126 BOWEN, Gail. Brutal Heart : A Joanne Kilbourn Mystery. First Edition in dustjacket.
McClelland and Stewart, Toronto, 2008, ISBN:9780771016875
BOWEN, Gail. The Brutal Heart : A Joanne Kilbourn Mystery. (Toronto, Ontario) : McClelland & Stewart, (2008). First Printing. Pp. (6),1-325,(5). 8vo, black paper-covered boards with metallic blue lettering to spine. Gail Dianne Bowen, née Bartholomew (b. September 22, 1942, Toronto). "It's a perfectMay day in Regina, and the forsythia in Joanne Kilbourn's garden is in daz zling bloom. Friends and neighbours have gathered there to celebrate the fiftieth birthday of Joanne's new husband, Zack Shreve, among them Ginny Monaghan, the Conservative MP for their riding, whose presence causes quite a stir. A general election is just weeks away, and she is here to charm everyone into ignoring rumours about her recent sexual escapades. Ginny knows herpolitical future is in the balance, and she needs all the help she can get . By the end of the party, the sadness Zack's been feeling ever since his friend Ned Osler took his own life a few weeks earlier has lifted. But then his cellphone rings, and it's not someone calling to wish him happy birthday. It's the police with the news that a local call girl has been found murdered, a call girl with an impressive client list. Two names on it stand out: Ned Osler and Zack Shreve. Shaken by Zack's revelation that before he mether he regularly saw this woman, Joanne throws herself into her work -- a project on women and politics that Monaghan has agreed to co-operate with. But she's haunted by the prostitute's death and decides to find out why thedead woman had started to threaten her clients with blackmail, an investig ation that risks not just her marriage but her life. In 'The Brutal Heart',Bowen expertly mixes the ingredients of marriage, family, politics -- and murder -- into a constantly surprising and compulsively readable story. As Zack tells Joanne, it's the loose ends of our lives that hang us." - from the dustjacket. Very good in unclipped dustjacket. 18.00

127 BOWERING, George Allophanes. First Printing.
Coach House Press, Toronto, 1976,
BOWERING, George. Allophanes. Toronto: The Coach House Press, (1976). FirstPrinting. Pp. (56). Unpaginted. Tall 8vo, printed blue paper wrappers, fre nch flaps, dark blue lettering to front and spine, triangular porthole cut to front cover. "This poem was written from September to December in 1974, & from all appearances seems to bridge a gap between the politics of 'At War with the U.S.' & the cultural narrative of 'A Short Sad Book'. It began with a sentence heard in the author's head: The snowball appears in Hell every morning at seven. It was said in the voice of Jack Spicer. The author knew something was up, & went deliberately to hear some more voices as best he could, & hurried to write down what they were saying. Astute readers willrecognize some of them. Allo means all. Phanes means appearances. The poem tries not to get one without the other. The scientific usage of the term a ttends the shifting colours of mineral formations, such as stalactites, lights in a cave. The word could also be translated as those things which are other than what they at first appear to be, all taken together." - from thefront flap. Small sticker ghost to front cover, name inked to flyleaf, fou r characters inked to rear flap, else very good. Due to its small size, shipping costs should be cheaper than quoted. 20.00

"In the late 1920s, Canada's economy was sliding into depression. Life savings were evaporating, unemployment was rising, and exports were falling. On the strength of a promise to 'blast' Canada's way into world markets -- and thus stop the economy's downward spiral -- Richard Bedford Bennett defeated Mackenzie King at the polls on July 28, 1930, and assumed the leadership of the country. Over the next five years, however, Bennett's name became synonymous with the worst of the Depression -- from Bennett buggies, to Bennett coffee, to Bennett boroughs. Today, he is widely viewed as a difficult man, an ineffectual leader, and an opportunistic politician who betrayed his conservative beliefs in an attempt to curry popularity.

In Bennett: The Rebel Who Challenged and Changed a Nation, John Boyko offers not only the first major biography of the man, but a fresh perspective on the old scholarship. Boyko looks at the prime minister's sometimes controversial and often misunderstood policies through a wider lens, one that shows not a politician angling for votes, but rather a man following through on a life-long dedication to a greater role for government in society and the economy." - from the dustjacket.
