141 BRUNNER, Astrid Glass.
AB Collector Publishing, Halifax, 1991, ISBN:1895466008
BRUNNER, Astrid. Glass. Halifax : AB Collector Publishing, (1991). Pp (8),1-71,(1). 8vo, black card covers, with French flaps. Willaim B. Ritchie illustration, "Magpie" as cover art. A book of prose pieces. "GLASS is a collection of short fiction born of the fire and ice of World War Two. These stories are dream evocations of lived reality. Suspended between oblivion and oblivion the narrative voice becomes GLASS. [...] Suspended between oblivionand oblivion the characters in this collection of short fiction have GLASS in their souls. Like magpies they live in a castle of mountain air. There they have stillness and fortitude, gentleness and beauty. There they are wounded and brilliant. [...]" - from rear cover. "GLASS is both an independent collection of short stories and a catalogue essay for a photography exhibition by George Steeves, entitled "Exile: A Journey with Astrid Brunner". From 11 November 1987 to 21 October 1989 (with a one-session coda on 21 December 1990) Steeves and Brunner worked on the "Exile" photo project whose bi-weekly schedule was rarely interrupted They used associative living and working spaces of artist friends, the Nova Scotia seascape, the Halifax cityscape, and their own respective living environments, the rhythm of working together, and the carefully chosen emotive locations nd props, combined to bring from the deep those moods and evocations not usually allowed above sealevel. By reading the soul-layers of his photographic object shrewdly and, at times, cruelly, Steeves freed her into becoming an independent subject with her own language. Without the descrying behind "Exile", the words of GLASS vould forever have remained an unspoken sorrow" - the preface. Very good to fine. 15.00

Illustrated [with 234 photographs. Square 8vo, tan cloth. "Two hundred and thirty-four striking photographs of the port of Boston combine with interpretive commentary to recapturethe flavor, buoyancy, and excitement of the city's years as one of the two or three great American ports. After the Civil War, Boston underwent a rad ical and successful transformation from a declining mercantile home port toan important and competitive modern seaport. At the same time, the transit ion from sail to steam was taking place. Mr Bunting uses photographic studies of deep water sail and steam vessels, naval ships, fishing boats, catboats, tugs, schooners, and sloops, and of the picturesque wharves - all create a kaleidoscopic visual history of these years of change. The volume offers, as well, some of the most distinguished early work in photography, including the widest selection ever published of photographs by pioneer marine photographer Nathaniel Stebbins. Mr. Bunting, a 1969 graduate of Harvard University, is at present a commercial fisherman." - from the dj. 152 BURROUGHS, Polly TILTON, Zebulon Northrop Zeb : A Celebrated Schooner Life. First Edition in dustjacket.
Chatham Press, Riverside, CT , 1972,
BURROUGHS, Polly. Zeb : A Celebrated Schooner Life. Riverside, CT : ChathamPress, Inc., (1972). First Printing. Pp (8),9-160. Illustrated. 4to, grey cloth. With Special Photography by Alfred Eisenstaedt, also Bernice Abbott,Alice Austen, Samuel Chamberlain, Jacob Riis, Morris Rosenfeld and many ot hers. The brief intersection of declining coastwise merchant sail and emergent mass electronic media produced only one genuine star that I am aware of: Zebulon Northrop Tilton, who, with his schooner Alice S. Wentworth, was much fêted by New York stars such as James Cagney and Burgess Meredith, and whose exploits often enlivened Gotham's tabloid papers. " Zebulon Northrop Tilton was a huge cross-eyed schooner captain, born in 1867 on Martha's Vineyard Island, who it is said, could have sailed the Alice S. Wentworth to Chicago on a heavy dew. . His rigorous and celebrated life afloat, his countless shenanigans ashore, his love for women and for his Alice, his enormousskill, strength and wit form the image of an unmistakably real American fo lk hero. Zeb and his famous coastal schooner experienced the heyday and closing of an unforgettable era hauling all manner of freight under sail from the rough docks on South Street in New York to the icy Kennebec River in Maine. " Mrs. Burroughs has faithfully recreated his incredible life and times from masses of newspaper accounts and family records, from the words of friends and cronies, and from a wealth of historic and special contemporary photographs. The result is the true log of a hard and hearty seafaring liferichly and colorfully spiced with authentic Yankee humor and with the many personalities who crossed Zeb's path. " - from the dj. BURSEY, Brian C. Exploring Newfoundland. St. John's : Harry Cuff Publications, 1989. First Edition. Pp [i]-iii,(3),1-[111],(3). 4to, grey cloth, gilt lettering to spine.

114 colour photographs, primarily of the landscape variety.

"Photographers have taken many beautiful pictures in Newfoundland, some of which have been published in books which are to be treasured. To anyone who travels the remote areas of this island, however, it is obvious that a great many more books will not exhaust the interesting material still to be photographed.

The pictures in this book are the result of many years of wilderness travel; hunting with a camera through the forests and barrens of Newfoundland's interior by canoe or on foot, or along the coast. It is the book of a wanderer who is aware that the best of Newfoundland is still comparatively unknown." - from the Introduction.
