165 FETZER, Glenn W. Palimpsests of the Real in Recent French Poetry.
Rodopi, Amsterdam - New York, 2004, ISBN:9042017627
FETZER, Glenn W. Palimpsests of the Real in Recent French Poetry. Amsterdam– New York : Rodopi, 2004. First Edition. Chiasma 15. Pp [1]-158,(2). 8vo, illustrated blue and grey card covers. "The richness and diversity of poet ic voices in France since the mid-twentieth century sharpen the challenge of charting the poetic landscape in ways that are accessible and cohesive. Since poetry in France has long demonstrated a predisposition to philosophical questions. Palimpsests of the Real in Recent French Poetry reads the work of six poets through the lens of the Pre-Socratics. The poets discussed range from the well-known - Jacques Dupin, André du Bouchet, Eugène Guillevic - to the lesser celebrated - Jean-Louis Chrétien, Céline Zins, and Emmanuel Hocquard. What binds these six together is an interest in the real, and a fascination with the ways of sensing one's world, of experiencing time, unity, memory, and change. For each poet, the aesthetic character of the work takes precedence, and its presentation is informed by the philosophical groundwork laid by ancient thinkers. Written not only for specialists but also for students and all readers with a general interest in literature and poetry, this book provides introductory material to each poet considered as well as offering critical readings that never stray far from the poetic texts." - from the back cover. FORD, R.A.D. A Window on the North. Toronto : The Ryerson Press, (June 1956). First Edition. Pp (4),v-vi,(2),3-48,(2). 8vo, grey boards, brown lettering to front board and spine. Robert Arthur Douglas Ford (b. January 8, 1915, Ottawa - d. April 12, 1998, Vichy, France) was a Canadian poet, translator and diplomat. "The north and the south: these are the main influences in the poetry of Mr. Ford. And with a high receptivity to extreme, it was luckthat took him in the service of Canadian diplomacy from the feminine grace of Rio-de-Janeiro to the hard masculinity of Moscow. Throughout his poems, even those on strictly Canadian themes, these two influences constantly re appear. The book is divided into three parts, of which the third, 'Luis Medias Pontual in Red Square,' is perhaps the most important. It was written just after the war, in Moscow, and reflects the impact on the author of the many disenchanged Spanish Republic émigrés whom he encountered at that time. In the person of Luis Medias Pontual the poem tries to portray the tragedy of the western intellectual of the left, awakening to bitter disillusionment, and of the incapacity of the Westerner to comprehend the mystery of Russia." - from the dj. The poems: Part I. Middle of the Century. "Lynx", "Twenty Below ", "The Golden Grove", "The Stranger with the Hammer of Thor", "A.
