6 ABENDSCHÖN, Simone Growing into Politics : Contexts and Timing of Political Socialisation
ECPR Press / European Consortium for Political Research Press, 2013, ISBN:1907301429
ABENDSCHÖN, Simone. Growing into Politics : Contexts and Timing of Political Socialisation. (Colchester, UK) : ECPR Press , (2013). Pp (4),[v]-x,(2),[1]- 280. 8vo, blue hardcovers. In the ECPR Studies in European Political Science series. "This book presents up-to-date empirical research on crucial questions of political socialisation. It suggests new approaches and answers to a classic, but still valid question of political socialisation research: 'Who learns what from whom, under what circumstances, and with what effects?' (Greenstein 1965: 13). The volume maintains that political socialisation is no universal or independent phenomenon, but one significantly shapedby the surrounding parameters of the society in which it is embedded. Ther efore, deficits in political socialisation research have become especially clear in light of political and societal changes over recent decades. The book contributes to two important discussions in the study of political socialisation: first, the question of the (relative) importance of socialisation agents and contexts, second - inextricably interwoven with the first - the timing of political socialisation. From a European perspective, articles in the volume shed light on old problems and topics of the field, using newmethodological approaches or dealing with long-neglected perspectives such as young children's democratic learning or political socialisation.. Inclu des quantitative approaches as well as innovative and explorative case studies." from rear cover. Contents : 1. Naval Institute Press, Annapolis, Maryland, 2013, ISBN:9781612513096
ABOUL-ENEIN, Youssef and Basil ABOUL-ENEIN. The Secret War for the Middle East : The Influence of Axis and Allied Intelligence Operations during WorldWar II. Annapolis, Maryland : Naval Institute Press, (2013). First Printin g. Pp. (6),vii-xxiii,(1),1-263,(1). 8vo, red paper-covered spine with off-white patterned paper-covered boards, silver lettering to spine. Foreword byEd Mornston. "Although often overlooked in studies of World War II, the Mi ddle East was actually a key theater for the Allies. Though the threat of direct Axis invasion by Rommel's Afrika Corps never materialized beyond the Egyptian Western Desert, this did not limit the Axis from probing the Middle East and cultivating potential collaborators and sympathizers. 'The Secret War for the Middle East' explores the infusion of the political language of anti-Semitism, nationalism, fascism, and Marxism that was among the ideological by-products of Axis and Allied intervention in the Arab world. The status of the British-dominated Middle East was tailor-made for exploitation by Axis intelligence and propaganda. German and Italian intelligence efforts fueled anti-British resentments; their influence shaped the course of Arab nationalist sentiments throughout the Middle East. These actions left an indelible mark on the sociopolitical evolution of the modern states of the Middle East, and their effects continue to be felt today. A relevant parallel to the pan-Arab cause was Hitler's attempt to bring ethnic Germans into the fold of a greater German state. In theory, as the Sudeten German stood on par with the Carpathian German, so, too, according to doctrinal theory, did the Yemeni stand in union with the Syrian in the imagination of thoseespousing pan-Arabism. As historic evidence demonstrates, this very common ality proved to be a major factor in the development of relations between Arab and fascist leaders. The Arab nationalist movement amounted to little more than a shapeless, fragmented counter-position to British imperialism, imported to the Arab East via Berlin for Nazi aspirations." - from the dustjacket. Contents: 1. Introduction; 2. The Palestine Question; 3. Hashemite Iraq; 4. Vichy French Syria: Operation Exporter; 5. Iran: Operation Countenance; 6. Turkey: Balancing Neutrality; 7. Axis Efforts in the Arabian Peninsula; 8. Afghanistan and the Third Reich: Fomenting Rebellions; 9. Egypt's Internal Struggle: To Declare War or Not?; 10. Conclusion. "That the campaigns in Palestine deserve a much higher position among the decisive battles of the world is a view which is intelligible and excusable, the more so as military events which shaped or reshaped the history of the 'least of all lands' naturally make a special appeal to biblical students. Nor canone deny that the triumph of Judaism through the victories of the Maccabee s was part of the great Oriental reaction against Hellenism, and that it preserved the Old Testament and thus formed the prelude to Christianity." - from the preface. ADAMS, Ansel, and John MUIR. Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. Photographs byAnsel Adams. Sel;ections from the Works of John Muir. Edited by Charlotte E. Mauk. Boston : Houghton Mifflin Company, 1948. First Edition. Pp (12),ix-xix,(5),3-132,(2),+ 64 leaves of black-and-white plates. Large 8vo, tan cloth, brown lettering to front board and spine. "This book is an interpretation, in text and photographs, of Yosemite Valley and the Sierra Nevada range of mountains. the text is from the works of John Muir, a naturalist whosewriting reveals the excitement and beauty and strength in a world untouche d by man. the photographs were created by Ansel Adams, whose camera discovers that which lies before us all - and magically, what our eyes may fail tocommunicate to our hearts. this combination of word and image creates a st atement of grater intensity than either word or image alone. Sixty-four photographs are beautifully reproduced in this big book. Mr. Adams has chosen phrases from Muir which, facing the photographs, are perfect captions. These photographs are the work of several years, and almost all are here reproduced for the first time. The text has been taken from Mountains of California, The Yosemite, My First Summer in the Sierra, and others of Muir's best-known book. the selections have been wove into a unified description of thecountry, in all seasons and in all mods, by Miss Charlotte Mauk of Berkele y, California. The lines which delimit Yosemite on a map have no meaning onthe high watershed ridges which are the geographic boundaries of the Park. In actuality, the spirit of Yosemite depends on an environment which exten ds to the Pacific and to the clear bleak loneliness of the deserts beyond the Sierra crest. Begin with the rolling hills of the Coast Range and the wide expanse of the Central Valley. Climb, as Muir did when he was shepherding his flocks, the rugged foothills of the Sierra. See Yosemite in its high-mountain matrix; cross the Sierra to the wild and barren beauty of Mono; look at Tahoe on the north, the great ranges south of Yosemite, and the tremendous tossing wall of the east face of the Sierra. Behold mountains and quiet pools, twigs, clouds, canyons, stones - great vistas and intimate realities." (from the dj). Contents : Introduction. A biography of John Muir. Aperture, New York, 1994, ISBN:0893815977
ADAMS, Robert. Why People Photograph : Selected Essays and Reviews. (New York): Aperture, (1994). First Printing. Pp. (14),13-186,(4). Illustrated in black and white. 8vo, white cloth spine with white paper covered boards, silver lettering to spine. "'Why People Photograph' is a book by a professional photographer about the relationship of art and life. In 1981 Robert Adams published a volume of essay entitled 'Beauty in Photography', in which hesuggested that art is too important to confuse with interior decoration or an investment opportunity. Its real use, he contended, is to affirm meanin g and thus 'to keep intact an affection for life'. 'Why People Photograph' gathers a selection of Adams's writing since then. His subjects vary, but again he questions accepted prejudice, this time not only the view that art is trivial but that artists are separate. He demonstrates that many understand themselves to be bound to the world by complex and important obligations. Adams's writing is free of academic jargon. Readers will also appreciatehis attention to common experience (he talks about trying to earn an incom e), his employment of the unorthodox (one essay concerns dogs and photography), and above all his conviction that art matters." - from the dustjacket.Very good in unclipped dustjacket. 35.00

16 ADKINS, Roy, and Lesley ADKINS. ADKINS, Lesley NELSON, Horatio War for All the Oceans : From Nelson at the Nile to Napoleon at Waterloo. in dj.
Viking, New York, 2007, ISBN:9780670038660
ADKINS, Roy, and Lesley ADKINS. The War for All the Oceans : From Nelson atthe Nile to Napoleon at Waterloo. (New York) : Viking, (2007). First Print ing. Pp [i]-xxvi,[1]-534,+ 16 pp plates. Maps. Index. 8vo, blue paper covered boards, gilt lettering to spine. "From its very first page, The War for All the Oceans is an adventure story—a superb account of the naval war thatlasted from Napoleon's seizure of power in 1798 to the War of 1811 with th e United States. Most naval histories stop at Nelson's death at the Battle of Trafalgar in 1805.. Yet the Royal Navy took on almost every other nationthat had a rival fleet: the French, Spanish, Dutch, Danes, Russians, Turks and Americans. Shipping routes all over the world were guarded to ensure that trade with Britain was not interrupted, and, as Napoleon lost his empire, Britain formed solid, imperial foundations—all because the British navygained control of the oceans. Roy and Lesley Adkins bring this naval war t o life, writing about its heroes, ship maneuvers and shipboard life with equal relish. They paint a brilliant picture of the large fleet actions of the war, such as the battles of the Nile and Copenhagen; duels between pairs of ships, such as the HMS Shannon and USS Chesapeake; and combined naval and army operations like the disastrous Walcheren expedition. They provide aringside seat to the earliest attacks with torpedoes and rockets and a fr esh look at our own country in a brilliant rendering of the War of 1811, fought in our nation's infancy. As in Nelson's Trafalgar, the Adkinses delight in the details, drawing vivid portraits of the sailors as well as the press-gangs, prostitutes and spies who populated this epic war." - from the dj. 19 AGUIRRE, Robert W. International Straits of the World, Vol.15 Panama Canal.. Volume 15 in the International Straits of the World series. First Edition
Martinus Nijhoff, Leiden / Boston, 2010, ISBN:9004177280
AGUIRRE, Robert W. The Panama Canal. Leiden / Boston : Martinus Nijhoff Publishers, 2010. First Edition. Pp. (4),[v]-xii,(2),[1]-293,(5). Maps, tables, illustrations in text. 8vo, green paper-covered boards, light green lettering to front & spine. Volume 15 in the International Straits of the World series. "The relationship between straits and interoceanic canals has always been ambiguous. Unlike straits, interoceanic canals are neither natural nor subject to a universal legal regime like the Law of the Sea. However, straits and interoceanic canals share comparable historical experiences due to their geographic similarities. Suspending interest in a purely legal analysis, The Panama Canal lets logic yield to experience and considers the Panama Canal as an 'artificial strait'. The volume recasts the dynamic events that have changed the Panama Canal in the context of three interactive elements: environments, flows, and territoriality. Cleverly deciphering from history how changes in one element led to changes in another, The Panama Canal suggests a considerably new perspective for viewing the canal's past and future." - from rear cover.
