121 CANTWELL, Robert When We Were Good : The Folk Revival. First Edition nin dustjacket
Harvard University Press, Cambridge, Massachusetts / London, England, 1996, ISBN:0674961328
CANTWELL, Robert. When We Were Good : The Folk Revival. Cambridge, Massachusetts / London, England : Harvard University Press, 1996. First Edition. Pp(6),[vii]-viii,(4),[1]-412,(8). Illustrated. Index. 8vo, red cloth spine, tan paper covered boards, black lettering to spine. "When We Were Good traces the many and varied cultural influences on the folk revival of the sixties: early nineteenth-century blackface minstrelsy; the Jewish entertainmentand political cultures of New York in the 1930s; the Almanac singers and t he wartime crises of the 1940s; the watershed record album Folkways Anthology of American Folk Music; and finally the cold-war reactionism of the 1950s that drove the folksong movement, just as Pete Seeger and the Weavers were putting "On Top of Old Smokey" and "Goodnight, Irene" on the Hit Parade, into a children's underground of schools, summer camps, and colleges, planting the seeds of the folk revival to come. The book is not so much a history as a study of the cultural process itself, what the author calls the dreamwork of history. Cantwell shows how a body of music once enlisted on behalf of the labor movement antifascism, New Deal recovery efforts, and many other progressive causes of the 1930s was refashioned as an instrument of self-discovery, even as it found new agenda and styles in the peace, civil rights, and beat movements. At Washington Square and the Newport Folk Festival, on college campuses and in concert halls across the country, the folk revival gave voice to the generational tidal wave of postwar youth, going backto the basics and trying to be very, very good. In this capacious analysis of the ideologies, traditions, and personalities that created an extraordi nary moment in American popular culture, Cantwell explores the idea of folkat the deepest level. Taking up some of the more obdurate problems in cult ural studies - racial identity, art and politics, regional allegiances, class differences - he shows how the folk revival was a search for authentic democracy, with compelling lessons for our own time." (from the dj). Contents : Prologue: Tom Dooley : History of a Song. 1. We Are the Folk : Backgrounds of the Revival. 2. The New Minstrelsy : Jim Crow and John Henry. 3. Lesley Willis Choyce (b. March 21, 1951, Riverside, New Jersey), novelist, poet, educator and publisher.

"Novelist Lesley Choyce weaves together his real-life adventures living by the sea at Lawrencetown Beach on Nova Scotia's Eastern Shore. He writes of his love for the rugged coast and tells tales of of the ordinary and the extraordinary. Hist story involves accounts of what is like surfing in ther Canadian North Atlantic through all four seasons, including the frigid depths of winter.

There is music here in word and spirit along with the lessons learned from the old and the young. Driving Minnie's Piano is an eloquent personal memoir about the precious and fateful moments that change our lives. It is an exploration of what makes us tick and prompts us to be both heroes and fools in the daily enterprise of living.

Not one to take himself too seriously, Choyce recounts the true story of how his life was forever altered when sixteen skunks took up residence beneath his 200-year-old farmhouse. This calamitous event and the deed of evicting the skunks (with the care of a die-hard environmentalist) is an hilarious chapter that was the basis for the film, "The Skunk Whisperer," aired on three national networks. Also up for discussion are the subjects of fog, drumlins, lichen, baseball, class reunions, hair, the origin of the SurfPoets and the nature of the 'drwoned coast' that is a stone's throw from the author's back door." from rear cover.

(CIURLIONIS, Mikalojus Konstantinas). Ciurlionis : Painter and Composer : Collected Essays and Notes, 1906-1989. , Stasys Gostautas, Editor. Birute Vaicjurgis-Slezas, Associate Editor. (Vilnius and Chicago): Vaga, and (The Institute for Lithuanian Studies), 1994. Published in an edition of 2000 copies. Pp. (4),5-[560]. Illustrated in black and white. 8vo, printed white glossy paper covered boards with black signature to front and black lettering to spine. "This volume, the result of years of research, is by far the mostcomprehensive study published on Mikalojus Konstantinas Ciurlionis (1875-1 911). The scholarship on the Lithuanian painter is rather recent and practically did not exist in the English language. This book is the first its kind in scope. Its editors have painstakingly chosen thirty-one essays and five documents, many never before translated into English. The life of M.K. Ciurlionis was short, yet eventful and creative. After studying music ant [sic] painting, he toured the museums of Central Europe, and spent a summer inthe Caucasus Mountains. He died at the age of thirty-five in a mental sana torium. Ciurlionis left some four hundred paintings and sketches. A year after his death, exhibits of his work were organized in St. Petersburg and Moscow, and some of his paintings were included in exhibits held in Lodon [sic] and Paris. Ciurlionis' work defies affiliation with any particular school, art movement or painter. His extraordinarily creative intuitions indicate that in many instances he was far ahead of his time. Were his fantasies the forerunners of modern art? Of the dozen or so avant-garde movements thatwere born at the end of Ciurlionis' life, do any owe a debt to his vision? Was he a leader, a follower, or a lonely dreamer?" - from the dustjacket. Contents: Part I: Biographical and Historical Perspective: 1. Alfred Erich Senn's "Ciurlionis: A Life"; 2. Romas Viesulas's "Why the Woprld Does Not Know Ciurlionis"; 3. Mark Etkind's "The Second Life of the Artist: Dilettante or Genius"; 4. Stefan Jarocinski's "The Turning Point in European Art (1908-1914); 5. Stasys Gostautas's "Ciurlionis and Lithuania". Part II: Ciurlionis and His Russian Contemporaries: 6. Viacheslav Ivanov's "Ciurlionis andthe Synthesis of the Arts"; 7. Valerian A. Chudovsky's "The Poet of the Ve rtical Line"; 8. Mstislav Dobuzhinsky's "Ciurlionis in St. Petersburg, 1908-1909"; 9. "A Note from Nicholas Roerich"; 10. Sergei Makovsky's "In Memoriam". Part III: The Contribution of Vorobjov: 11. Nikolai Vorobjov's "The First and Second Exhibitions of Lithuanian Art in Vilnius"; 12. George M.A. Hanfmann's "Vorobjov's 'M.K. Ciurlionis'... A Book Review"; 13.
