Joseph Marc Milner (b. April 12, 1954, Sackville, New Brunswick), noted Canadian military and naval historian.

"From its eighteenth-century roots in exploration and trade, to the major conflicts of the First and Second World Wars, through to current roles in multinational operations with United Nations and NATO forces, Canada's navy - now celebrating its one hundredth anniversary - has been an expression of Canadian nationhood and a catalyst in the complex process of national unity.

In the second edition of Canada's Navy, Marc Milner brings his classic work up to date and looks back at one hundred years of the Navy in Canada. With supplementary photographs, updated sources, a new preface and epilogue, and an additional chapter on the Navy's global reach from 1991 to 2010, this edition carries Canadian Naval history into the twenty-first century. Milner brings effortless prose and exacting detail to discussions about topics as diverse as Arctic sovereignty, fishing wars, and interantional piracy. Comprehensive and accessible, Canada's Navy will continue to provoke discussion about the past and future of the country's naval forces and their evolving role in the interwoven issues of maritime politics and economics, defence and strategy, and national and foreign policy." - from the introductory preamble - p.[i].

"In this enthralling and historically accurate novel, Elizabeth Garrett explores the amazing true story of two of the most famous and daring pirates ever to sail the high seas ... who just so happened to be women. Anne Bonny, a pampered Southern belle with a fiery Irish spirit, hungers for a life more exciting and dangerous than she knows keeping her father's household in order. When she convinces a hapless sailor boy to marry herand take her to Nassau, that seething cauldron of piracy, prostitution, an d all things wicked, she has no idea what she is giving up -- or what she is getting herself into. Calico Jack Rackham, a devious pirate, returns to Nassau with the hope ofa ccepting the governor's pardon and leaving the sweet trade. When he lays eyes on Anne Bonny, however, he realizes that she is the one woman who could convince him to put aside his fear of the noose andtake up the trade again, no matter what the consequences. And Mary Read, a sensible Englishwoman who has been forced by her circumstances to live as a man and earn her livelihood as a merchant sailor, must make a decision when her ship is overtaken by Calico Jack and she is invited to join the bandof thieves. When she first tastes the freedom and joy of a pirate's life, she realizes what she has been missing during all her years of toil. And when she joins forces with Anne, they form a union that will carry them to the ends of the earth, through loves, births, deaths, and battles more exciting than Anne Bonny could have dreamed." - from the dustjacket. With musical notation for most ofthe songs. 8vo, dark blue cloth, gilt lettering to spine. "The sea holds a special mystery for many, and the sailor's life has a romantic aura all it s own. For centuries, songs about the sea have buoyed sailors' spirits throughout their adventures and misfortunes and misfortunes. Bawdy, lyrical, and sentimental, sea songs (-often composed by the sailors themselves) tell of every aspect of nautical life, of battles and mutiny, of shipwreck and cannibalism, of pressgangs and piracy. of work and conditions on board, of families at home and sweethearts in every port. This anthology gathers from awide variety of sources 159 ballads and shanties with their tunes wherever possible, ranging geographically over the seven seas and chronologically o ver four centuries, starting with "John Dory" from the 1560s and concludingwith "The Final Trawl" from 1979. These songs were intended to be sung and heard, as well as read, and the impulse that produced them was never narro wly aesthetic. The purpose of shanties was to lighten labour and to further the task at hand : ballads, whether forebitters or shore songs, were meant to celebrate and entertain. And whatever the form, there is an abundance ofpoetry in the vivid energy of the language and the many moods it evokes. I n his introduction and commentaries, Roy Palmer provides a wealth of technical and historical detail that offers a fascinating backtground to the songs. A glossary of nautical terms is also included." - from the dj. Includes The Banks of Newfoundland (I) and The Banks of Newfoundland (II).
