1 ADAMS, Eleanor N. Yale Studies in English, 55 Old English Scholarship in England from 1566-1800. in dj.
Archon Books, New Haven, CT, 1970,
ADAMS, Eleanor N. Old English Scholarship in England from 1566-1800 . [New Haven, CT]: Archon Books, 1970. Pp. [1]-204,(4). 8vo, blue cloth with gilt lettering to spine. Yale Studies in English, volume 55. "When Old English was a spoken language there was no scholarship, in the strict sense. How andwhen did the study of the language and literature of Old English begin and what obstacles did it meet in its development? The first old English book was published in 1566 and the first professorship of the language in an English university was established in 1795. This study has considerably wider implications than its title might imply. It connects a literary movement ofa peculiar kind with the general political and religious history of Englan d. In a broader sense, it touches upon all men - in what are they interested, and why, at a given time? how do they learn? how do they build upon the past?" - from the dj. Top edge spotted, a bit musty, small damp spot to front board, name stamp, else vg in dj. 65.00

Pp (12),[1]-435,(1) + 24 pages of b&w photos. 8vo, blue paper-covered boards, copper and metallic blue lettering to spine. "Normandie ! Never has a ship so beautiful ssailed the seas. Not only was she the largest, the fastest, and the most technologically advanced ocean liner of her time, she was the last word in elegance - a "floating palace" — the "queen" of the thirties. Now, on the fiftieth anniversary of her launch, Harvey Ardman has told the many stones of Normandie : the determination that brought her to life from the aeptns of the Depression; the scientific breakthroughs that made possible her size and speed; her bold and imaginative designers; the remarkable artistic achievement that made her the last great expression of Art Deco and the most sumptuously decorated vessel ot her time;her rivalry with the Queen Mary and the super sporting events from which s he emerged the winner of The Blue Ribbon of the Atlantic three times; the men and women — the rich, the beautiful, and the famous who traveled aboard her when ships were the only way to cross; the role she played in the events of her time and the events themselves; and her much lamented, tragic end on American shores where she may have been a foreigner but one greatly loved and admired. Not only does Ardman alter and add to what is generally known about Normandie, he corrects the errors perpetuated over the decades and provides surprises for ship buffs and general readers alike. A long overduetribute complete with black and white photographs and eye-witness accounts , here is lively social history married with verve and scholarship to the biography of a great lady, Normandie ! BANNISTER, Jerry, and Liam RIORDAN (eds.). The Loyal Atlantic : Remaking the British Atlantic in the Revolutioary Era. Toronto / Buffalo / London : University of Toronto Press, (2012). First Paperback Edition. Pp (6),[vii]-xxi,(5),[3]-318,(2). Maps. Index. 8vo, art-illustrated card covers, lettered in black and white. ""Adding to a dynamic new wave of scholarship in Atlantic history, The Loyal Atlantic offers fresh interpretations of the key roleplayed by Loyalism in shaping the early modern British Empire. This cohesi ve collection investigates how Loyalism and the empire were mutually constituted and reconstituted from the eighteenth century onward. Featuring contributions by authors from across Canada, the United States, and the United Kingdom, The Loyal Atlantic brings Loyalism into a genuinely international focus. Through cutting-edge archival research, The Loyal Atlantic contextualizes Loyalism within the larger history of the British Empire. It also details how, far from being a passive allegiance, Loyalism changed in unexpected and fascinating ways - especially in times of crisis. Most importantly, The Loyal Atlantic demonstrates that neither the conquest of Canada nor the American Revolution can be properly understood without assessing the meanings of Loyalism in the wider Atlantic world." Illustrated. Index. 8vo, black cloth, gilt lettering to spine. Vol. 12 in the California Slavic Studies seriies. Very good in nicked dustjacket. 50.00 "The fourteen essays in thisvolume assemble some of the most significant current research on medieval Russian culture by leading specialists in the Soviet Union and Eastern and Western Europe as well as the United States. The range of topics is wide - language and literature, art and architecture, religion and folk belief. Each essay provides an in-depth analysis of a single problem or set of problems that vary in scope from urban to rural, from social to individual. In this manner the volume evokes the richness and complexity of Russian culture before Peter the Great without sacrificing thoroughness and detail. Some ofthe contributions challenge received opinion on issues with a long traditi on of scholarly inquiry; others introduce materials analyzed for the first time. All are intended to stimulate further Western scholarship in an area of Russian studies which in recent years has been investigated most actively in the Soviet Union and Eastern Europe, students of Russian culture, and, because of its comparative value, to students of medieval European culture as well." McGill-Queens University Press, Montreal & Kingston, 2009, ISBN:9780773535053
(BISHOP, Elizabeth). PICKARD, Zachariah. Elizabeth Bishop's Poetics of Description. Montreal & Kingston, London, Ithaca: McGill-Queen's University Press, (2009). First Printing. Pp. (8),[ix]-x,(2),[1]-212. 8vo, black paper covered board with silver lettering to spine. "Many readers are struck by Elizabeth bishop's use of clear, striking descriptions of the physical world, but no scholar has ever analysed how Bishop's commitment to description shapes her writing and thinking. 'Elizabeth Bisop's Poetics of Description' argues that attention to the material realm informs everything Bishop does. Seen through the lens, many familiar topics look remarkably different. Bishop's relationship to travel, epiphany, surrealism, and imagery are all transformed and a timely new Bishop emerges -- one quite different from the postmodern poet that has dominated recent scholarship. Zachariah Picard eschewsacademic jargon and concentrates on the poems themselves as well as on a n umber of key prose passages that have long been overlooked. His study combines scholarly rigor with clarity and common sense to present a moving new account of Bishop's work that will appeal to educated readers within and without the academy." - from the dustjacket.
