5 BUESCHEL, Richard M. Communist Chinese Air Power. First Edition in dustjacket
Frederick A. Praeger, Publishers, New York / Washington / London, 1968,
BUESCHEL, Richard M. Communist Chinese Air Power. New York / Washington / London : Frederick A. Praeger, Publishers, (1968). First Edition. Pp (6),vii-viii,(4),3-238,+ 32 pp plates. Index. 8vo, olve green cloth spine, lettered in gilt, red paper-covered boards. "The Chinese People's Liberation Army Air Force (PLAAF), which started in the 1930's with one patched-up Douglas 0-2 MC 4 aircraft that could not get off the ground, is now one of the world's major air forces. Yet little is known of its extremely rapid development and its present strength. This first history of Communist China's air armfinally fills a serious gap in Western knowledge. Drawing on such varied s ources as the U.S. National Archives, records and reports of observers in Hong Kong and Formosa, and Communist publications, Richard M. Bueschel presents a thorough study of the aircraft, the performance, the capabilities, and the personnel of Communist China's air force and the role it has played in the country's history. He supplements and illustrates his text with more than eighty photographs, including several never before published in the West. Mr. Bueschel's historical account, which ranges from the period preceding the civil war up through the Sino-Soviet dispute and the Cultural Revolution, is filled with fascinating information, as well as some surprising incidental details. The author describes the Communist struggle in the 1930'sto build an airforce one plane at a time, under constant harassment by the Nationalists, who succeeded in destroying virtually every airplane the Com munists managed to ohfain. He provides a vivid report of Mao Tse-tung's first ride in an airplane - a USAF Douglas C-47 donated to the Communists by the United States in 1945. And he reconts the long-secret story of Russia's violation of treaty agreerfements at the end of World War II, when she helped the Chinese Communists seize Japanese aircraft in Manchuria. This historical section of the book, which also includes a thorough survey of Chinese air action in the Korean War, closes with a description of the present status of aircraft design and construction i China, and a look at future prospects for the PLAAF. In the second half of the book, entitled "The Aircraft of Communist China," Mr Bueschel bsurveys in detail the more than 100 aircraft types used by the PLAAF since its beginning - copies of early British Avro biplanes, American Mustangs, MiG's, Salamandra gliders, B-29's, Ilyushintransports. Besides describing their appearance, dimensions, and capabilit ies, this section traces the uniiKeiy histories and odysseys of some aircraft types—such as those that found their way into PLAAF service although they were designed for use in France in World War I, and the many U.S. and Japanese aircraft captured and adopted by the Chinese Communists after having benn used against tem. The author also deals with the increasing number of aircraft types being constructed by the Chinese themselves, and their efforts to design their own aircraft—developments that mark the coming of age ofCommunist Chinese air power." "This book was written about a ship and the men who served in her. It does not pretend to be a naval historical document nor a novel. It is really a memorial, which at the same time tells a story about Canadians who served at sea some forty years ago.

Athabaskan's story has been recorded here by two men, one of whom served in her as a Leading Telegraphist and the other an ex-member of the RCAF whose brother was lost in the ship. Their sources of information are many and varied -- diaries of men who were lost, official Allied and enemy records, and personal interviews with surviving members of Athabaskan's company." - from the introductory note.

"Coercion is what counts in diplomacy today. It lurks everywhere, even in 'special relationships'. It surfaces in most disputes. But coercion depends less on power, than on the ability to put it to appropriate use. This is particularly true at sea, where David often defeats Goliath. Butcoercion is just as relevant to everyday diplomacy, even if this is being ousted by the dangerous concept of crisis-management, as it is to such opendisputes as the Falklands, Gibraltar or Hong Kong.
