In the Navies of the Second World War series. "While thefirst volume of this series was devoted to the regular warships of the Ger man Navy, this second volume lists some of the auxiliary units without which no fleet could operate. To have listed them all would have needed considerable space: consequently, only a selection has been made amongst the more interesting conversions, and from those naval vessels which were captured by the German Navy and put to use. Although the latter formed a considerableaddition to the German fleet, the acquisition was in the nature of a mixed blessing with regard to maintenance." from the dj. Volume 2 only. LENTON, H.T. British Escort Ships . New York: Arco, 1974. Pp. 1-64. Illustrated. Large 8vo, illustrated black card covers. A volume in the World War II Fact Files series. "The Battle of the Atlantic lasted for five years, andduring that time a growing number of anti-submarine escorts were brought i nto service to protect shipping. Vast quantities of war material and entireexpeditionary forces had to go by sea from the United States to Europe, an d if Admiral Dönitz' U-Boats could have severed this lifeline Nazi Germany could have dictated its own peace terms. The best known escorts were the 'Flower' class corvettes, which were based on a whale-catcher design. The United States produced the destroyer escdort (DE) to meet an Admiralty requirement, and a larger number of these were handed over in 1942 to meet the critical shortage. British and Canadian yards turned out a series of frigates to meet the same requirement, and these proved most successful of all. WIththe exception of some of the earlier sloops and ex-US patrol frigates, the book gives a complete listing of all the front-line escorts in service wit h the RN and RCN." - from the front cover. 149 McCLEMENT, Fred CHURCHILL, Winston) Guns in Paradise : The Saga of the Cruiser Emden. First Edition in dustjacket

Books in English 1914-1978 p.253, Spadoni & Donnelly2029. "The astonishing tale of the brief, meteoric career of the German cr uiser, Emden, during the early months of the First World War hs been told before - but never with such graphic realism, such realism, such absolute attention to historic verity. Fred McClement researched for ten years before he wrote about this ship which seemed to possess almost magical powers. (Atone time the British almost believed that the Germans had thirty-two ships called Emden. Emden captured and sank so many merchant ships that she sent the price of tea, rubber and tin to a dangerously high level. Single-hande d she raided such ports as Madras and Georgetown (Penang), causing great damage and even greater panic - and slipping away so easily as though she really were a ghost ship. Her very presence held up for months much-needed troops, horses, food-stuffs and ammunition in ports from Rangoon to Sydney, from Calcutta to Singapore. (She so delayed the sailing of the desperately required ANZAC contingents that she strained Empire ties almost to the breaking point.) Even when the Emden was finally destroyed, her gallant commander, Karl von Müller, had become so mucn of an international hero that laudatory editorials appeared in all the world's newspapers, including London's Times, and Australia actually declared a von Müller day in his honour. Even after the Emden's destruction, the Arabian-nights escape of thirty members ot her crew across ocean and desert ended in tneir winning further acclaim as world heroes. The excitement and immediacy of the Emden's story is underlined by vivid, on-the-scene descriptions from never-before-published diaries." - from the dj. Chapters : 1. The First Move; 2. The First Capture; 3. To Pagan for Orders; 4. The Naval Plans of 1914; 5. The Long Trip to Bengal;6. Bengal Roulette; 7. Churchill and the Anzacs; 8. The Captures Continue; 9. His sources are literally world-wide; as one is taken through thefamous occasions -- and behind the scenes of action to the diplomatic desk s -- the passages come, in day-to-day chronological sequence, sometimes from previously published books (most of which have been long out of print, others of which have never been available in the English language); sometimesfrom unpublished material (letteres from participants, etc.); sometimes fr om the British side, sometimes from the German side. As Admiral of the Fleet Sir Philip Vian says in his preface: 'Every facet of drama and adventure, from diplomacy on the highest level, through battle at sea, to the courage and stoicism of imprisoned sailors, are indelibly fixed in the multi-colou red mosaic of this vivid narrative.'" - from the dj. MODELSKI, George and William R. THOMPSON. Seapower in Global Politics, 1494-1993 . Seattle, WA: University of Washington Press, (1988). Pp. (4),v-xii,(2),[1]-380,(6). 8vo, blue cloth with gilt lettering to spine. "The key to seapower has been the capital warship, that is a warship capable of fighting a decisive sea battle. Over the centuries the form of that warship has changed, from the great ships of the age of discoveries to the aircraft carriers and missile submarines of today, but the substance of their role has continued and it justifies a comprehensive survey. This book provides an inventory of the world's major navies considered as sources of seapower and as determinants of global politics in the oceanic age. For each year since 1494 the book gives the count of the capital ships of nine 'global powers' -- Portugal, the Netherlands, Britain, the United States, France, Spain, Russia, German and Japan -- and reviews as well the claims of such regional powers as Venice, Italy, the Ottoman Empire and China. A time series of 'globalpower concentration' for the entire period emerges; this shows that the fi ve peaks of seapower concentration (wher one state controlled more than 50 percent of oceanic capital ships) invariably coincided with the world powerphase of the long cycle of global politics." - from the dj. Formac Publishing , Halifax, 2009, ISBN:9780887808357 2009
NAFTEL, William D. Wartime Halifax : The Photo History of a Canadian City at War, 1939-1945. Halifax : Formac Publishing Company Limited, (2009). First Printing. Pp. (5),6-128. Illustrated in black & white. 4to, photo-illustrated pale blue and white card covers with french flaps, blue and white lettering to spine.

"In 1939, Halifax quickly became the country's centre of war activity when Canada declared war on Germany. With its vital naval base and its key role in getting supplies to Great Britain, the city was on a wartime footing for seven long years. Blackouts, enemy ships just offshore, and worries about raids and attacks were part of daily life. So were thousands of soldiers, sailors, airmen and merchant seamen who passed through on their way to or from Europe.

'Wartime Halifax' is a visual history of this period. William Naftel has found a treasure trove of archival photos showing the bustling shipyards, construction, convoys and cadets, and never-before-seen images of parades, platoons and personnel. The photos show the dramatic impact of the war on city life - long lineups at movie theatres, crammed dance halls, and crowded restaurants. Visuals and text convey a unique portrait of a wartime city -- not in far-off Europe but on Canada's east coast." - from front flap.
