"It's one thing to sign on for the long and lonely apprenticeship that is the life of a writer; most writers have, or eventually develop, a certain talen for that kind of solitude. But when it comes time to publish that first book, the experience of crossing the line from private to public space can be daunting -- even overwhelming. 'First Writes' explores the trepidations and trioumphs of becoming apublished author. In it, Canadian authors describe their 'first writes' by writing openly, sometimes scathingly, and often hilariously, of their expe ctations and insecurities, humiliations and triumphs at every stage of publication. In this collection, novelists, playwrights, poets, filmmakers, andshort story writers offer anecdotes, musings, and reminiscences on the oft en bewildering process of having a first book published." - from the rear cover. (10),xi-xx,(2),3-145,(3). 8vo, illustrated grey card covers with black and white lettering to front cover and spine, French flaps. Volume 2 in The Eridanos Library. "Thethree works presented in this volume are among the most signification expe riments in Japanese modern fiction. They combine the technioques of the novella, the diary and the impressionistic prose poem. In 'Hell Screen' we aregiven the Faustian tale of a court artist in feudal Japan who sells his so ul to complete a flawless rendering of Hell -- at the cost of his daughter's life and subsequently his own. 'Cogwheels', apparently completed on the very day Akutagawa committed suicide, is a diary in which the artist struggles with the fear of losing his mind. Fantasy has now become indistringuishable from reality as Akutagawa's magination loses control and the icily transparent figures of obsession spin through his mind like whirling cogwheels.'A Fool's Life' consists of poetic, exquisitely crafted jottings dealing w ith events of daily life: quotidian anxieties emerge in grotesque or distorted forms, mingled with elements of pure fiction, references to beloved authors and books, moral and philosophical reflections, parables and metaphors." - from the front flap. Index. 8vo, brown cloth, red lettering to spine, illustrated endpapers. "This is the story of the forgotten Kipling: 'Ruddy' the troubled youth eager to be accepted by Anglo-Indian society but too arrogant for his own good. A boy terrified of heat, darkness, and disease; a teenager who suffered a series of physical and mental breakdowns and turned to opiates for relief. A young man compelled to take dangerous 'night walks' into the native city of Lahore. This is Ruddy the breaker of taboos: who visited prostitutes; who wrote about love across the racial divide and wives who committed adultery in the hill-stations; who wrote sympathetically about the drunks and vagabonds of the British underclass. But when Kipling used his pen to attack figures in the highest tiers of the establishment, he became too scandalous for British India's comfort. At twenty-three, Ruddy left India to make a name for himself in literary London." (from the dj). Contents : Introduction: 'Seek not to question.' 1. 9 ALLWORTH, Edward, ed. BRZEZINSKI, Zbigniew. RAEFF, Marc. Soviet Nationality Problems. Hardcover in dustjacket.
Columbia University Press, New York & London, 1971, ISBN:0231034938
ALLWORTH, Edward, ed. Soviet Nationality Problems. Editor: Edward Allworth.New York & London : Columbia University Press, 1971. First Printing. Pp. ( 4),[v]-xiv,(4),[1]-296. 8vo, brown cloth with copper lettered black title block to spine. "The nationality question was supposedly closed within the USSR over forty years ago. It has, however, been dramatically reopened by fresh generations of educated leaders emerging among all the major Soviet nationalities. They have made obsolete the old Russian-Communist policy of extending token recognition to nationality groups officially differentiated mainly by reference to variations in language, folklore, or costume. Economicadvance and disproportionate population increases among many nationalities have added impetus to this awakening. With self-determination the watchwor d in most other developing countries, it is evident that the Kremlin leadership now faces an array of modern problems in its old-fashioned empire. Simultaneously, social and technological changes are forcing the Soviet nationalities to reconsider courses of action crucial to their future. The present volume demonstrates the extraordinary range of nationality problems besetting the USSR. The issues are considered broadly and their possible resolutions are examined from both a contemporary and historical perspective. The authors scrutinize significant problems through the methodologies supplied by key academic disciplines. Research sources for nationality study are discussed in a bibliographical section; maps and tables summarize census and other current data about the nationality question." - from the dustjacket. Contents: "Restating the Soviet Nationality Question" (Edward Allworth); "Patterns of Russian Imperial Policy Toward the Nationalities" (Marc Raeff); "Soviet Communism and Nationalism: Three Stages of a Historical Development"(Hans Kohn); "Political Implications of Soviet Nationality Problems" (Zbig niew Brzezinski); "Statutory Recognition of Nationality Differences in the USSR" (John N. Hazard); "The Mixing of Russians and Soviet Nationalities and its Demographic Impact" (Robert A. Lewis); "Islamic, or Local Consciousness amond Soviet Nationalities?" "For many generations in Newfoundland professional medical treatment was not readily available -- it was the responsibility of the whole community, with knowledge of cures and prevention being passed on from the community elders. The authors s ought to capture the changes through the voices of those who participated in them. Archon, 1975,
ANDERSON, Frank J., (comp.). Submarines, Diving, and the Underwater World: A Bibliography. Compiled and Edited by Frank J. Anderson. (Hamden, Connecticut) : Archon Books, 1975. First Edition. Pp (4),v-ix,(1),1-238. 8vo, blue cloth, gilt lettering to spine. “In one alphabetical sequence, over 1,500 titles (plus authors and cross-references) cover historical works, technicaltreatises, biographical memoirs, official documents, bibliographies, and f iction for all tastes and ages. One- half the entries deal with submarines in war, but as naval combat is no longer their only use, the submarine and diving in scientific research, engineering and oceanology, and recreation account for the other titles referenced. Fundamental information on topics as diverse as ocean currents, salinity, bottom mapping; underwater archaeology; physiological and psychological experimentation; drilling, mining, and construction; underwater photography, marine life, and scuba diving as a sport; are integrated here with the victories, rescues, and disasters of battle, and the salvage efforts made in times of war and peace alike.” - from the dj. “Works regarding the technological advances made in man's 'mastery' of the sea are listed; such as accounts of bathyscaphe probes, underwater drift voyages, Sealab living, and deep diving with the use of the aqualung. The ocean's contempt of man's 'mastery' is also recorded in the literature of submarine disasters and the subsequent rescue and salvage attempts. The books in this list range over a period of more than 400 years of man's attempts to use the underwater world for his own ends. […] The books listed arewritten in various languages with English-language books predominating. Th ere is a good representation of books in French and in German. A few titlesin Russian and Spanish are included, along with a token representation of Dutch, Hungarian, Japanese, Scandinavian, and Turkish language books.” – p.vii.
