195 BEERBOHM, Max. TURNER, Reggie. HART-DAVIS, Rupert, ed. WILDE, Oscar). Letters to Reggie Turner. First Edition in dustjacket.
Rupert Hart-Davis, London, 1964,
BEERBOHM, Max. Letters to Reggie Turner. Edited by Rupert Hart-Davis. London: Rupert Hart-Davis, (1964). First Printing. Pp. (6),7-312, + 16 p. of plates. Illustrated in black and white. 8vo, dark blue-grey cloth with gilt lettering to spine, top edge dyed black. "Max Beerbohm went up to Merton College, Oxford, in 1890, and there met Reggie Turner, who was two years his senior. Their friendship lasted unbroken until Reggie's death in 1938, and isnow preserved in these two hundred letters. Reggie was a lonely and in man y ways a disappointed man: in none of his twelve novels could he reproduce the wit and spontaneity of his conversation, which some thought as brilliant as that of his friend Oscar Wilde; and Max's friendship was previous to him. Moreover his ready understanding and unfailing sympathy caused everyoneto write more frankly and fully to him than to anyone else. Max was never a copious or a willing letter-writer, and there is no other series of his letters so varied, revealing and affectionate as these. A hundred of Reggie's letters to Max have survived, and relevant extracts from them are here given in footnotes. The book is ilustrated with Max's incidental caricatures and with contemporary photographs." - from the dustjacket. Very good in lightly spine-browned, unclipped dustjacket. 35.00

199 BELL, Michael. Critical Idiom, 20). Primitivism. The Critical Idiom 20. First Edition in dustjacket.
Methuen, London, 1972, ISBN:0416078907
BELL, Michael. Primitivism. The Critical Idiom 20. (London): Methuen & Co. Ltd., (1972). First Printing. Pp. (10),[1]-93,(1). 8vo, greyish-green clothwith pressed lettering to front board, gilt lettering to spine. Volume 20 in The Critical Idiom series. General editor: John D. Jump. "Primitivist aspirations are a permanent aspect of civilised self-reflection, not least atthe present time, and literary primitivism is one of the most complex and revealing expressions of this impulse. This study combines a brief historical and theoretical cartography with a consideration of the moral and imaginitive status of primitivist expression. Since there is no fixed entity thatcan usefully be called the 'primitive', but many imaginative projections w hose meaning and value can only be examined in terms of their artistic context, this study gives a detailed consideration of sveral authors such as Conrad, Lawrence, Melville and Golding, who have in different ways invited the term 'primitivist'. Two principal categories are distniguished: those writers who attempt to re-create the essential qualities of a pre-civilised mind, and those who in some way use the primitive motif more externally as anidea or metaphor." -from the dustjacket.
