"Alphonse Mucha (July 24. 1860 - July 14 1939) was one of the most important decorative artists working in Paris at the turn of the century. His distinctive and original posters and his decorative panels in Le style Mucha became almost synonymous with French Art Nouveau. He became a trusted advisor admirer and designer to the actress Sarah Bernhardt, and was also well known as the creator of familiar advertisements and as a book illustrator. Yet there was much more toMucha's achievement than this. At the height of his career as a decorative artist, he became convinced that art should serve ideas: he became a devot ed contributor to the artistic activities of the interwar Czech government, and he completed a major and controversial cycle of monumental paintings c alled the Slav Epic, as well as portraits and large symbolic paintings. This book, a first full-scale treatment of Mucha's entire oeuvre, includes discussions and reproductions of paintings, posters, decorative panels, pastels, drawings, photographs, jewelry and illustrations from throughout his career. In addition, the authors provide essays on Mucha's Paris years; his association with Sarah Bernhardt; his acquaintance with Sarah Bernhardt, his career after the turn of the century including his years in America, his work as an illustrator, The Slav Epic, his photography, and the reconstruction of his design for the magnificent Fouquet Boutique in Paris". - from the dj. Lipp and Suzanne Jackson; "Bohemia and Paris" by Jana Orlíková-Brabcová; "New Aspirations, 1900-1939" by Anna Dvorak; "Mucha's Debut in Fin de Siècle Paris" by Victor Arwas;"Mucha and Photography," by Quentin Bajac; "Would Mucha Have Made It on Ma dison Avenue?" by Jack Rennert; "Le Style Mucha and Symbolism" by Victor Arwas; "Mucha and Sarah Bernhardt" by Victor Arwas; "Mucha and Sculpture" by Victor Arwas; "Alphonse Mucha as Illustrator" by Anna Dvorak; "The Slav Epic" by Anna Dvorak; "The Fouquet Boutique" by Jean-Marie Bruson; "Jiri Mucha: Keeper of the Flame" by Geraldine Mucha. Subjects/Objects is an annual journal of cultural theory. "Our Amazonian project leaves us seeming like a gang of bandits stealing meaning from the fertile womb of capital production. Dada? Even standing with one toot over the edge of chance, the ngnt word emerges to pierce the facade of our improvisation. The gaps furrowed in history by ideology are still sealed with a (tender) kiss of law. To breed man requiresa narcissism capable of transposing subject in object: the paradoxy of the long quote eternally returning to contest its own recontextualization; the (a-)radial metaphor of self-begetting, obsessive tactics of induction with all tne value of water over blood, a zero degree." 150 ATKINSON, Rick Long Gray Line : The American Journey of West Point's Class of 1966. 1st USin dj
Houghton Mifflin, Boston, 1989,
ATKINSON, Rick. The Long Gray Line. [dustjackets adds : The American Journey of West Point's Class of 1966]. Boston : Houghton Mifflin Co., 1989. First Printing. Pp (8),[ix]-xiii,(3),[1]-592,+ 24 pp.photos. 8vo, grey paper-covered boards, blue cloth spine. "Theirs was the dream of all young men : tobecome heroes. Inspired by John E Kennedy's call to serve the nation, the West Point class of 1966 first gathered above the Hudson River on a glorious afternoon in July 1962. But as the cadets swore their oath of allegiance, they could not begin to imagine the dark journey that lay ahead. The Long Gray Line is the true story of that journey, an epic tale about an extraordinary generation of military officers and the women they loved. This spellbinding narrative brings to life a rich cast of characters, including Douglas MacArthur, William Westmoreland, and a score of other memorable figures. Yet the story is told primarily through the lives of three classmates. JackWheeler, whose intelligence is surpassed only by his idealism, comes from a long line of soldiers, but gradually he discovers that he lacks any real appetite for the bloody art of war. Brash and impetuous Tom Carhart aspiresto wear a general's stars, yet he is haunted by bad luck and his stubborn refusal to compromise his principles. George Crocker, born to lead troops through the dark of night, becomes ever more proficient as a warrior, and his story is the story of the Army over the past quarter century. Rick Atkinson tracks the men of '66 through their high-spirited cadet years and into the fires of Vietnam, where dozens of them died and hundreds more grew disillusioned. During the hard peace that followed, they resigned from the Army in record numbers, only to find that civilian life offered no easy answers either. West Point - an institution of mythic proportions - remained a powerful influence in their lives, even as the academy itself weathered a period of profound change. The tragic war, a shameful cneating scanda, the divisive questioning of the ideals upon which the academy had stood for nearly two centuries — all shook West Point to its foundation, forcing soldiers andciivilians alike to reconsider the. role of the military in a democratic s ociety. Brilliantly conceived and eloquently written, The Long Gray Line tells a deeply affecting story that spans twenty-five turbulent years. The West Point class of 1966 straddled a fault line in American history, and thismasterly book speaks for a generation about innocence, patriotism, and the price we pay for our dreams." - from the dj.
