145 HOOD, Graham American Silver : A History of Style, 1650-1900. First Edition in dustjacket. signed

A volume in the American Decorative Arts Series.

"From the earliest settlements until modern times, silver played an important role in American society. It served as a convenient index to social standing; yet it lacked the inflexibility of other types of property because fine silver pieces could be quickly melted down into coinage and conveniently transported and exchanged. The intrinsic worth, prestige, and easy adaptability ofsilver resulted in its becoming one of the first of the decorative arts to embody the changing tastes and attitudes of successive generations of Amer icans.

In this authoritative survey, Graham Hood, Director of Collections at Colonial Williamsburg, traces the history of style in American silver, from the lovely, simple seventeenth-oentury cups and beakers and the marvelously ornamental Baroque and Rococo pieces to the handsome, varied products of the nineteenth century. The successive trends in taste are carefully explored and documented with hundreds of exampies, and the masterpieces of eachperiod are discussed in detail, so that the reader quickly sharpens his se nsitivity to the styles and his instinct for quality. The stylistic considerations are further enriched by instructive forays into political and economic affairs and changing social conditions. In an important introductory chanter, the author discusses the origins and practice of the crait, problemsof dating, and techniques of manufacture." (from the dj).

1. Society, Silversmiths, and Their Wares.
2. The Seventeenth Century.
