Jacket illustration from a drawing by Rex Woods, Canadian artist and illustrator (b. July 21, 1903, Gainsborough, Lincolnshire – d. November 18, 1987, Toronto).

"In Jancis, Mr. Barnard turns from the field of the short story to that of the novel. The book deals witn the experiences of a company of friends who undertake to holiday together on the Lower St. Lawrence. How their lives are affected by disturbing contacts with soil and sea and, especially, with the girl Jancis, gives scope for Mr. Barnard not only to render authentically a part of his own province, but, by overtones and implications, to push back the fringes of Time and the boundaries of human experience.

Readers who demand a good story will find it here; those who ask for more than a mere story will find in Jancis something of mental and spiritual adventure." from the jacket.

One leaf (pp.235-6) roughly opened resulting in marginal loss, not affecting text, else very good in rubbed, nicked dustjacket. 40.00

108 BASKERVILLE, Peter and Eric W. SAGER SAGER, Eric W. Unwilling Idlers : The Urban Unemployed and Their Families in Late Victorian Canada. pbk.
University of Toronto Press, Toronto, 1998, ISBN:0802081444
BASKERVILLE, Peter and Eric W. SAGER. Unwilling Idlers : The Urban Unemployed and Their Families in Late Victorian Canada . Toronto: University of Toronto Press, (1998). Pp. (8),[ix]-xiv,(6) of plates,[1]-294. 8vo, illustrated brown card covers with black spine. "Unemployment has a long history in Canada. Joblessness was part of working-class experience long before the Depression of the 1930s. Until the late nineteenth century it lacked official recognition and even a name of its own. Yet the problem was pervasive. Unemployment helps to explain inequalities, both within the working class and between classes. It makes sense of the mobility of workers: the migration ofyoung people in Quebec to towns and cities and to the United States, the o ut-migration from the Maritime Provinces, and the movement of thousands every year from city to hinterland and back again. Unemployment deepend the division of labour within households and thereby exacerbated gender distinctions. It was part of the recurring conflict between workers and employers. It helps to explain the opposition to immigration and the virulent hostilitytowards certain ethnic and racial groups that emerged in the late nineteen th century. Unemployment can help us to understand the growth of urban charities and of social-reform movements in the cities. By the 1880s and 1890s unemployment was no longer latent; it had become a pervasive condition of class relations in urban Canada." - from the rear cover. With much Nova Scotia-related material throughout. Very good. 15.00

Large 8vo, art-illustrated blackcard covers with white lettering to front cover and spine, French flaps. E d Pien, b. 1958, Taipei, Taiwan, an artist and printmaker, who currently works as a professor in the architecture faculty at the University of Toronto. "Presented at the MAJ from February 10 to April 27, 2008, 'Haven of Delight', curated by Eve-Lyne Beaudry, Curator of Contemporary Art, reveals the use that Ed Pien makes of drawing in all its forms. Whether executed in inkor with an X-Acto knife, it continues to be the basis of his whole oeuvre, which is at once sensual, expressive and troubling. 'Haven of Delight' als o presents, for the first time in Canada, the installation Haven, created by Pien in 2007 for the Bellevue Arts Museum in the United States. This impressive work consists of five interlocked structures of cut paper forming a labyrinth bounded by jagged hedges, through which visitors are invited to walk. Inside the labyrinth, sound and video elements intermingle with the cut-paper construction." - from the foreword. Contents: Foreword by Gaëtane Verna; 1.
