ANDERSEN, Lis. Lis Sails the Atlantic. Illustrated. London: Rupert Hart-Davis, 1953. First Mariners Library Printing. Pp. (6),7-191,(1), + 8 p. of black and white plates. Illustrated. Map. Small 8vo, tan cloth with blue device to front board and blue lettering to spine. The Mariners Library No.22. "Lis Andersen was a little girl of eleven when her family set off from Copenhagen in the Monsunen, an old fishing ketch, and sailed a figure-of-eight across the Atlantic by way of Buenos Aires, Tristan da Cunha, Cape Town, theWest Indies, New York, and so home to Denmark again. She was a shrewd and observant child, and this book, written when she was twelve, is a fresh andlively account of the things she saw and enjoyed: for instance, they caugh t a shark, 'Then we hit it on the head until it was dead and cut it open tosee if it had eaten any sailors recently.' There is no less gusto in her d escription of her visit to Tristan, the whale-flensing in South Africa, andthe glories of Coney Island. The sea held few terrors for Lis, and althoug h she is the youngest author in the Mariners Library, she is far from beingthe least seamanlike." - from the dustjacket.
