146 CABLE, James Studies in International Security No. 16 Gunboat Diplomacy 1919-1979, Political Applications of Limited Naval Force. Second Edition in dustjacket
St. Martin's Press, New York, 1981, ISBN:0312353464
CABLE, James. Gunboat Diplomacy 1919-1979, Political Applications of Limited Naval Force. New York : St. Martin's Press, (1976). Second Edition, Revised. Pp (8),9-288. Tables in text. 8vo, black cloth, gilt lettering to spine. No. 16 in the Studies in International Security series. "Until this book first appeared in 1971, most people thought that gunboat diplomacy was a thing of the past. Readers of the first edition were startled by the evidencethat navies had been active in every peacetime year from 1919 to 1969. Jam es Cable not only illuminated this aspect of naval history but also contributed new insights in explanation, argument and prediction. As late as 1976,Richard Hill, writing in Survival, remarked that "since 1971 nobody has be en able to discuss sea power without mentioning Cable." This second editionis intended to expand the original argument by surveying the record of the seventies. The author demonstrates that warships acting in conditions of n ominal peace, helped to save Israel, to partition Cyprus, to seize islands and to rescue prisoners. He explains why these episodes were successful andwhy other such maneuvers were unsuccessful, whether they were off Iceland early in the decade or in the Arabian Sea at the end of the decade. The newedition retains the author's lively narrative, crisp argument, and his com pact, yet comprehensive presentation of a neglected chapter in the naval history of our times. For naval officers and diplomats, for the students and practitioners of politics and international relations, for everyone concerned with crisis management, this is a standard work now brought up to date."- from the dj. Contents : Preface. Introduction. Introduction to Revised E dition. 1. Definitions. 2. Principles and precedents of limited naval force: I.: Definitive force: Altmark and Pueblo. II.; Purposeful Force: Corfu and Kuwait. III. Catalytic Force: From the Baltic to Beirut. IV. Expressive Force: Deutschland to Dedalo. 3. The altered environment. 4. Naval capacities and doctrines. 5. The Soviet naval enigma. 6. Applications. Appendix One.Sixty Years of Gunboat Diplomacy. Appendix Two. The Sea Changes of the Sev enties.
