121 CALLARD, Maurice City Called Holy. First Edition in dustjacket
Jonathan Cape, London, 1954,
CALLARD, Maurice. A City Called Holy. London : Jonathan Cape, (1954). FirstEdition. Pp (6),7-224. 8vo, brown cloth, front board and spine lettered in white. "Dendry, a detective-sergeant in the Palestine Police, was statione d in Jerusalem at the time of the troubles. Tending to feel pro-Arab and anti-Jewish, he found himself emotionally involved with a beautiful immigrantJewess. A strong physical attraction was supplemented by the compassion he felt for her. There was no doubt of her love for him, but a strong suspici on arose that she might be an agent of the Irgun terrorists. If this was true, what would happen to their passionate attachment, to him, and to her? What did happen is the theme of this uncommonly well-written first novel. The drama of a personal relationship in the tense atmosphere of troubled Palestine in 1947 (an atmosphere now perhaps for the first time brought effectively into fiction) is here made real, as well as exciting. Not onty has Maurice Callard first-hand knowledge of the times, the place, and the events, but he makes Dendry and Leah, by their doubts and hesitations, human and interesting; the events themselves compel them to be heroic. Against the forces of fear, danger and violence, love, by its own force, tries to impose its own order." (from the dj). Very good in rubbed and nicked, but unclipped, dustjacket. 35.00

125 CAMPBELL, Bruce D. Where the High Winds Blow. First Edition in dustjacket
Charles Scribner's Sons, New York, 1946,
WALKER, David. Where the High Winds Blow. New York : Charles Scribner's Sons, 1946. First Edition . Pp (8),9-512. 8vo, black cloth, gilt lettering to spine. Rhodenizer p.22. A novel by this St.Andrews, N.B. writer. "From 1934to 1937 Bruce Campbell worked for the Hudson's Bay Company in some of the loneliest outposts in the Eastern Arctic. This book is the story of his experiences and adventures during those years, his impressions of the country and of its inhabitants, the Eskimos. Mr. Campbell gives a high-spirited, graphic, amusing, frequently thrilling and entirely perceptive picture of life in the Eastern Arctcic. It was his wish, from the earliest days of his arrival among the Eskimos, "to understand these strange people," whose minds, ways of living, beliefs, were all so different from his own. His descripti on of his life among "one?of nature's mystery people" is a vivid and important contribution to the saga of the Far North. Few books have described themanners and customs of the Eskimos with so much clarity, honesty, franknes s and sympathetic understanding. But it is not only the Eskimos who give this book its interest ... it is Bruce Campbell and his companions of the Company; the "Mounties"; the officers of the steamer that came once a year to collect the furs from the trading posts. . . . Indeed, it is no wonder thatEnglish prisoners-of-war in Germany, as you will read on the back flap of this jacket, found Mr. Campbell's stories of Arctic life so fascinating. His book has the quality of intimacy that makes the reader a part of the writer's adventures among the men and women on and animals of the North, and that holds one's interest to the final word."
