Catalog of an exhibition held at the Bruce Peel Special Collections Library, University of Alberta, October 2007-January 2008. "To my great delight this exhibition catalogue on the Golden Cockerel Press has afforded me the opportunity to write about one of the great British private presses and its contribution to the fine press movement. While the sixty books in this catalogue represent barely a quarter of Golden Cockerels total output I have taken care to make a selection that shows how the Press expressed its individuality and continued a tradition of fine book production against the odds. In using the words "endurance" and "distinction" in the title, I have endeavoured to capturethe resilience of the Press and the determination of its various owners to achieve an ideal. A great proportion of Cockerels were illustrated works, and many feature nude engravings, which were a further expression of the owners' ideas about bookmaking. The owners were not afraid to exercise their own tastes in the selection of designs and materials, and the enduring erotic theme increased the popularity of Cockerels with collectors. The Press made a significant contribution to the fine press movement with its pioneering designs, and, despite some faults, the books are handsome and distinctive. I invite you, dear reader, to consider the books and make your own determination on whether Golden Cockerel deserves its place in the pantheon of fine bookmakers. I promise a worthwhile experience." (from the Preface). Nick to top spine, else very good. Signed with inscription by the author. 40.00
