliberately risked life and limb to aid the cause of the people of another country. The journey to Spain was fraught with difficulties. For some it meant climbing the Pyrenees at night, eluding the rifles and dogs of French border guards. Others were torpedoed by an Italian submarine on their way to Barcelona. Yet others were jailed. The Canadians who fought in the Spanish civil war, most of them politically conscious members of the working class, were pitched against the better-armed fascist forces for nearly three years before World War II began. Their story is one of costly victories and bitter losses. At the end, the surviving Canadian volunteers of the 15th International Brigade and the Mackenzie-Papineau Battalion faced difficulties returning to Canada, where the government rejected the idea that the men had fought for democracy. The volunteers were rewarded for their heroism by the Canadian people, however. Thousands turned out to welcome home Canada's first anti-fascist soldiers who had written a vivid, exceptional and inspiring chapter in Canadian history." (from th eback panel of dj).
