4 ADRIAN, Arthur A. LEMON, Mark PUNCH Mark Lemon : First Editor of Punch. First Edition in dustjacket.
Oxford University Press, London, 1966,
ADRIAN, Arthur A. Mark Lemon : First Editor of Punch. London : Oxford University Press, 1966. First Edition. Pp. (8),[ix]-xiv,[1]-241,(1) + 8 pages ofb&w illustrations. 8vo, green cloth, gilt lettering to spine, top edge red . Arthur Allen Adrian (b. April 24, 1906, Moundridge, Kansas - d. October 21, 1996, Cleveland, Ohio). A biography of Mark Lemon (1809-1870), the firsteditor of Punch, published to celebrate the 125th anniversary of the found ing of the magazine in 1841. "A biography of Mark Lemon (1809-1870), the first Editor of Punch, has long been overdue, but Lemon has been fortunate inhis eventual biographer, Professor Arthur A. Adrian of the English Departm ent, Western Reserve University, Cleveland, Ohio, who has already shown hissympathetic understanding of the Victorian period in his life of Georgina Hogarth. Lemon is at last fully revealed as the man who was chiefly responsible for the survival of Punch in its early days, who edited the magazine for close on thirty years, and whose genial diplomacy and tact fused a miscellaneous band of writers and artists into the brotherhood of the Punch Table. Professor Adrian's researches have enabled him to present a fresh and absorbing picture of the early Punch collaborators; but he has done much morethan this. He has brought to light a representative Victorian of inexhaust ible energy and gusto, a prolific dramatist and author, an amateur actor famous for his Falstaff, the friend of Charles Dickens and Benjamin Webster, and not least a tireless philanthropist and public benefactor, whose own large family and generous temper kept him always impecunicous. It is a rich and readable study in Victoriana that Professor Adrian has given us to celebrate the 125th anniversary of the founding of Punch in 1841." (from the dj). Contents : Preface. 1. 'The Days of Glory'. 2. Hops, Chops, and Playbills. 3. Punch Is Born. 4. 'From Street Corner to Drawing-Room'. 5. Punch TableTalk. 6. Punch 'Jaunts and Jollities'. 7. Friends and Enemies. 8. "It's one thing to sign on for the long and lonely apprenticeship that is the life of a writer; most writers have, or eventually develop, a certain talen for that kind of solitude. But when it comes time to publish that first book, the experience of crossing the line from private to public space can be daunting -- even overwhelming. 'First Writes' explores the trepidations and trioumphs of becoming apublished author. In it, Canadian authors describe their 'first writes' by writing openly, sometimes scathingly, and often hilariously, of their expe ctations and insecurities, humiliations and triumphs at every stage of publication. In this collection, novelists, playwrights, poets, filmmakers, andshort story writers offer anecdotes, musings, and reminiscences on the oft en bewildering process of having a first book published." - from the rear cover. Pp (4),v-ix,(1),1-238. 8vo, blue cloth, gilt lettering to spine. “In one alphabetical sequence, over 1,500 titles (plus authors and cross-references) cover historical works, technicaltreatises, biographical memoirs, official documents, bibliographies, and f iction for all tastes and ages. One- half the entries deal with submarines in war, but as naval combat is no longer their only use, the submarine and diving in scientific research, engineering and oceanology, and recreation account for the other titles referenced. Fundamental information on topics as diverse as ocean currents, salinity, bottom mapping; underwater archaeology; physiological and psychological experimentation; drilling, mining, and construction; underwater photography, marine life, and scuba diving as a sport; are integrated here with the victories, rescues, and disasters of battle, and the salvage efforts made in times of war and peace alike.” - from the dj. “Works regarding the technological advances made in man's 'mastery' of the sea are listed; such as accounts of bathyscaphe probes, underwater drift voyages, Sealab living, and deep diving with the use of the aqualung. The ocean's contempt of man's 'mastery' is also recorded in the literature of submarine disasters and the subsequent rescue and salvage attempts. The books in this list range over a period of more than 400 years of man's attempts to use the underwater world for his own ends. […] The books listed arewritten in various languages with English-language books predominating. Th ere is a good representation of books in French and in German. A few titlesin Russian and Spanish are included, along with a token representation of Dutch, Hungarian, Japanese, Scandinavian, and Turkish language books.” – p.vii. 18 AYLING, Ronald and Michael J. DURKAN. O'CASEY, Sean Sean O'Casey : A Bibliography.
Macmillan, London, 1978, ISBN:0333113489.
AYLING, Ronald and Michael J. DURKAN. Sean O'Casey : A Bibliography. (London : The Macmillan Press, Ltd, 1978). First Edition. Pp (8),[ix]-xxiv,411,(1) + frontispiece + 4 leaves of illustrations. 8vo, blue cloth, gilt lettering to spine. "Following the familiar format of the excellent Soho Series ofauthor bibliographies, this book is a detailed and comprehensive checklist of all conceivable aspects of Sean O'Casey's published and unpublished wri tings, making it possible for the first time to survey and assess the wholeliterary range of his work. It lists his books and plays (with copious des criptive notes, drawing upon many unpublished manuscripts and letters, giving the full history of each major work), essays, short stories and poems, his contributions to books by other writers, his more than six hundred and fifty contributions to periodicals (including book reviews and letters), andhis recordings, radio and television broadcasts and ephemera. There is a s ection devoted to the many published translations of his work, a detailed listing of manuscripts and typescripts in the principal collections of his papers, and, finally, a section devoted to stage premières and notable stagerevivals of his plays and details of film versions of them. The descriptiv e commentary will be useful to the collector, as a detailed listing not only of first editions but of subsequent ones (some of them considerably revised but not, in fact, recognised as new editions in some cases even in the printed text). For the scholar, it will be an indispensable guide to the many revisions and rewritings of plays and prose writings: O'Casey, like Yeats, was an inveterate reviser throughout his career, but none of the existingliterary studies has yet given adequate attention to this facet of his wor k. Moreover, scholars and students will also be introduced to many occasional publications (often in obscure journals) not collected by O'Casey nor recorded in any published studies of his work. The compilers have been given generous access to the playwright's private papers and to the files of the publisher who printed all his dramatic writings throughout the major portion of his writing life. The result of more than twelve years' research work, the bibliography will be of great assistance not only to O'Casey scholars but also to the student interested in modern drama and/or Anglo-Irish literature who wants more information than can be at present obtained in any reference work, about a prolific author now properly regarded as one of the major dramatists of the twentieth century." – from the dj.
