When only eighteen, she left home for the United States to make her Broadway debut in The Boy Friend, and thus began her meteoric rise to stardom. Home is filled with numerous anecdotes. including stories of performing in My Fair Lady with Rex Harrison on Broadway and in the West End, and in Camelot with Richard Burton; ay ; her first marriage to famed set and costume designer Tony Walton, culminating with the birth of their daughter, Emma; and the call from Hollywood and what lay beyond. 11 BARR, James, Capt. Ferry Across the Harbor : The story of the North Vancouver Ferries. First Edition in dustjacket.
Mitchell Press, 1969,
BARR, James, Capt. Ferry Across the Harbor [dustjacket adds subtitle : The story of the North Vancouver Ferries]. Vancouver : Mitchell Press Limited, (1969). First Edition. Pp (5),vi-xi,(1),1-71,(1). Illustrated. 8vo, blue cloth, white lettering to front, plain spine. "From early morning until longafter midnight, in weather fair and foul, the North Van ferries churned th e waters of Burrard Inlet to link the north and south shores of the Port ofVancouver. At times they slipped over the dancing, sunlit, sheltered water s while passengers "took the air" before burying themselves in factories oroffice buildings for their daily duties. At other times they moved quickly but cautiously through fog that cut visibility to zero, then groped for th e ferry slip leads that would guide them to a brief docking to discharge and reload. Shuttling incessantly across the main traffic of the harbor in the path of mighty freighters that on miscalculation could easily have destroyed anyone of them, the ferries were guided skilfully and there was no instance of disaster by collision or any other cause. The skyline on the south side changed from forest to buildings, the port became world famous. Ships of the seven seas with strange flags and exotic ports of origin and destination came and went in an increasing stream; but oblivious to these more colorful momentary companions the faithful ferries went on ploddingly in unfailing, seamanlike performance of their nautical routines. Yet they were not without their moments and their stories, as witness this volume of recollections." (from the dj). Contents : Introduction; The early history; The Second Narrows Bridge; The years without a bridge; The night run; Fog; Accidents and a near miss; The passengers; The administration; Personnel; The Second Narrows Bridge replaced; The war years; The post-war period; The last tenyears. Tinsley Brothers, London, 1871,
BARRY, W. [William]. Moorland and Stream, with Notes and Prose Idyls on Shooting and Trout Fishing. London : Tinsley Brothers, 18, Catherine St., Strand, 1871. First Edition. Pp. (4),[i]-iv,[1]-299,(1). 8vo, maroon cloth withpressed decoration to boards, gilt lettering to spine. "The love of field sports is so Inborn in Englishmen, that even to those who seldom or never handle gun or rod a good book of hunting or shooting adventures has a fascination for which they would find it hard to account. There is a healthy, breezy, open-air freshness about such writings, and the descriptions of long tramps over heath and moorland are refreshing to the eity-pent man but the'socret of his satisfaction lies deeper, in that instinct of the natural man which may be either suppressed or left undeveloped, but which is seldom quite extinguished. [...] As long as Mr. Barry keeps to his gun and his fishing-tackle he is more than readable. [...] Let Mr. Barry carefuly avoid love-passages, so called, in any future work, and not attempt to be poetical. L et him eschew prose idyls and stick to his sportsman's craft." - from a review which appeared in The Spectator, November 18, 1871. Contents: I: Pictures from an Irish Moorland: 1. Shaun Ruadha; 2. 14 BEARDSLEY, Martyn. FRANKLIN, John). Deadly Winter : The Life of Sir John Franklin. Hardcover in dustjacket.
Naval Institute Press, Annapolis, MD., 2002, ISBN:1557501793
BEARDSLEY, Martyn. Deadly Winter : The Life of Sir John Franklin. Annapolis, MD. : Naval Institute Press, (2002). Pp. (9), x-xiv, (2), 1-272 + [8] p. of plates. Illustrated. 8vo, red cloth with gilt spine titles. "This fascinating and sometimes harrowing account of the life of the famous British explorer John Franklin examines his incident-filled and sometimes contentious career from his early days, when he fought at the battle of Trafalgar, to his last expedition to seek the fabled Northwest Passage when he vanished along with his men in controversial and mysterious circumstances. Though his name is perhaps one of the most significant in the many recent books written on Arctic exploration, no biography has appeared for over twenty years. Theories - many wild - continue to abound on the fate of his final expedition of 1845, while questions hang over his first Arctic overland expedition, when many men died of cold and starvation and Franklin himself was hours from death. The author has tackled these episodes in a fair and balanced way and, drawing on much recent research, settled many of the wilder theories. A significant part of the book is also devoted to Franklin the sailor and the man. He was present at two of Nelson's most famous battles, Copenhagen and Trafalgar, and sailed with the great navigator Matthew Flinders on the first circumnavigation of Australia. The book covers his governorship of Tasmania, and gives an insight into the corruption and political chicanery which finally drove him out. Franklin was married to two exceptional women, and through surviving letters and diaries we catch a glimpse of his relationship with the precocious but frail Eleanor Anne Porden, who died tragically young while he was away on an expedition. He subsequently married the strong-willed Jane Griffin, who won great admiration in her attempts to pressurethe Admiralty to step up their efforts to find her missing husband. While exploration and colonial history form the heart of the book, everyday life and relationships in Regency and Victorian England are skillfully interwoven and Franklin emerges sympathetically as a robust and honourable man, diligent in the pursuit of his country's interests." -- from rear cover. Vikas Publishing House Pvt Ltd, New Delhi, Bombay, Bangalore, Calcutta, Kanpur, 1979, ISBN:0706908074
BHUTTO, Zulfikar Ali. "If I am Assassinated".. With an introduction by PranChopra. New Delhi, Bombay, Bangalore, Calcutta, Kanpur : Vikas Publishing House Pvt Ltd, (1979). Second Printing. Pp (8),[ix]-xxxvi,[1]-234,(2). 8vo,black cloth, red lettering to spine. "This book nearly perished. It was bl acked out in Pakistan. Its publication was banned. The press in which Bhutto's counsel tried to have it printed was sealed. But anonymous enterprise smuggled it out of the "stinking death cell" in which the former President and Prime Minister of Pakistan Zulfikar Ali Bhutto wrote it, "with the paperresting on my knee." This book contains the text of a document presented b y Bhutto to the Supreme Court of Pakistan in his appeal against the death sentence passed on him by the Lahore High Court. The disclosures were too dangerous, too sensational for the Pakistan rulers to face publicly. He accused them of conspiring with a foreign power, of being bribed by it to overthrow him because of the popularity he enjoyed among his own people. He clearly hints at the USA and some other countries too. He names names and specific sums and makes his appeal a classic case of the accused putting the accuser in the dock. Bhutto knew Pakistan as no one else did, and impending death had made his insights even sharper; it also made him more fearless in tearing the veil off what went on in Pakistan under its 3 military Presidents, General Ayub, General Yahya, and General Zia. The result is the most revealing book on Pakistan to be published yet." (from the dj). Contents : Introduction. 1. White Paper or White Lies. 2. Misrepresentation. 3. "Warfare,"Rigging and Fraud. 4. The Election Commission. 5. The Government Machine. 6. The "Larkana Plan". 7. Rigged or Fair? 8. The Inner Cancer. 9. The External Crisis. 10. Death Knell. 11. Foreign Hand. 12.
