181 BONDRUP-NIELSEN, Soren. Sound Like Water Dripping : In Search of the Boreal Owl. First Edition, Paperback.
Gaspereau Press, Kentville, NS, 2009, ISBN:9781554470747
BONDRUP-NIELSEN, Soren. A Sound Like Water Dripping : In Search of the Boreal Owl . Kentville, NS: Gaspereau Press, 2009. First Printing. Pp. (10),11-236,(4). Illustrated in black and white. 8vo, decorated black card covers in white jacket. "In the spring of 1974, Soren Bondrup-Nielsen, a graduate student in biology, travelled to the boreal forest of northern Ontario in search of the tiny, elusive Boreal Owl. His supervisor had made a well-intended attempt to persuade him that there were easier ways to earn a degree than by searching for the proverbial needle in a haystack, but Bondrup-Nielsen's youthful enthusiasm would not be dampened. In subsequent field seasons in Ontario adn Alberta, Bondrup-Nielsen recorded and photographed Boreal Owls, studying their diet, habitat and courtship. His efforts resulted in the first nesting record for the species in Ontario. This book recounts the author's youthful adventures living in tents, cabins and bunkhouses and travelling by snowshoe, ski and bicycle, following his quest into the boreal heartland. While his research and methodology provde the framework, the story'strue focus lies in the author's sylvan encounters -- with birds, trees, vo les, coyotes, bears, moose, birders, loggers, tree planters -- and the jubilation of first love and self-discovery. Bondrup-Nielsen reminds usof the importance of curiosity, passion and persistence in the study of ornithologyand ecology." - from the front flap. Very good. 20.00

BOURINOT, Arthur S. Archibald Lampman's Letters to Edward William Thomson, 1890-1898. Edited with an introduction, annotations, a bibliography with notes, and his "Essay on Happiness" by Arthur S. Bourinot. Ottawa : Publishedby the editor at 158 Carleton Road, Rockcliffe Park, (1956). Limited Editi on of 500 Copies. Pp. (6),1-74. 8vo, stapled printed yellow card covers. Wicken : "Archibald Lampman : An Annotated Bibliography" B164. Edward WilliamThomson (b. February 12, 1849, Toronto township, Peel County, Ontario – d. March 5, 1924 in Boston) was a Canadian journalist and writer. "Thomson an d Lampman had been friends since the publication of 'Among the Millet' (1888). Thomson was then editor of 'The Globe', Toronto, and he wrote a friendly editorial suggesting government recognition and fostering of Canadian genius by the appointment of men like Lampman to better positions in the CivilService. On his part, Lampman tried to place some of Thomson's stories wit h Scribners and Harpers, where Lampman's work frequently appeared. In fact,no Canadian poet living in Canada, (I say, 'living in Canada', because Rob erts, Carman and Stringer , all had appreciative American admirers, but allthree, for a time, at least, livied in the USA), before or since (except p erhaps Service) has had such appreciative public in the States. Early in 1891, Thomson left 'The Globe' to become editor of 'The Youth's Companion'. That is really the beginning of the correspondence. These letters were written during the years 1891 to 1898, starting when Lampman was 31 years of ageand ending in the year before his death. [...] The letters reveal the man and poet as he was in real life from day to day and hour to hour. Sensitiveand retiring, not always sure of himself, yet ambitious and anxious to get himself out of the civil service where he felt he was in a rut." - from th e introduction, p.6. "It's a perfectMay day in Regina, and the forsythia in Joanne Kilbourn's garden is in daz zling bloom. Friends and neighbours have gathered there to celebrate the fiftieth birthday of Joanne's new husband, Zack Shreve, among them Ginny Monaghan, the Conservative MP for their riding, whose presence causes quite a stir. A general election is just weeks away, and she is here to charm everyone into ignoring rumours about her recent sexual escapades. Ginny knows herpolitical future is in the balance, and she needs all the help she can get . By the end of the party, the sadness Zack's been feeling ever since his friend Ned Osler took his own life a few weeks earlier has lifted. But then his cellphone rings, and it's not someone calling to wish him happy birthday. It's the police with the news that a local call girl has been found murdered, a call girl with an impressive client list. Two names on it stand out: Ned Osler and Zack Shreve. Shaken by Zack's revelation that before he mether he regularly saw this woman, Joanne throws herself into her work -- a project on women and politics that Monaghan has agreed to co-operate with. But she's haunted by the prostitute's death and decides to find out why thedead woman had started to threaten her clients with blackmail, an investig ation that risks not just her marriage but her life. In 'The Brutal Heart',Bowen expertly mixes the ingredients of marriage, family, politics -- and murder -- into a constantly surprising and compulsively readable story. As Zack tells Joanne, it's the loose ends of our lives that hang us." - from the dustjacket. Very good in unclipped dustjacket. 18.00

Gail Dianne Bowen, née Bartholomew (b. September 22, 1942, Toronto).

"Joanne Kilbourn and her husband, lawyer Zack Shreve, are proud parents of a budding art star. Everyone agrees that Taylor -- who hasn't yet turned fifteen -- is a gifted painter.

But the Shreves' pride is laced with concern: two of Taylor's works are hot items in a fundraising auction for the Racette-Hunter Centre, a multi-usefacility being build to serve North Central Regina's diverse community. Joanne and Zack have seen one of the paintings, but Taylor has carefully guarded the other, a portrait of a young male artist's model. When BlueBoy 21 is finally revealed, it sparks a new kind of relationship bewteen Taylor and her model, Julian Zentner, and becomes the centre of a series of troubling incidents, including theft, blackmail, and a shocking act of violence that threatens to ruin the lives of people close to the Kilbourn-Shreve family.

As Joanne and Zack work to keep everyone safe while searching out the truth behind more than one crime, Joanne grows increasingly uneasy about Julian's influence on Taylor. The more Joanne learns about him, the more certain she is that nobody knows the real Julian, and that there is something sinister in his plans for Taylor that may have irreparable consequences for an adolescent girl. When Taylor, always open-hearted and close to her parents, begins to shut them out, Joanne and Zack's darkest fears seem about to be realized." - from the dustjacket.

Gail Dianne Bowen, née Bartholomew (b. September 22, 1942, Toronto).

"A languid summer night at Lawyers' Bay is shattered by the noise of a car racing to the end of a dock and plunging into the deep, murky water of a northern lake. Help is there in minutes, but it comes too late for Chris Altieri, the young lawyer alone inside the car.

So begins Gail Bowen's thrilling new mystery, one that takes readers into the dangerously entangled affairs of a prestigious law firm, and returns Joanne to the heartbreak of an old love affair -- and to the promising start of another.

Clearly, Altieri intended to die; this death wasno accident. Just hours earlier, he'd admitted to Joanne Kilbourn that he'd done something unforgivable. At the time, the confession seemed to have eased his mind, but now he is dead. What happened in the interim, Joanne wonders.

Joanne and two of her children are staying at a cottage in the same gated enclave as Chris Altieri and his partners from Falconer Shreve. All the lawyers have summer homes on the same bay, and all are now in shock over Chris's death. Or are they? Joanne is puzzled by how swiftly the lawyers close ranks, and that's not all that strikes her as odd. Why is her former lover, Inspector Alex Kequahtooway, involved in the police investigation of asuicide out at the lake?

When Joanne learns that a young female lawyer abr uptly left Falconer Shreve months earlier and hasn't been seen since, her instincts tell her that something is terribly wrong.
