Yale University Press, New Haven, 1962,
de MADARIAGA, Isabel. Britain, Russia, and the Armed Neutrality of 1780 : Sir James Harris's Mission to St. Petersburg during the American Revolution. With a Foreword by Samuel Flagg Bemis. New Haven : Yale University Press, 1962. First Edition. Pp (6),vii-xiv,(4),3-496,+ 4 pp plates. 8vo, blue cloth, gilt lettering to spine. Isabel de Madariaga (b. August 27, 1919, Glasgow, Scotland - d. June 16, 2014, London) "Within the framework of an accountof the mission of Sir James Harris to Russia in the years 1777-1783, Isabe l de Madariaga has written a detailed and penetrating history of the European aspects of the diplomacy of the American Revolution. At the heart of thenarrative lie three basic themes: the efforts of Britain to negotiate an a lliance with Russia against France, the formulation of Catherine II's policy of armed neutrality and the impact of this policy o Britain's efforts to hold on to the American colonies. The author's interpretation is broadly conceived, taking into consideration not only the personalities and interestsof the principal actors, Britain and Russia, but also of France, Austria, Prussia, the Dutch, and the Scandinavian states. With objectivity and insight Miss de Madariaga shows how the many conflicting interests of the various states involved interacted to produce the balance of forces in Europe which gave the American colonies the opportunity to gain their independence." 128 DE MAISTRE, Xavier. Expédition Nocturne autour de ma Chambre. Édition présentéen par Michel Covin, illustrations de G. Staal.
Le Castor Astral, 1990, ISBN:2859201718
DE MAISTRE, Xavier. Expédition Nocturne autour de ma Chambre. Édition présentéen par Michel Covin, illustrations de G. Staal. Le Castor Astral,(1990). Pp [1]-102,(2). Illustrated. 8vo, illustrated cream card covers, F rench flaps. "Xavier de Maistre (1763-1852) of Savoy (at the time, a regionof the Kingdom of Sardinia), lived largely as a military man, but is known as a French writer. [...] His Voyage autour de ma chambre (1794), a parody set in the tradition of the grand travel narrative, is an autobiographical account of how a young official, imprisoned in his room for six weeks, des cribes the customs, furniture, engravings, etc, as if it were a voyage to astrange land. He praises this voyage because it does not cost anything, fo r this reason it is strongly recommended to the poor, the infirm, and the lazy. His room is a long square, and the perimeter is thirty-six paces. " When I travel through my room," he writes, "I rarely follow a straight line: I go from the table towards a picture hanging in a corner; from there, I set out obliquely towards the door; but even though, when I begin, it really is my intention to go there, if I happen to meet my armchair en route, I don’t think twice about it, and settle down in it without further ado." Later, proceeding North, he encounters his bed, and in this way he lightheartedly continues his "Voyage". This work is remarkable for its play with the reader's imagination, along the lines of Laurence Sterne, whom Xavier admired.Xavier did not think much of Voyage, but his brother Joseph had it publish ed." - from wikipedia. St. Paul : Alvord Memorial Commission, (1951). First Edition. Pp (4),v-xxv,(5),3-395,(1),+ 12 plates. Double-page Map.8vo, red cloth, gilt lettering to spine. "General Regis de Trobriand was a man of many talents. When he came to take over the command of Fort Stevenson on the UpperMissouri in 1867, he had already a varied and distinguished record. In his native France, he wrote a novel, Les Gentilshommes de l' Ouest. In America , where he came in 1841, he edited a Frenrh literary quarterly, contributedarticles and reviews to New York papers, and made pencil sketches of scene s in the United States that caught his fancy. His career changed abruptly when die Civil War broke out. Abandoning his literary work, he took command of a regiment of volunteers to fight "for a cause that had immortalized Lafayette " After the war, he returned briefly to literature, writing a history of the civil conflict for the people of France. While he was still in France working on his manuscript, De Trobriand was appointed colonel in the regular army of the United States. He was assigned to a district in the military department of Dakota, the first of a series of commands that were to take him into Dakota, Montana, Wyoming, Utah, and Louisiana. At Fort Stevenson, the headquarters for the district, he kept his journal, Military Life inDakota. With meticulous care he described the people he met - Indians, tra ders, halt-breeds, miners, soldiers, couriers, steamboat captains, and adventurers. He listened to the tales they spun, talked with them, watched them, then told their stories with great literary skill mand warmth of human understanding. He wrote of the birds, the beaver, the buffalo and plants—of the traffic on the Missouri River—of the wagon trains on their dusty trek across the plains—of the loneliness of men on military duty far from their families—of the summer heat -- of the look of the countrysde mantled with deep winter snows. And he made good use o£ his training is an artist. Everywhere he saw subjects for pictures. The badlands, the plains, the Indians, theforts, all commanded his attention. Twelve of these sketches made in his l ong career in the West are reproduced for the first time in Military Life in Dakota." (from the dj).
