Sketches of Incidents and Adventures in the Life of Thomas Elworth , ELWORTH, Thomas
163 ELWORTH, Thomas Sketches of Incidents and Adventures in the Life of Thomas Elworth
Brainard & Co., 1844,
ELWORTH, Thomas. Sketches of Incidents and Adventures in the Life of ThomasElworth, the American Pedestrian. Boston: Brainard & Co., 1844. Pp. (2),[i ii]-viii,[1]-68. 8vo, plain self-wraps. The author, born in Perry, Maine in1816, leads the reader on a personal odyssey of his life, from his early y ears growing up in Nova Scotia, traipsing the roads between Halifax and Windsor as a young boy, often relying on the kindness of passing travellers toprovide a night's accommodation or a few days work. Upon leaving home at t he tender age of ten, young Thomas decided that a life aboard ship would suit him well, serving as a cook on a trading schooner, working for a Pictou ship-builder, and later, sailing on schooners to the Caribbean. It soon becomes apparent that young Elworth saw himself as something of a romantic hero, recalling how he gallantly risked his life to rescue a drowing lass who flung herself into the sea when their eyes met, or when, as a passenger on a schooner bound for Saint John, he took the ship's wheel during a fierce storm, when the captain could no longer manage to steer the vessel clear, averting a near disaster. Between his sailing adventures, he would often return to his familiar haunts in Nova Scotia, walking great distances, knowing he could always rely on "... my own good legs with a strong body to supportthem". By the age of 20, he claimed to have been a mail carrier, walking b etween the towns of Windsor and Lunenburg, carrying the fifteen pound bags, for twenty dollars a month, as well as a fox trapper, sometimes trapping a s many as 50 animals a day, living off the money he made selling the pelts for two dollars a piece to traders. For three years, he said that he workedin St. Louis, Missouri, as a city night watchman, day police officer, carr ier of two daily newspapers, runner for an insurance company, general bill poster and collector (all apparently at the same time). In 1842, he informed a man that he could walk 1000 miles in 1000 consecutive hours and was challenged to do just that. He includes an exhaustive table of the times and speeds with which he succeeded in this feat, along with personal comments onthe weather, what he wore on rainy days, his health and the food he ate du ring his "arduous task". The following year he was challenged to repeat theevent again and once more, he succeeded. Soon after, it was suggested that he "... perform 1,000 miles as quick as the fastest horse that could be pr oduced. " Fortunately for Thomas Elworth, it was somewhat late in the season, and the race was put on hold until a later date. The author concludes with a short poetical work and his assurances that he would hopefully appear before the public in the near future, as either a pedestrian or a writer. Not in TPL, Lande. Lacking front cover, with original rear wrap. First leaf and rear wrap soiled, with the rear being creased and partially detached, corners bumped, a few pages dog-eared, with some light smudges at the top corners, else a delightfully unabashed account of the author's "life". 1,000.00
