103 CATTANEO, Carlo LACAITA, Carlo SABETTI, Filippo SALVEMINI, Gaetano Civilization and Democracy : The Salvernini Anthology of Cattaneo's Writings. In the Lorenzo Da Ponte Italian Library series. First Edition in dustjacket
University of Toronto Press, Toronto, Buffalo, London, 2006, ISBN:9780802092052
CATTANEO, Carlo. Civilization and Democracy : The Salvernini Anthology of Cattaneo's Writings. Edited and introduced by Carlo G. Lacaita and Filippo Sabetti. Translated by David Gibbons. Toronto, Buffalo, London: University of Toronto Press, (2006). First Edition. Pp. (4),[v]-xiii,(3),3-283,(7). 8vo, black cloth with gilt lettering to spine. In the Lorenzo Da Ponte ItalianLibrary series. General editors: Luigi Ballerini and Massimo Ciavolella. " Nineteenth-century Italy is a vast, unexplored territory in the history of modern political thought and liberal democratic theory. Apart from Mazzini,Pareto, and Mosca, the authors of this period are little read, even though their central concerns - the riddle of human liberation, progress, and lib erty - are as important today as ever. This volume presents a selection of the writings of Carlo Cattaneo (1801-1869), one of the period's most important thinkers, as selected by an equally important personage of a subsequenttime, the anti-Fascist intellectual Gaetano Salvemini. Cattaneo had a prof ound sense of the historical contingencies underlying the quest both to understand human affairs and to realize a self-governing society. Cattaneo's ideas and framework of analysis - like those of John Stuart Mill and Alexis de Tocqueville - were not shaped by a narrow intra-academic agenda but by the great social, economic, and political transformations of his time. The issues he addressed included problems of revolution, reform, and change in the passage to modernity, which extended far beyond the confines of nineteenth-century Italy. The selection of original pieces presented in this translation is preceded by an introduction by the editors, Carlo G. Lacaita and Filippo Sabetti, which guides the reader through Cattaneo's thinking and puts it in a comparative context. While bringing these writings to a broader audience, this anthology shows not only the range of Cattaneo's interests, but allso the astuteness and sensitivity he brought to his subjects." - fromthe dj. Contents: 1. Lacaita and Sabetti's introduction "Carlo Cattaneo an d Varieties of Liberalism"; 2. Gaetano Salvelmini's "Cattaneo's Life and Work". Includes a selection of Cattaneo's writings, arranged in the followingfields: International Affairs, Public Economy, Education and Militia, Loca l Autonomy, The Social Question, Literature, Aspects of World History, The Risorgimento, and Human Sciences. 110 CINEL, Dino National Integration of Italian Return Migration, 1870-1929. First Editionin dustjacket
Cambridge University Press, Cambridge, 1991, ISBN:0521400589
CINEL, Dino. The National Integration of Italian Return Migration, 1870-1929. Cambridge, &c : Cambridge University Press, (1991). First Edition. Pp. (6),v-vi,1-280. 8vo, green cloth with gilt lettering to spine. In the Interdisciplinary Perspectives on Modern History series. "This book examines return migration to Italy from the United States from 1870 to 1929. A large number of Italians did not intend to settle permanently in the United States. Rather, they emigrated temporarily to the United States to make money in order to buy land in Italy. The book documents the flow back to Italy of individuals and remittances and discusses the strategies used by returnees in investing American savings. The Italian government and Italian society in general took a great deal of interest in return migration. Initially, Italy opposed mass emigration. In time, the government promoted emigration and return migration as the best way of creating savings, which would in turn promote the modernization of the Italian economy, especially in the south. Eventually, return migration and remittances were regarded by many Italians as the best way to solve the thorny southern question (la questione meridionale). Unfortunately, return migration and remittances, while having a positive impact on the southern economy, failed to fulfill both individual and social expectations. Many returnees were unable to resettle comfortably in Italy by purchasing land properties with American savings. And these disillusioned returnees crossed the Atlantic again never to return to Italy. Moreover, the south did not take off economically, as many had predicted it would at the turn of the century. Structural and social problems ot a great magnitude prevented remittances from having a profound and lasting impact in thesouth." - from the dj. Pp [i]-v,(1),1-260,(2). 8vo, illustrated card covers, blue spine. "It's 1939, and war has been declared. Excitement to fight Hitler has reached a fever pitch, even in the remote Ottawa Valley parish where Ralph Russell,a newly ordained Anglican priest, has recently begun serving God. However, like many of his flock, Ralph joins the local regiment and is among the fi rst Canadian troops to be shipped overseas. But the initial excitement of fighting the good fight is eventually dulled by months, then years, of training. Maintaining morale becomes one of Padre Russell's biggest challenges, a burden eased when he meets the Vicar of Bewdleigh and his daughter Erin, who invite him to make St. Tristan's the regiment's spiritual home. The vicar is not a well man, and Ralph soon earns Erin's gratitude (and dare he hope affection?), when he offers to assist the older priest. Then, in 1943, the lads from the Valley are finally called to serve—as part of the First Canadian Division's slow, bloody march across Sicily and up Italy to Ortona. Nothing could have prepared either Ralph or his men for this. Fighting the foe within becomes as much of a contest as fighting the foe without, and Ralph soon discovers that he is as much a follower in the quest for God's understanding, as he is a leader." - from the back cover.
