2 ADKINS, Roy, and Lesley ADKINS. ADKINS, Lesley NELSON, Horatio War for All the Oceans : From Nelson at the Nile to Napoleon at Waterloo. in dj.
Viking, New York, 2007, ISBN:9780670038660
ADKINS, Roy, and Lesley ADKINS. The War for All the Oceans : From Nelson atthe Nile to Napoleon at Waterloo. (New York) : Viking, (2007). First Print ing. Pp [i]-xxvi,[1]-534,+ 16 pp plates. Maps. Index. 8vo, blue paper covered boards, gilt lettering to spine. "From its very first page, The War for All the Oceans is an adventure story—a superb account of the naval war thatlasted from Napoleon's seizure of power in 1798 to the War of 1811 with th e United States. Most naval histories stop at Nelson's death at the Battle of Trafalgar in 1805.. Yet the Royal Navy took on almost every other nationthat had a rival fleet: the French, Spanish, Dutch, Danes, Russians, Turks and Americans. Shipping routes all over the world were guarded to ensure that trade with Britain was not interrupted, and, as Napoleon lost his empire, Britain formed solid, imperial foundations—all because the British navygained control of the oceans. Roy and Lesley Adkins bring this naval war t o life, writing about its heroes, ship maneuvers and shipboard life with equal relish. They paint a brilliant picture of the large fleet actions of the war, such as the battles of the Nile and Copenhagen; duels between pairs of ships, such as the HMS Shannon and USS Chesapeake; and combined naval and army operations like the disastrous Walcheren expedition. They provide aringside seat to the earliest attacks with torpedoes and rockets and a fr esh look at our own country in a brilliant rendering of the War of 1811, fought in our nation's infancy. As in Nelson's Trafalgar, the Adkinses delight in the details, drawing vivid portraits of the sailors as well as the press-gangs, prostitutes and spies who populated this epic war." - from the dj. 3 AKAHA, Tsuneo Japan in Global Ocean Politics. First Edition in dustjacket
University of Hawaii Press , Honolulu, 1985, ISBN:0824808983
AKAHA, Tsuneo . Japan in Global Ocean Politics. Honolulu : University of Hawaii Press and Law of the Sea Institute, University of Hawaii, (1985). First Printing. Pp (8),[ix]-xii,[1]-224,(4). Text maps. 8vo, blue cloth. "National enclosure of the world's oceans is one of the most important global trends to have emerged during the second half of the twentieth century. Awareness of the real and potential value of the ocean and its resources and recognition of the growing s carcity of natural resources on land have promptednation-states to claim and exert control over wide areas of the hitherto u nclaimed oceans and their riches. Japan in Global Ocean Politics is a detailed study of a mighty ocean nation's reaction to the demise of the traditional ocean regime based on the principle of freedom of the seas and its adjustment to the emergence of a new order characterized by national ocean enclosure. Japan's traditional maritime interests, particularly shipping and fishing, defined the country's role in global ocean politics until the middleof the 1970s; its posture was reactive, and even recalcitrant, on most law of the sea issues. In 1976-1977 Japan changed its policy in favor of accep ting extended coastal jurisdiction for others as well as for itself. The author explains why and intricately describes the process of policy making that took place amid competing domestic and interna tional pressures. In accommodating its diplomatic, economic, and security interests Japan imposed a formidable task on its public and private sectors, one that was accomplished with innovative policy adjustments, particularly in the manner in which the territorial sea limit and fishery jurisdiction were extended." Chapters : 1. The International Political Economy of Ocean Management and Japan; 2. The First and Second United Nations Conferences on the Law of the Sea; 3. Japan's Fight against the Proliferation of Expansionist Coastal States' Claims; 4. The United Nations Seabed Committee; 5. The Caracas-to-Geneva Session of the Third UNCLOS; 6. Japan's 12-Mile Territorial Sea Decision; 7. The Soviet 200-Mile Fishery Zone and Japan's 200-Mile Fishery Zone Decision. With conclusion, appendix, notes, bibliography and index. AMADO, Jorge. Home is the Sailor : The Whole Truth Concerning the Redoubtful Adventures of Captain Vasco Moscoso de Aragao, Master Mariner. Translated from the Portuguese by Harriet de Onís. New York : Alfred A. Knopf, 1964. First American Edition. Pp 298. 8vo, blue cloth, gilt lettering and decoration to spine, gilt JA device to front board.

Krummes, Steamer Stories : An Annotated Bibliography of Steamship Fiction, 1845-2012 p. 7.

A novel.

"Good-natured, incompetent, friendly, and lustful - at sixty the crony of college students and high-living officials - Vasco Moscoso de Aragao laments that his life as the son of a wealthy merchant has brought him no rank, degree, or title. So - though Vasco has never made a sea voyage - a friend gets him a licence as a ship's captain. Moving to Periperi in the suburbs of Bahía, he takes up with relish the life of an honored, retired old sea dog surrounded by nautical instruments, sea-going uniforms, and listeners eager for his "reminiscences" of the oceans and exotic lands that he has visited. Vasco is so endlessly and colorfully inventive that only a few of his canniest neighbors begin to suspect the truth.

When the northbound good ship Ita comes into Bahía with her captain dead, Vasco - the only licenced captain in the area - is dragooned into completing her voyage up the coast to Belém as master (with the understanding that he will be free to call on the first mate for all important decisions). On the voyage, Vasco enjoys himselt, whiling away the time in social activities and in pursuing a lady passenger of forty, to whom he becomes engaged. But deceiving sailors turns out to be not so easy as dazzling landlubbers, and what t happens then and thereafter is almost (but not quite) beyond belief." - from the dj.

"This book probes the depths of the new underwater world andexplains its important geographical features and also comments in detail u pon the vasi resources lying under the sea. It focuses upon the urgent needfor for all the countries to explore and exploit this vast storehouse and discusses how this need has already expressed itselt in claims of various littotoral states over their coastal sea-bed and matters arising out of the Continental Shelf Convention of 1958. It underscores the vague and uncertain definition of the legal Continental Shelf and describes the extent of national jurisdiction over the coastal sea waters under the present law as well as the divergent views in this regard. It analyses es the conflicting interests of diverse groups of states and tries to determine what the limits of national jurisdiction should be. It also examines the vast area of the sea-bed beycnd these limits—as yet considered an area of "no-law"—and describes how this legal vacuum is sought to be filled and what kind of international machinery may be established id for early and order | y exploitation of what the United Nations has designated as the "common heritage of mankind". It suggests how mankind can develop international law into a law of co-ooeration in this ne new field and thus use the untold wealth of the oceans to meet the challenge of poverty in the World."om the dj).
