163 DGE, C. W. POTTS, C. R. Historical Survey of the Somerset and Dorset Railway : Track Layouts and Illustrations. Second Printing in dustjacket
Oxford Publishing Co., Poole, Dorset, 1985, ISBN:0860939933
DGE, C. W., and C. R. POTTS. An Historical Survey of the Somerset and Dorset Railway : Track Layouts and Illustrations. (Poole, Dorset) : Oxford Publishing Co., (1985). Second Printing. Pp (3),4-135,(1). Illustrated. 4to, blue cloth, gilt lettering to spine. "The Somerset & Dorset Joint Railway is one of that special 'select' number of lines which evokes a particular thrill among rail enthusiasts. In itself, other than the stiff climbs through the Mendips from bath to Evercreech Junction and the sylvan scenery through which the line passed, there was nothing to especially commend it to the enthusiast. however, with such stock as 'Jinty' 0-6-0Ts; 4F 0-6-0s; Johnson 0-4-4Ts; 2P 4-4-0s; Stainer 'Black Fives' and the famous 7F 2-8-0s the route exhibited a totally different flavour to the norm. With such evocative trains as the 'Pines Express' and with Bulleid Pacifics also to be seen in latter years, the line was certainly not ordinary." - from the dustjacket. 177 DOYLE, Roddy Last Roudup, Volume Three Dead Republic. First Canadian Edition in dustjacket, signed by author
Alfred A. Knopf Canada, Toronto, 2010, ISBN:9780307398970
DOYLE, Roddy. The Dead Republic. Volume Three of The Last Roundup. (Toronto): Alfred A. Knopf Canada, (2010). First Canadian Printing. Pp (8),3-329,(1). 8vo [165 x 240 mm], blue cloth, gilt lettering to spine. Roddy Doyle (born in Dublin May 8, 1958) is an Irish novelist, dramatist and screenwriter At the end of Oh, Play That Thing, the second volume of Roddy Doyle's trilogy about Henry Smart, Henry, his leg severed in an accident with a railway boxcar, crawls into the Utah desert to die only to be discovered by John Ford, who's there shooting his latest Western. Ford recognizes a fellow Irishrebel and determines to turn Henry's story a boy volunteer at the GPO in 1 916, a hitman for Michael Collins, a republican legend into a film. He appoints him "IRA consultant" on his new film, The Quiet Man. The Dead Republicopens in 1951 with Henry returning to Ireland for the first time since his escape in 1922. With him are the stars of Ford's film, John Wayne and Maur een O'Hara, and the famous director himself, "Pappy," who, in a series of intense, highly charged meetings tries to suck the soul out of Henry and turn it into Hollywood gold-dust. Ten years later Henry is in Dublin, working in Ratheen as a school caretaker, loved by the boys, who call him "Hoppy Henry" on account of his wooden leg. When Henry is caught in a bomb blast, that wooden leg gets left behind. He soon finds himself a hero: the old IRA veteran who's lost his leg to a UVF bomb. Wheeled out by the Provos at funerals and rallies, Henry is to find he will have other uses too, when the peace process begins in deadly secrecy... In three brilliant novels, A Star Called Henry, Oh, Play That Thing and The Dead Republic, Roddy Doyle has toldthe whole history of Ireland in the twentieth century. And in the person o f his hero, he has created one of the great characters of modern fiction." (from the dj).
