Naval Institute Press, Annapolis, MD, 1981, 1981 0870215477 / 9780870215476
(FULTON, Robert). HUTCHEON, Wallace S., Jr. Robert Fulton : Pioneer of Undersea Warfare. Annapolis, Maryland : Naval Institute Press, (1981). First Edition. Pp (8),[ix]-xii,(2),[1]-191,(3). Illustrations in the text. 8vo, red-brown cloth, gilt lettering to spine.

Wallace Schoonmaker Hutcheon, Jr (b. June 27, 1933, New York City - d. October 7, 2015, Fairfax, Virginia).

"Robert Fulton is recognized as the inventor of the steamboat but until now has been virtually unknown as a pioneer in naval warfare, even though his work included the development of the submarine, the mine, and the first steam warship. Fulton himself felt that his naval innovations would ultimately prove more significant than the steamboat, and a host of admirers, including President Thomas Jefferson, agreed.

This carefully researched and highly readablr book is the first to focus on vcontribitions to naval warfare. It paints a vivid picture of the handsome, charming, and complex genius who propsed himself for a key cabinet post - Secretary of the Navy - in President Madison's administration.

Born into a poor farming family, young Fulton originally supported himself as a painter. he went to London in 1787 to become a protegé of the famous American artist and court painter, Benjamin West. Later, however, Fulton's interest shifted from artistic to mechanical endeavors and he became an authority on canal engineering.

Moving to paris for a canal project, Fulton began working on the development of the submarine. During this period he concieved and tested his submarine the Nautilus, experimented with mines, and evised a scheme to use the steamboat to ferry napoleaon's invasion force across the English Channel. Fulton's inventions were rejected by the French, however, so he took them to her enemies.

His naval work in England centered on mine warfare, highlighted by two minelaying raids against the French fleet and a cuccessful demonstration of his mines' effectiveness in destroying a large vessel.

Returning to his native land in 1806, Fulton developed the idea of a moored mine for harbor defense. He experimented with an anchor cutter and a submarine gun and was active in various ways in the War of 1812. In the final years of his life he developed the first steam warship in istory and a large semi-submarine called the Mute.

Ironically, as the author points out, the broad and comprehensive program of naval warfare developed by a genius of the Enlightenment had to wait for twentieth century fruition." - from the dj.

"At ten o ciock on me mgm ot January 14, 1942, a German U-boat, running on the surface, approached the opening to New York Harbor's Lower Bay. Althouqh the United States and Germany had been at war for more than a month, New York's skyline was not blacked out. On the contrary, it was so brilliantly lit that the crewmen on U- 123's conning tower, eager for their first glimpse of the world's largest city, could only gape in astonishment at the sight. Nor was there any U.S. Navy response to their presence - even though U-123 had sunk two ships on its way over from France, one the night before off Long Island; even though twenty-five U.S. destroyers were in position to defend the coast and its shipping; and even thouqh British cryptanalysts. having broken the German naval cipher, had tracked this U-boat and four others to American shores and had provided their day-by day positions and courses to U.S. Navy headquarters in Washington.

Operation Drumbeat was the code name of this first German assault against the United States in World War II. Author Michael Gannon focuses on U-123, the most successful U-boat in the assault torce, and on her commander, Reinhard Hardegen, who sank nineteen ships on two American patrols and twice received Germany's hiahest decoration, the Knight's Cross. Gannon's history includes the other Drumbeat U-boats, two of which operated in Canadian waters. " - from the dj.
