"This study of Jakarta presents the first general history of the city. It follows two main themes. One is the clash between dream and reality. For nearly 400 years, governments have wanted Jakarta to be the show-piece for their policies in the Indonesian archipelago. From 1619 until 1949, the Dutch saw the city as a European enclave displaying the gifts of good government and modern technology which they brought to their East Indies. After independence, President Sukarno lavished attention on his capital, hoping to make it the pride of the nation and the Beacon of the New Emerging Forces. Since Sukarno's fall, the New Order Government has channelled investment into Jakarta and carried through extensive modernization plans in line with its general aim of economic development for Indonesia. This book looks at the consequences of those centuries of policies for Jakarta, and in particular for the vast majority of its inhabitants who have always been too poor to fit into plans for the city.

The other main theme is the rich complexity of Jakarta's population. For centuries the city grew relatively slowly, and immigrant groups of Chinese, Arabs, Europeans and Indonesians from all over the archipelago mingled to produce unique cultural forms. In the last 40 years, that intricate web has been torn apart by political changes and massive waves of Indonesian immigrants who are still struggling to create their own urban culture in a predominantly rural country." 6 AKAHA, Tsuneo Japan in Global Ocean Politics. First Edition in dustjacket
University of Hawaii Press , Honolulu, 1985, ISBN:0824808983
AKAHA, Tsuneo . Japan in Global Ocean Politics. Honolulu : University of Hawaii Press and Law of the Sea Institute, University of Hawaii, (1985). First Printing. Pp (8),[ix]-xii,[1]-224,(4). Text maps. 8vo, blue cloth. "National enclosure of the world's oceans is one of the most important global trends to have emerged during the second half of the twentieth century. Awareness of the real and potential value of the ocean and its resources and recognition of the growing s carcity of natural resources on land have promptednation-states to claim and exert control over wide areas of the hitherto u nclaimed oceans and their riches. Japan in Global Ocean Politics is a detailed study of a mighty ocean nation's reaction to the demise of the traditional ocean regime based on the principle of freedom of the seas and its adjustment to the emergence of a new order characterized by national ocean enclosure. Japan's traditional maritime interests, particularly shipping and fishing, defined the country's role in global ocean politics until the middleof the 1970s; its posture was reactive, and even recalcitrant, on most law of the sea issues. In 1976-1977 Japan changed its policy in favor of accep ting extended coastal jurisdiction for others as well as for itself. The author explains why and intricately describes the process of policy making that took place amid competing domestic and interna tional pressures. In accommodating its diplomatic, economic, and security interests Japan imposed a formidable task on its public and private sectors, one that was accomplished with innovative policy adjustments, particularly in the manner in which the territorial sea limit and fishery jurisdiction were extended." Chapters : 1. The International Political Economy of Ocean Management and Japan; 2. The First and Second United Nations Conferences on the Law of the Sea; 3. Japan's Fight against the Proliferation of Expansionist Coastal States' Claims; 4. The United Nations Seabed Committee; 5. The Caracas-to-Geneva Session of the Third UNCLOS; 6. Japan's 12-Mile Territorial Sea Decision; 7. The Soviet 200-Mile Fishery Zone and Japan's 200-Mile Fishery Zone Decision. With conclusion, appendix, notes, bibliography and index. A few penned page numbers on end-paper, else very good in lightly worn dustjacket. 40.00

AKUTAGAWA, Ryunosuke. Hell Screen / Cogwheels / A Fool's Life. With a foreword by Jorge Luis Borges. [Introduction by Kayuza Sakai. Introductory note translated by Eliot Weinberger. "A Note to a Certain Friend" translated by Beongcheon Yu.]. (Hygiene, CO): Eridanos Press, (1988). Pp. (10),xi-xx,(2),3-145,(3). 8vo, illustrated grey card covers with black and white lettering to front cover and spine, French flaps. Volume 2 in The Eridanos Library. "Thethree works presented in this volume are among the most signification expe riments in Japanese modern fiction. They combine the technioques of the novella, the diary and the impressionistic prose poem. In 'Hell Screen' we aregiven the Faustian tale of a court artist in feudal Japan who sells his so ul to complete a flawless rendering of Hell -- at the cost of his daughter's life and subsequently his own. 'Cogwheels', apparently completed on the very day Akutagawa committed suicide, is a diary in which the artist struggles with the fear of losing his mind. Fantasy has now become indistringuishable from reality as Akutagawa's magination loses control and the icily transparent figures of obsession spin through his mind like whirling cogwheels.'A Fool's Life' consists of poetic, exquisitely crafted jottings dealing w ith events of daily life: quotidian anxieties emerge in grotesque or distorted forms, mingled with elements of pure fiction, references to beloved authors and books, moral and philosophical reflections, parables and metaphors." - from the front flap. Archon, 1975,
ANDERSON, Frank J., (comp.). Submarines, Diving, and the Underwater World: A Bibliography. Compiled and Edited by Frank J. Anderson. (Hamden, Connecticut) : Archon Books, 1975. First Edition. Pp (4),v-ix,(1),1-238. 8vo, blue cloth, gilt lettering to spine. “In one alphabetical sequence, over 1,500 titles (plus authors and cross-references) cover historical works, technicaltreatises, biographical memoirs, official documents, bibliographies, and f iction for all tastes and ages. One- half the entries deal with submarines in war, but as naval combat is no longer their only use, the submarine and diving in scientific research, engineering and oceanology, and recreation account for the other titles referenced. Fundamental information on topics as diverse as ocean currents, salinity, bottom mapping; underwater archaeology; physiological and psychological experimentation; drilling, mining, and construction; underwater photography, marine life, and scuba diving as a sport; are integrated here with the victories, rescues, and disasters of battle, and the salvage efforts made in times of war and peace alike.” - from the dj. “Works regarding the technological advances made in man's 'mastery' of the sea are listed; such as accounts of bathyscaphe probes, underwater drift voyages, Sealab living, and deep diving with the use of the aqualung. The ocean's contempt of man's 'mastery' is also recorded in the literature of submarine disasters and the subsequent rescue and salvage attempts. The books in this list range over a period of more than 400 years of man's attempts to use the underwater world for his own ends. […] The books listed arewritten in various languages with English-language books predominating. Th ere is a good representation of books in French and in German. A few titlesin Russian and Spanish are included, along with a token representation of Dutch, Hungarian, Japanese, Scandinavian, and Turkish language books.” – p.vii.
