HOOD, Ronald Chalmers, III. Royal Republicans : The French Naval Dynasties Between the World Wars. Baton Rouge and London : Louisiana State UniversityPress, (1985). First Edition. Pp (16),1-221,(3). With a few b&w photos and tables in the text. 8vo, blue cloth, silver letering to spnie. An analysis of the forces that drove French naval officers toward antidemocratic movem ents in the years between the World Wars. ""In Royal Republicans, Chalmers Hood explores the forces that caused French naval officers to gravitate toward antidemocratic movements after the armistice of 1918. He seeks to explain their involvement in the Action Franc¸aise and in the breakdown of civil-military relations that helped decide the fate of the Third Republic in 1940. Hood shows that a variety of social and intellectual factors allowed for a stability of tradition and royalist sentiment in the navy in a period when the attitudes of mainstream French society were growing away from Cartesian and anti-republican beliefs. Only when the traditionally comfortable and carefree life-style of the naval officers was threatened did this rift between navy and nation begin to constitute a real danger to the French government. Static salaries and the rising cost of living after World War I provokedresentment toward resentment toward an initially unresponsive government that eventually boiled over in the summer of 1940. Royal Republicans comprises three sections. The first describes the social background of the French navy, emphasizing the elite grand corps, or line officers. These men were generally aristocrats in sentiment, if not always in fact. The extent towhich positions in the grand corps tended to remain 'in the family' especi ally prior to World War I, prompted one Frenchman to say that line officersconsidered themselves "the proprietors of the navy by hereditary means.' T he second section of the book describes the intellectual preparation of these officers. Although line officers could spend as much as three quarters of their careers at sea or in the colonies, they remained strong role modelsfor their sons. The wives ot these officers hoped to see their daughters m arry other naval aristocrats and their sons pass the rigorous entrance examinations for the École navale. Hard-won entrance to this prestigious navai academy signaled the beginning of an intense period of study, testing, and isolation deemed necessary for the demands of a post at the top of the strict naval hierarchy. In the final section of the book, Hood shows the ways in which the forces described in the first two sections contributed to the isolation of the French navy and shaped the activities of the line officers between the two world wars. Hood's study is broadly based on interviews with former naval officers, research in a variety of sources, including the archives of the French navy and the naval academy alumni society and sociological and political quantitative analysis. It illuminates the very interesting circumstances that prompted the French navy to challenge the very government that it was sworn to protect." - from the jacket. 7 MURAKAMI, Haruki BIRNBAUM, Alfred, trans. RUBIN, Jay, trans. Elephant Vanishes : Stories. First American Edition in dustjacket
Alfred A. Knopf, New York, 1993, ISBN:0679420576
MURAKAMI, Haruki. The Elephant Vanishes : Stories. Translated from the Japanese by Alfred Birnbaum and Jay Rubin. New York : Alfred A. Knopf, 1993. First American Edition. Pp. (11),[4]-327,(1). 8vo, black cloth spine withb white paper-covered boards, silver lettering to front board and spine. A collection of 17 stories written between 1980 and 1991 by the renowned Japaneseauthor. "When his novel A Wild Sheep Chase was published in 1989, Haruki M urakami was hailed in The New York Times as "a mythmaker for the millennium, a wiseacre wise man." With Hard-Boiled Wonderland and the End of the World - his second novel to appear in English - his reputation as one of Japan's boldest writers at work today was firmly secured. Now, with The Elephant Vanishes, we have his first collection of short stories. Murakami renders aworld in which an aura of surrealism pervades everyday life: cause and eff ect change place, memory and illusion change the shape of the present moment, the most ordinary thoughts and actions result in the most unexpected revelations and events. And so it is in these seventeen spare, mesmerizing, serenely funny stones. The narrator of the title story - obsessed with the unaccountable disappearance of an elephant from the local elephant house - thinks he may have glimpsed what only seems impossible . . . the protagonist of another story knows that she has taken part in an impossible reality when she telepathically slays a small green monster who has just proposed marriage to her . . . a store clerk's reply to a letter of complaint reveals the vast clutter of his own thoughts, at the center of which hangs his theoryof "The Nobility of Imperfection". . sleeplessness becomes a foretaste of death for a young mother. . . a man's life is invaded by TV People who may be illusory but nonetheless have a surer sense of what's really going on than he does. . . a young man invited into the carefully preserved room of a stranger's absent daughter begins to sense the armature of fiction beneath the malleable surface of recollection. The Elephant Vanishes invites us to see what might otherwise remain hidden: the sure existence of the inexplicable - both chaotic and comic - in the demure dailiness of life. It is a continually surprising, altogether remarkable collection of stories." (from the dj). Small remainder mark (a dot) to bottom edge, else very good in unclipped dustjacket. 150.00
