1964,
AMADO, Jorge. Home is the Sailor : The Whole Truth Concerning the Redoubtful Adventures of Captain Vasco Moscoso de Aragao, Master Mariner. Translated from the Portuguese by Harriet de Onís. New York : Alfred A. Knopf, 1964. First American Edition. Pp 298. 8vo, blue cloth, gilt lettering and decoration to spine, gilt JA device to front board.

Krummes, Steamer Stories : An Annotated Bibliography of Steamship Fiction, 1845-2012 p. 7.

A novel.

"Good-natured, incompetent, friendly, and lustful - at sixty the crony of college students and high-living officials - Vasco Moscoso de Aragao laments that his life as the son of a wealthy merchant has brought him no rank, degree, or title. So - though Vasco has never made a sea voyage - a friend gets him a licence as a ship's captain. Moving to Periperi in the suburbs of Bahía, he takes up with relish the life of an honored, retired old sea dog surrounded by nautical instruments, sea-going uniforms, and listeners eager for his "reminiscences" of the oceans and exotic lands that he has visited. Vasco is so endlessly and colorfully inventive that only a few of his canniest neighbors begin to suspect the truth.

When the northbound good ship Ita comes into Bahía with her captain dead, Vasco - the only licenced captain in the area - is dragooned into completing her voyage up the coast to Belém as master (with the understanding that he will be free to call on the first mate for all important decisions). On the voyage, Vasco enjoys himselt, whiling away the time in social activities and in pursuing a lady passenger of forty, to whom he becomes engaged. But deceiving sailors turns out to be not so easy as dazzling landlubbers, and what t happens then and thereafter is almost (but not quite) beyond belief." - from the dj.

Viking Press, New York, 1977, ISBN:0670115223
AMIS, Kingsley. The Alteration. New York : The Viking Press, (1977). First American Edition. Winner of the 1977 John W. Campbell Memorial Award for Best Science Fiction Novel "The year is 1976, and Stephen III, King of England, has lately died. Mozart's Second Requiem (K.878) is being sung at the Cathedral Basilica of St. George at Coverley (pronounced Cowley) for the laying-to-rest of the monarch. Above choir and orchestra soars the faultless boy soprano voice of Hubert Anvil. It is a once-in-a-century talent. Althoughhe cannot yet know it, today's performance before a brilliant internationa l congregation - including two emissaries of the Holy Office - will alter his destiny but save his voice if certain of his elders have their way. In the world-as-we-know-it the last such castrato died in 1922, but this is another world altogether, spared the Reformation back in the sixteenth centurywhen Martin Luther became Pope. As Hubert is made aware of what may be in store for him, some unsuspected allies, including his father's not-so-celibate chaplain and the New Englander ambassador spring up. Around him swirls a whirlpool of piety, menace, terror, and passion - a vortex from which no reader can or will escape until the final resolution." - from the dj. AMIS, Kingsley. The Biographer's Moustache. (London) : Flamingo, (1995). First Printing. Pp 282. 8vo, blue cloth. "Deliciously wicked and delightfullymischievous, The Biographer`s Moustache mercilessly exposes a literary wor ld of pretension and vanity while poignantly revealing the potential for love across the social divide.". "Gordon Scott-Thompson, a struggling hack, gets commissioned to write the biography of veteran novelist, Jimmie Fane. It is a task which proves to be fraught with extraordinary and unforeseen difficulties. Fane, an unashamed snob, has many pet hates, including younger men with moustaches and trendy pronuncation. Scott-Thompson, however, is extrememly attached to his own moustache and not so particular about his use of language. It doesn't help matters that Fane's wife Joanna isn't yet surewhat she feels about moustaches, but has decided views on younger men. " F ine in dustjacket. 14.00
