147 FIERRO BLANCO, Antonio de NORDHOFF, Walter Journey of 'The Flame'. British edition. no dustjacket
G. Bell and Sons, Ltd., London, 1933,
FIERRO BLANCO, Antonio de. The Journey of 'The Flame.' London : G. Bell andSons, Ltd., 1933. Pp (8),ix-xxiii,(1),1-327,(1). Endpaper Maps. 8vo, orang e cloth, black lettering to spine. Antonio de Fierro Blanco was a pseudonymof Walter Nordhoff (1855—1937), who had a mining engineering degree from Y ale, and worked as a European correspondent for the New York Herald before moving west to manage fifty thousand acres of his father’s land in Baja California, the area that inspired The Journey of the Flame. "The Journey of 'The Flame' is the story told by Don Juan Obrigon, feudal lord of Old Mexico, on his hundredth birthday to his assembled guests. He tells how, as a boyof twelve, he joined the train of the Spanish Inspector-General, Don Firmi n Sanhudo, in his perilous tour of the provinces from tne southern tip of Lower California to San Francisco. Spain then, in 1810, had a precarious hold on her Colonies, and it was the business of Sanhudo to inquire into conditions, and to inspect the Misssiosns. The journey was one long adventure. Thruugn almost impossible deserts, over precipitous mountains, among hostileand bloodthirsty tribes, through valleys of flowers, thye train of mules, soldiers, servants, and camp-followers made its slow way. The scenes ana cnaracters in the cavalcade are exciting in themselves, but the story is spiced with numerous anecdotes and reflections on life, given with considerablewit and point by the old man. The author is steeped in knowledge of the co untry and period of which he writes, and of the folklore, legends, tradition and superstitions of the Indians. He has contrived a gorgeously coloured, thrilling, and unusual story, and a stirring description of savage feudal life in Spanish America—a land where human life was not of great value (except possibly to the owner), and wnere every man carried two knives." FONG, William. Sir William C. Macdonald : A Biography. Montreal & Kingston : Published for The Macdonald-Stewart Foundation by McGill-Queen's University Press, (2007). First Edition. Pp [i]-xx,[1]-316. Illustrated. Index. 8vo, black cloth, gilt lettering to spine. “Born into a prominent Scottish family on Prince Edward Island, Macdonald rejected his Catholic upbringing andleft home when he was eighteen. After three years in Boston as a bookkeepe r he headed to Montreal and began to work as a commission agent. By 1868 Macdonald had become the leading manufacturer of chewing tobacco in Canada, and by 1885 he may have been the richest person in the country. Sir William Macdonald (1831-1917) is the father of the Canadian tobacco industry and one of the” country's foremost educational philanthropists. His contributionsto McGill University transformed it into one of the world's foremost resea rch and teaching institutions. William Fong's biography places Macdonald's life in its historical context, painting a vivid portrait of Victorian Canada. Macdonald turned to philanthropy when he was in his fifties; his endowments to institutions from Prince Edward Island to British Columbia made professionalism and practical education central to Canadian life. Fong describes in particular how McGill University evolved, largely through Macdonald'sfinancial contributions, from an impoverished institution into an intellec tual powerhouse. Most famously, he financed the research that led to ErnestRutherford's Nobel Prize and to the start of the atomic age. "Sir William C. Macdonald" offers the first detailed look at the development of engineering, physics, and law at McGill.” - from the dj. Very good in dustjacket. 25.00

FOX, Robert, and George WEISZ (eds.). The Organization of Science and Technology in France 1808-1914. Cambridge [et al] : Cambridge University Press /Paris : Editons de la Maison des Sciences de l'Homme, (1980). Pp (4),[v]-x ,1-355,(3). Index. 8vo, olive green cloth, silver lettering to spne. "Description Contents Resources Courses About the Authors The papers in this volume represent the first attempt at a coherent analysis of the institutional structure of French science and technology in the nineteenth century. They treat both research and education and cover the main developments in the period from the establishment of the Napoleonic University in 1808 to the outbreak of the First World War. The papers reflect the intense interest in the social history of French science since the Revolution and convey a vivid impression of different modes of thought in a particularly active field of research. The contributions stress and develop more clearly than in any previous study, the theme of structural change in a complex interlocking network of institutions. Far from being an unresponsive monolith, France's system of scientific research and education proved capable of significant modification and expansion, especially in the later nineteenth century. To an extent that has not been fully recognised by historians, the French did respond to the changing demands of an industrialising economy and to the intellectual, economic and political challenge of the new Germany - a point that needs to be taken into account in discussions of the supposed decline of French science in the nineteenth century..."
