If a country as limitless as this can ever be said to have posed for its portrait, certainly the photographer behind the camera wasAnsel Adams. And now he has given us this book. Here, in his prodigiously illustrated autobiography, completed just prior to his death in 1984, is Adams' testament of a life of dedication, adventure, achievement, remarkable friendships, plainspoken wisdom, and a concern for man and nature. It is a memoir of times spent with Alfred Stieglitz, Georgia O'Keeffe, Edward Weston, Nancy and Beaumont Newhall, Imogen Cunningham, Edwin Land, and so many more in the pantheon of the art and photography world. Here, not only in hisown words but also in photographs the world over (and many others never be fore pbulished), this extraordinary man steps forward to share with us his love of music, the beauty of the wilderness, loyalties and dreams, and thatclear-eyed vision that saw beyond the mountains the heart of America." - f rom the dustjacket. Another map in text. Tables, charts in text. 8vo, tan cloth, black lettering to spine. In the Studies in Entrepreneurial History series. "Among the transportation improvements of the nineteenth century in North America the Welland Canal occupies a position of uniqueimportance. Opened for traffic in 1829, the Canal provided a navigable wat erway around Niagara Falls, making it possible for ships to pass freely from Lake Erie to Lake Ontario. Its significance for the expansion of shippingon the Great Lakes can hardly he overestimated; in addition it played a vi tal roie in the rivalry between American and Canadian transportation routesfor the trade of the West, being designed initially as Canada's answer to the Erie Canal between Buffalo and New York. Enlarged no less than three times since its original construction, the Welland Canal continues in active use at the present day and promises to acquire even greater importance, both for Canada and for the United States, with the completion of the proposedSt. Lawrence Seaway. In this book Mr. Aitkcn relates the history of the pr ivate corporation which constructed the first Welland Canal and analyzes its operations and problems in detail. He focuses particular attention on theentrepreneurial group responsible for the inception and execution of the p roject, upon their partlv conflicting interests, and upon the way in which thev created an organization to their purposes. Mr. Aitken deals chiefly with problems of promotion, construction, finance, and management, and identifies the sources of the Company's principal difficulties: managerial inexperience, scarcity of capital, inadequate engineering skills, and political opposition. While the book is primarily a biography of the Company rather than of the men who composed it, considerable emphasis is laid on the influence of individuals upon the formation and execution of policy, particularly on the roles played by three men: William Hamilton Merritt, a mill owner and merchant in the Niagara peninsula, later an important Canadian politician; John B. Yates, a capitalist of Albany, New York, by profession a manager of lotteries; and John H. Dunnn, receiver general in the government of Upper Canada. These individuals are identified as the nucleus of the entrepreneurial group and an attempt is made to analyze their motives and appraise the functions they performed in the Company." (from the dj). Montreal & Kingston : McGill-Queen's University Press, (1997). First Edition, Paperback. Pp (8).[ix]-x,(4),[3]-273,(1). With maps and tables in the text. 8vo, grey, black and red cardcovers, black spine. Donald Harman Akenson FRSC, FRHS (b. May 22, 1941, Minneapolis, Minnesota). . "What would have happened if the Irish had conquered and controlled a vast empire? Would they have been more humane rulers than the English? Using theCaribbean island of Montserrat as a case study of "Irish" imperialism, Don ald Akenson addresses these questions and provides a detailed history of the island during its first century as a European colony. Montserrat, although part of England's empire, was settled largely by the Irish and provides an opportunity to view the interaction of Irish emigrants with English imperialism in a situation where the Irish were not a small minority among whitesettlers. Within this context Akenson explores whether Irish imperialism o n Montserrat differed from English imperialism in other colonies. Akenson reveals that the Irish proved to be as effective and as unfeeling colonists as the English and the Scottish, despite the long history of oppression in Ireland. He debunks the myth of the "nice" slave holder and the view that indentured labour prevailed in the West Indies in the seventeenth century. He also shows that the long-held habit of ignoring ethnic strife within the white ruling classes in the West Indies is misconceived. If the Irish Ran the World provides interesting insights into whether ethnicity was central to the making of the colonial world and the usefulness of studies of sixteenth- and seventeenth-century English imperialism in the Americas." -p. 16 ALBANESE, Catherine L. Nature Religion in America : From the Algonkian Indians to the New Age. First Edition in dustjacket.
University of Chicago Press, Chicago, 1990, ISBN:0226011453
ALBANESE, Catherine L. Nature Religion in America : From the Algonkian Indians to the New Age . Chicago & London : University of Chicago Press, (1990). First Printing. Pp (6),vii-xvi,1-267,(5). Illustrated. 8vo, blue cloth, gilt lettering to spine. "This ground-breaking study reveals an unorganized and previously unacknowledged religion at the heart of American culture. Nature, Albanese argues, has provided a compelling religious center throughout American history. In a book of remarkable originality and vision, Albanese charts the multiple histories of American nature religion and explores the moral and spiritual responses the encounter with nature has provoked throughout American history. Tracing the connections between movements and individuals both unconventional and established, Albanese treats figures from popular culture, such as the nineteenth-century Hutchinson Family Singers and almanac-version Davy Crockett, as well as historically prominent culture brokers, including Thomas Jefferson, Ralph Waldo Emerson, Henry David Thoreau, and John Muir. Just as there are variant understandings of what nature is, there are diverse nature religions. Moving beyond Algonkian Indians, Anglo-American Puritans, and Revolutionary War patriots, Albanese argues persuasively for a classic American double vision of nature, notably articulated by Emerson and Thoreau. On the one hand, nature was real, and Americans should live in harmony with it; on the other, nature was illusory, and they should master it with the power of mind. The conceptual crack between nature real and nature illusory dogged later Americans: Albanese explores nineteenth-century wilderness preservation and mind cure and turns her attention, too, to physical forms of ature healing in movements such as water cure, h omeopathy, and chiropractic. She goes on in the twentieth century to find that the quantum provides a powerful metaphor to fill the crack between contrary views of nature. And she discovers old and new together in politicallyorganized Greens and feminist followers of' the Goddess, who also share a common landscape with nature writer Annie Dillard and Bear Tribe founder Sun Bear, with Reiki initiate healers and practitioners of macrobiotics. Throughout Nature Religion in America, Albanese emphasizes those who have not been formally trained as theologians, ceremonial leaders, or ethical guides. She demonstrates that nature religion in America has flourished among a ca dre of people who have thought and acted for themselves. The first of its kind, this study is a preliminary guide to a vast and previously uncharted religious world."" - from the dj. Foreword, by Martin E. Index. 8vo, blue cloth, gilt lettering to brown panels to spine. In The History of Human Society series. "The epic story of American society, from pre-Colonial times to the end of the Civil War is unfolded here in a swift and sweeping synthesis. John Alden has sought primarily to put the multitudinous facets of the rich and varied past, so often separately studied by others, into a clear and just perspective. He begins with a notable chapter on the American Indians, and then goes on to the English, French, and other pioneers, emphasizing the educaitonal, religious and political heritageeach brought from Europe. He presents a swift and lucid picture of the Col onial Period, usually shown as an intricate morass of sectarian bickering. He puts the American Revolution, the writing of the constitution, and the opportune Louisiana Purchase into the panorama of world history. He shows how the aristocratic federalists were ousted by a second and more democratic revolution, the Jacksonian, and makes clear the powerful social forces at work. As the pioneers moved west, the very foundations of American society were altered. And the Civil War was a crucial social as well as political turning point" (from the dj). ALLEN, Charlotte Vale. Painted Lives : A novel. Toronto: Random House, 1990. First Printing. Pp. (8),[1]-307,(5). 8vo, blue paper covered boards, giltlettered purple cloth spine. The Toronto-born author's twenty-sixth novel. "At its center is Mattie Sylvester. Fiery, headstrong, and outrageous, Mat tie is the elderly widow of one of America's foremost artists, Gideon Sylvester. Living now in a rabling house on an island off the Atlantic coast, Mattie spends hours each day gazing out to sea, recalling a turbulent past whose memory still makes her tremble with rage. Mattie's routine begins to change, however, with the arrival of the deceptively plain and restraited Sarah Kidd, whome Mattie has hired as a personal secretary. An unlikely bond forms between the two women as, night after night, Mattie takes Sarah into her confidence, narrating episodes from her unusual past -- her precocious childhood and early independence in New York, her circle of artist friends in the 1920s, her ruthlessly charming husband, their sons... and finally, Mattie reveals to Sarah the shocking truth about the famous Gideon Sylvester." - from the dust jacket. Very good in unclipped dust jacket. Signed and inscribed by the author on the half-title page. 25.00
