Community Books, Lockeport, NS, 2002, ISBN:189649630x
PERRY, Lillian Scott, and Robert MALAY. A Church and Proud People : A Portrait of a Nova Scotian Community. Lockeport, NS: Community Books, (2002). First Printing. Pp. (4),5-239,(1). Illustrated with a couple dozen black and white photos. 8vo, illustrated pale blue card covers with dark blue lettering to front and spine. "'A Church and Proud People' originally began as a history of Wesley United Church in Barrington, Nova Scotia. The work grew, however, to reflect more than just the history of a Nova Scotian church. It is a story of a community which was one of the earliest in the Maritimes toestablish a Methodist Society. It is also a story of the people of a circu it which in its earliest days extended from Liverpool to Yarmouth. The manyvoices which characterize this story are found in diary entries, personal journals, letters, minutes of business and sessional meetings, and interviews with members of the Barrington community who were a part of the Barrington Methodist Church prior to church union in 1925. There are stories of tragedy associated with the seafaring life of this coastal community and stories of the many special days surrounding community and church events. It is a story familiar to many Nova Scotian communities which encompass the period of the Loyalist landings of 1786 to the period of post World War One." - from rear. Very good. RICHARDSON, Evelyn M. Living Island. Toronto : The Ryerson Press, (1965). First Printing. Pp (8), 1-216. 8vo, orange cloth, silver lettering to spine.Laugher p.476. Evelyn M. Richardson, née Evelyn May Fox (b. 1902, Emerald Isle, Shelburne County, Nova Scotia - d. 1976 Barrington, Nova Scotia) Canadian writier. She was raised on Cape Sable Island, and spent 35 years lighthouse keeping on Bon Portage Island near Shag Harbour. An account of the natural history of Bon Portage Island, with an emphasis on the bird life. "Her husband kept the light on the small Nova Scotian island of Bon Portage, eight miles from Cape Sable, and for twenty-six years there Evelyn Richardson's family were the only human inhabitants. The author's life, like that ofthe island's birds, animals and wild flowers, was governed by sea and seas on. With humour and sentiment, Evelyn Richardson takes the reader back and forth across her island, picking bakeapples, stalking shore birds, or thrilling to the discovery of strays or other rare types of bird life. With great charm and a tremendous feeling for the sea and its storm-ridden coast, the author writes of clouds of seagulls and many smaller migrants and wintering birds. She constantly varies her account of ten years of birdwatching with heartwarming descriptions of changiong seasons, March storms, offshore fogs and delightful summer days. This award-winning author tells, too, of the animal life, both wild and domesticated, and a variety of shrubs and flowers. When she rushes to her kitchen, binoculars in hand, each new experience becomes a treasure to be shared." - front dj flap. Very good in edgeworn dustjacket. 25.00
