1 Anonymous COX, Edwin Marion) La Troupe des Bons Enfans Assembles a L'Hotel des Ragouts
Chiswick Press, London, 1931,
Anonymous, prefatory note by Edwin Marion COX. La Troupe des Bons Enfans Assembles a L'Hotel des Ragouts. 1931: Chiswick Press, London. Pp. (2),[1]-18,(4). 12mo, blue cloth spine with pink paper-covered boards, title on paperlabel to front cover. A 1931 reprinting of the original. "The typography a nd paper, as well as the language of the presumably original edition in my possession, suggest the third quarter of the seventeenth century as the period of publication. [...] The text of this amusing production contains manyunusual words, which heighten the interest of what is a light-hearted eulo gy of food and drink and their concomitants. The 'Chanson Nouvelle' at the end is a cheerful attack on drinkers of water and their beverage and it hasa Bacchanalian swing in its verses, very appropriate to the end of such a banquet as has been described in the preceding text." -from the prefatory note. This edition contains a facsimile of the original title page (on whichthe full title reads "La Troupe des Bons Enfans, Assembles a L'Hotel des R agouts. Ou les Curieux des bons repas auront une satisfaction extraordinaire.") The final printed page of this edition reads "150 copies of this work have been printed on handmade paper. This is No. " but is unnumbered. Inscription in ink to ffep, binding starting to come loose at spine, some soiling to front, light sun damage to covers, wear to edges, else vg. 50.00

Curran a Dalhousie University scholar. MHRA Texts and Dissertations Volume 38; Bithell Series of Dissertations Volume 19. "Wieland's translations of Horace's Epistles, neglected until recently, demonstrate his skill in overcoming the bipolar relationship implied in the very idea of translation. Thanks to a strong, cosmopolitan fellow-feeling with the ancient poet,Wieland made judicious editorial choices in the areas of diction, prosody, layout, typography and scholarly apparatus. This most flexible of translat ors avoided collapsing the distinctions between his own world and Horace's,and achieved true communication with Horace, while simultaneously drawing the contemporary German reader into the dialogue. Translation techniques employed by Wieland's contemporaries are also discussed here, as well as Horace's reception during the period, and the tensions between originality and imitation, and between ancient hexameter and modern metres." - rear cover. "The following notes and drawings will immediately give to the experienced reader some very sound basic information about letters and the use of lettering. Here are principles free frompassing fashion that so often swamp good sense. Although most graphic desi gners and typographers rely on readymade letters in the forms of printing types, matrices on film and transfer sheets, nevertheless their choice of analphabet will be helped by a proper understanding of the art of letter des ign. Moreover since this booklet is equally concerned with the use of letters, with their arrangement into words, and into lines, it will perhaps interest all who are actively involved in the preparation of printed matter." -from the introduction. "The genius of A.M. Klein, one of Canada's greatest poets, reached new heights in the literary power and dignified prose of The Second Scroll. This book is at once historic and contemporary. Covering the period of the pogroms of 1917 in Russia to 1949 when the infant state of Israel was one year old, the events parallel those of the first scroll in the days of Moses. Through Uncle Melech, 'in whose veins runs the numbered dead their plasma,' we experience the exile, exodus, and return to the Promised Land. This is exciting fiction, through which runs an intricate arabesque of shimmering threads, infinite in number, rich, symbolic - a deeply moving book of great significance and gigantic and universal proportions." - from the rear cover of the 1961 NCL edition. MARCHE, Stephen. Love and the Mess We're In. (Kentville, NS) : Gaspereau Press Limited, Printers & Publishers, MMXII. First Printing. Pp. (16),17-259,(13), folding map inset laid. 8vo, printed grey card covers with black and olive lettering to front and spine, French flaps. "When Viv flies to BuenosAires for a secret liaison with Clive, there is no ambiguity as to their i ntentions -- adultery. But this is where conventionality terminates in Stephen Marche's new novel, 'Love and the Mess We're In', a work whose lyric richness and inventiveness skillfully embody the tumbles and turns of love ina postmodern age. Marche collaborates with award-winning typographer Andre w Steeves to create richly polyschematic book pages whose influences range from the interwoven texts, geometric shaping and pattern-making of Hebraic calligraphy, illuminated manuscripts and incunabular typography to the ordered tangle of a New York City subway map. Viv's husband, Tim, is Clive's best friend. A breakdown has landed Tim in a mental institution, seemingly beyond recovery. His collapse brings Viv and Clive together in their grief, at a loss to navigate the loneliness, guilt, lust and, perhaps, love which they discover in their unsettling and morally ambiguous new context. 'Love and the Mess We're In' is an evocative, lithe story of love and redemption infused with Marche's wit, insight and telescopic emotional range." - from the front flap. Very good. 20.00

Spadoni and Donnelly 2118.Book design by Harley Parker including printing in several colours. First published a limited edition handmade 'zine' in 1954. "'All remnants of European nationalism and individualism have been reduced to cosmic baby nowder The media are blowing a lot of the baby powder around the pendant cradle ofthe New Man today. The dust gets in our eyes.' Here is Marshall McLuhan in inevitable McLuhan style, introducing Counterblast. And Counterblast, firs t conceived twelve years ago and recently completely revised, may well prove one of the most significant of his works. On the one hand, it is a dress rehearsal of such books as Gutenberg Galaxy and Understanding Media, and, on the other, it is representative of the new directions McLuhan's thought has since taken. Counterblast is a fascinating summation of the methods through which McLuhan has been probing Western, and particularly North Americanconsciousness. Here is McLuhanism simplified, and explained: a McLuhan pri mer. And as the New Yorker once mentioned, 'Other observers have been content to repeat criticisms of industrial society that were formulated a century ago, as if civilization had been steadily emptied out since the advent ofthe power loom... McLuhan has dared to seek the cure in the disease.' Work ing closely with the designer of the book, Harlev Parker, McLuhan has created an extra-typographical 'happening', every page of which blasts at preconceptions. Counterblast disrupts visually, aurally — in every way. jarring our whole minds and in so doing forcing a renewed awareness of our creative abilities to make sense of our environment." - from the dj. 17 McLUHAN, Marshall PARKER, Harley, designed Counterblast. First British Edition in dustjacket.
Rapp + Whiting Ltd, London, 1969,
McLUHAN, Marshall. Counterblast. London : Rapp + Whiting Ltd, (1968). FirstBritish Edition. Pp (4),5-143,(1). 8vo, purple cloth, silver lettering to spine. Book design by Harley Parker including printing in several colours. First published a limited edition handmade 'zine' in 1954. "In 1911, Wyndham Lewis's BLAST heralded a revolution in the arts and the minds of men. Using unconventional typography, graphic design, and serious irreverence, BLAST proclaimed that centuries of tradition had been wrenched askew by rapid changes in society and by the dynamism of the machine. Now Marshall McLuhan sets off a COUNTERBLAST to tell us that we are again in revolutionary times. COUNTERBLAST is a manifesto and a book of revelations. Behind it is Dr McLuhan's thesis that innovations in technology, and especially in the communications media, radically alter not only our life styles buf our very reality, our perception of the world. But it is not his way to argue, traditionally, from A to B to C. The free- associative structure of this book - itself a departure from old notions of 'logic' - is constantly exploded by impudent headlines and boldly fractured graphics. The result is a dazzling and dizzying reading experience." from the dj. Very good in slightly nicked andrubbedunclipped dustjacket. 60.00
