"Lunch at Scott's, a quiet game of golf, a routine social call on his chief M, convalescing in his Regency house in Berkshire - the life of secret agent James Bond has begun to fall into a pattern tha t threatens complacency … until the sunny afternoon when M is kidnapped andhis house staff savagely murdered. The action ricochets across the globe to a volcanic Greek island where the glacial, malign Colonel Sun Liang-tan of the People's Liberation Army of China collaborates with an ex-nazi atrocit y expert in a world-menacing conspiracy. Bond finds himself working in alliance with the beautiful tawny-blonde agent of a rival secret service in thestruggle to overpower this ruthless enemy who discards the unwritten rules of espionage. Stripped of all professional aids, Bond faces unarmed the mo nstrous devices of Colonel Sun in a test that brings him to the verge of his physical endurance. Incredibly, the author adds his own imaginative impetus to the Bond saga yet preserves all the excitement and eloquence, the pace and glitter of a vintage Fleming novel." (from the dj). 10 BURLESON, Clyde W Jennifer Project. First Edition in dustjacket
Prentice-Hall, Englewood Cliffs, N.J. , 1977, ISBN:0135099277
BURLESON, Clyde W. The Jennifer Project. Englewood Cliffs, N.J.: Prentice-Hall, (1977). Pp (4),5-179,(1) + 8-page central section of photos and drawings. 8vo, blue cloth. The story of CIA attempts to recover a Soviet G-class nuclear submarine from the bottom of the Pacific Ocean. With a cast of characters ranging from Henry Kissinger to Howard Hughes, and with detailed descriptions of the techniques of deep-sea recovery (with the Glomar Explorer), the book offers a fascinating look at the technologies and politics of Cold War naval rivalry. "On a cold, gray morning early in 1964 [sic], a Soviet 'G' or Golf Class submarine [K-129] left her berth in the sub pens and sailed away toward the rolling waters of the blue Pacific. The vessel and hercrew would never return. THe underwater ship was wrecked by a series of in ternal explosions, and sank to the botton in 17,500 feet of water. This unusual event - detechted by classifies U.S. underseas monitors - initiated a top secret CIA operation. Code named 'Jennifer,' [or Azorian] the project was to become one of the most enormous intelligence quests in the annals of spying. Before it was over it would bring together the top military, governmental, and industrial figures of our times to form a team capable of trulyremarkable technological triumphs. The mission was simple. Salvage the sub marine and its cargo for study! The need was great. Both the policy of detente and the on-going Strategic Arms Limitation Treaty talks necessitated our having a clearer concept of Soviet undersea craft and of the missles and other nuclear explosive devices carried on board. But the task was almost too difficult to consider. The CIA had to go where none had gone before - tothe deepest depths of the Pacific Ocean where the timeless depths cradled the shattered hulk in the blackness of eternal night. ANd they had to go there inside a carefully specified time frame so that the information gained from analysis could be pout to purposeful use in the upcoming negotiations. The Jennifer Project is the inside story of that operation. It is an in-de pth, behind-the-scenes complete revelation of a top secret CIA mission.' - from the dj. Very good in dustjacket. 30.00
