"During the High Middle Ages it becmae the practice to ornament Bible manuscriupts with 'historiated' initials, that is, to place figural scenes within the initial letters of each bookof the Bible. [This book] is an original study of this imagery in the Bibl es produced in England and France in the twelfth and thirteenth centuries. The illustrations for the fourteen Pauline letters form a considerable portion of the entire body of imagery in a given Bible, and because the scholars of the High Middle Ages took a special interest in Paul's letters, the study of their iconography can provide unexpected, at times deligthful, insight into medieval ways of thinking about the Bible." - from the dj.
