3 ABENDSCHÖN, Simone Growing into Politics : Contexts and Timing of Political Socialisation
ECPR Press / European Consortium for Political Research Press, 2013, ISBN:1907301429
ABENDSCHÖN, Simone. Growing into Politics : Contexts and Timing of Political Socialisation. (Colchester, UK) : ECPR Press , (2013). Pp (4),[v]-x,(2),[1]- 280. 8vo, blue hardcovers. In the ECPR Studies in European Political Science series. "This book presents up-to-date empirical research on crucial questions of political socialisation. It suggests new approaches and answers to a classic, but still valid question of political socialisation research: 'Who learns what from whom, under what circumstances, and with what effects?' (Greenstein 1965: 13). The volume maintains that political socialisation is no universal or independent phenomenon, but one significantly shapedby the surrounding parameters of the society in which it is embedded. Ther efore, deficits in political socialisation research have become especially clear in light of political and societal changes over recent decades. The book contributes to two important discussions in the study of political socialisation: first, the question of the (relative) importance of socialisation agents and contexts, second - inextricably interwoven with the first - the timing of political socialisation. From a European perspective, articles in the volume shed light on old problems and topics of the field, using newmethodological approaches or dealing with long-neglected perspectives such as young children's democratic learning or political socialisation.. Inclu des quantitative approaches as well as innovative and explorative case studies." from rear cover. Contents : 1. Introduction: Political Socialisation in a Changing World (by Simnne Abendschon). 2. 4 ABOUL-ENEIN, Youssef and Basil ABOUL-ENEIN. Secret War for the Middle East : The Influence of Axis and Allied Intelligence Operations during World War II. First Edition in dustjacket.
Naval Institute Press, Annapolis, Maryland, 2013, ISBN:9781612513096
ABOUL-ENEIN, Youssef and Basil ABOUL-ENEIN. The Secret War for the Middle East : The Influence of Axis and Allied Intelligence Operations during WorldWar II. Annapolis, Maryland : Naval Institute Press, (2013). First Printin g. Pp. (6),vii-xxiii,(1),1-263,(1). 8vo, red paper-covered spine with off-white patterned paper-covered boards, silver lettering to spine. Foreword byEd Mornston. "Although often overlooked in studies of World War II, the Mi ddle East was actually a key theater for the Allies. Though the threat of direct Axis invasion by Rommel's Afrika Corps never materialized beyond the Egyptian Western Desert, this did not limit the Axis from probing the Middle East and cultivating potential collaborators and sympathizers. 'The Secret War for the Middle East' explores the infusion of the political language of anti-Semitism, nationalism, fascism, and Marxism that was among the ideological by-products of Axis and Allied intervention in the Arab world. The status of the British-dominated Middle East was tailor-made for exploitation by Axis intelligence and propaganda. German and Italian intelligence efforts fueled anti-British resentments; their influence shaped the course of Arab nationalist sentiments throughout the Middle East. These actions left an indelible mark on the sociopolitical evolution of the modern states of the Middle East, and their effects continue to be felt today. A relevant parallel to the pan-Arab cause was Hitler's attempt to bring ethnic Germans into the fold of a greater German state. In theory, as the Sudeten German stood on par with the Carpathian German, so, too, according to doctrinal theory, did the Yemeni stand in union with the Syrian in the imagination of thoseespousing pan-Arabism. As historic evidence demonstrates, this very common ality proved to be a major factor in the development of relations between Arab and fascist leaders. The Arab nationalist movement amounted to little more than a shapeless, fragmented counter-position to British imperialism, imported to the Arab East via Berlin for Nazi aspirations." - from the dustjacket. 5 ABRAHAM, Richard KERENSKY, Alexander Alexander Kerensky : The First Love of the Revolution. First British Edition in dustjacket
Sidgwick & Jackson, London, 1987, ISBN:0283994762
ABRAHAM, Richard. Alexander Kerensky : The First Love of the Revolution. London : Sidgwick & Jackson, (1987). First British Edition. Pp (8),[ix]-xii,(3),[1]-503,(1), frontispiece + 32 pp plates. Index. 8vo, yellow cloth, giltlettering to black panel on spine. "In July 1917, Alexander Kerensky succe eded Prince Lvov as premier of Russia's Provisional Government, which was estabJished after the February overthrow of Czar Nicholas II. Kerenskv was himself deposed later that year by Lenin's Bolsheviks, causing him fo flee to Paris where he became an active propagandist against the Soviet regime. In 1940, he emigrated to the United States, where he lived until his death in 1970. In this innovative biography, Richard Abraham offers a comprehensive analysis of Kerensky's politics and an intimate portrait of the man and his turbulent times. Tracing the course of Kerensky's career from obscure political trials to open, conspiraionai organizations, leadership, and finally exile, Abraham demonstrates that Kerensky was the representative and charismatic leader of the rank-and-file of the Russian intelligentsia. His prominence in 1917 was therefore no accident, but the fruit of his unremitting commitment to revolution, and of efforts which almost triggered a revolution as early as 1915. The author confirms that Kerensky played a crucial rolein forestalling any rallying of the Right before the October Revolution an d reexamines the accusation that he and his Socialist Revolutionary comrades were responsible for the horrors of the civil war. Kerenskv's belief in parliamentary democracy is evident in Abraham's concise account of his fiftyyears in exile. " (from the dj). Contents : Preface. 1. Inspector Kerensky 's Career. 2. In what ways does this dependence i nfluence the conditions, forms, and outcomes of colective action in those small countries, including the occurrence of revolutions and the institutionalization of political systems? To answer these questions, Risto Alapuro focuses on the experience of Finland. He provides an insightful political, economic, and social history of the country since 1809. Then, using two key events - the first parliamentary elections with universal suffrage in 1907 andthe abortive revolution in 1917-1918 - he analyzes the unique factors that govern politics in a small, dependent country. Index. 8vo, blue cloth, gilt lettering to brown panels to spine. In The History of Human Society series. "The epic story of American society, from pre-Colonial times to the end of the Civil War is unfolded here in a swift and sweeping synthesis. John Alden has sought primarily to put the multitudinous facets of the rich and varied past, so often separately studied by others, into a clear and just perspective. He begins with a notable chapter on the American Indians, and then goes on to the English, French, and other pioneers, emphasizing the educaitonal, religious and political heritageeach brought from Europe. He presents a swift and lucid picture of the Col onial Period, usually shown as an intricate morass of sectarian bickering. He puts the American Revolution, the writing of the constitution, and the opportune Louisiana Purchase into the panorama of world history. He shows how the aristocratic federalists were ousted by a second and more democratic revolution, the Jacksonian, and makes clear the powerful social forces at work. As the pioneers moved west, the very foundations of American society were altered. And the Civil War was a crucial social as well as political turning point" (from the dj). 16 ALEXANDER, Martin S. Republic in Danger : General Maurice Gamelin and the Politics of French Defence, 1933-1940. First Edition in dustjacket, signed by author
Cambridge University Press, Cambridge, 1992, ISBN:0521372348
ALEXANDER, Martin S. The Republic in Danger : General Maurice Gamelin and the Politics of French Defence, 1933-1940. Cambridge: Cambridge University Press, (1992). First Edition. Pp (12),[xi]-xiv,1-573,(3). Index. 8vo, blue cloth, gilt lettering to spine. "This is the first full-length study in English of the career of one of France's most controversial military leaders, General Maurice Gamelin (1872-1958). Gamelin was reviled by many of his contemporaries and denigrated by historians as 'the man who lost the Battle of France'. Here Gamelin is re-appraised in the context of the unstable civil-military relations and national decline of the years 1933-40. Basing his account on hitherto inaccessible primary sources and on public and private archives. The evidence reviewed, including Gamelin's private headquarters' diary, provides the basis for a revision of the earlier hostile portraits of the general. The author argues that less attention should be paid to the campaign in France in 1940, by which time Gamelin's role was that of co-ordinator and adviser. Rather, he suggests that great credit is due to Gamelin for his success in holding together the pre-war civil-military consensus, and for re-arming France by 1939."
