183 BLUNT, Giles Blackfly Season : A novel. First Edition
Random House Canada, Toronto, 2005, ISBN:0679312439
BLUNT, Giles. Blackfly Season : A novel. (Toronto) : Random House Canada, (2005). First Printing. Pp. (6),[1]-326,(4). 8vo, black paper-covered boardswith gilt lettering to spine.

Giles Blunt (b. February 2, 1952, Windsor, Ontario).

This is No.3 in the excellent John Cardinal series.

"It's spring in Algonquin Bay, and the blackflies are driving people a little mad. Detectives John Cardinal and Lise Delorme have a different sort of mystery on their hands: a young woman has wandered bug-bitten out of the bush and can't remember who she is or how she got there. The reason? A small-calibre bullet is delicately lodged in her brain.

Then a body turns up in a cave in the woods, the corpse of one Wombat Guthrie, a biker / drug dealer whose head, hands and feet have been removed but whose tattoos are unmistakeable. At first the two cases could not seem further apart. But subsequent clues, and another brutal murder, seem to connect both of them to the fortunes of a small, even amateurish, drug gang that has recently hit the big time under the leadership of an Ojibwa shaman named Red Bear.

With the help of a neuropsychologist, the mysterious young woman regains some of her memory. But try as he might, Cardinal just can't tie the threads together. And Delorme begins to suspect that the innocent young woman may not be so innocent after all, and that her recently returned 'memories' may not be the whole truth. Red Bear may not be what he seems, either. Is he really a native shaman or is he a monster with an appetite for savage murder?" - from the dust jacket.

Giles Blunt (b. February 2, 1952, Windsor, Ontario).

Blunt's first published novel.

"Enter the fury-haunted and terrifying world of artist Nicholas Hood and be sure you will not, cannot, leave it before the final cast of fate's dice. Nick is an angry man. At thirty-five he has yet to make a significant sale; among the half dozen artists at his dealer's show, he is the only one overlooked by the Times's critic; his paintings of imaginary murders in vivid New York settings, while admired for their technique, are faulted for their lack of conviction. His musician wife, Susan, is the sole breadwinner. Nick is entertaining thoughts of suicide when he encounters a strange man in a bar - a dwarfish, pitted, and hideous man with a compelling voice and message, one Andre Bellisle.

Bellisle says he can help Nick - for a price - and proceeds in chilling fashion to prove his point. Hle can foresee the deaths of others and thus can thus position Nick to achieve the reality that has eluded him in his murder paintings." - from the dust jacket.

September 15, 2012, Toronto) was a Canadian journalist, naturalist, and author of severalnovels. "Ashley Morden, a Canadian scientist, had reluctantly agreed to wo rk on a government project. When the novel opens, he was on the way to his assignment, flying over the vast subarctic wilderness in a jet piloted by Wing Commander Ron Dorkett. During an ice storm, the engines failed; a crashwas inevitable. Ash had to parachute alone into the snow-covered lake coun try. There, in pain and delirium, he thought he was being taken care of by Margo, the girl he had loved so long ago. He relived the past that involvedRon and Margo, that took him again on the bombing raids over Germany and t o the fatal act that was to give Ron the chance to destroy him. Now, after years of dedicated research, Ash had made the discovery responsible for hisgoing on the hated mission and his meeting with Ron. When Ash returned to consciousness, he realized that it was not Margo who had found him. It was Lilka, a German girl who had been brought up in the isolated northland by her war-twisted father. Elusive and beautiful, she was as much a part of thewild as the animals she knew so well. As the relationship between Ash and Lilka changed from fear and dependency to love, she revealed to him the secret of the wilderness -- a secret that could change the world." - from the dustjacket. (14),3-400,(4). 8vo, red cloth spine with patterned greypaper covered boards, silver lettering to spine, top edge stained red. Wat ters p.250, Rhodenizer p.799. The second novel by Fred Bodsworth (b. October 11, 1918, Port Burwell, Ontario - d. September 15, 2012, Toronto) Canadian journalist, naturalist, and author. "In Toronto, Rory Macdonald, a fiercely ambitious young Scot studying to be a naturalist, wins a summer job banding Canada geese to trace their migrations... In the bleak muskeg country of James Bay, a Cree Indian girl, Kanina, educated with white people but rejected by the white community when she became a teacher, is returning with bitterness in her heart to rejoin her illiterate family and sink back into the harsh primitive life of her people... Caught inthe backlash of a hurricane, a wild barnacle goose is blown westward across the Atlantic from the Scottish island of Barra to northern Canada... The lives of these three are interwoven as the mating of the lost goose is linked to the forbidden love that grows between the naturalist and the uprooted Indian girl who helps himwith his work. Rarely has a novelist woven together a drama of nature and human beings with such singular beauty and depth of understanding. Neverhasthere been a story quite like this one. The reader hangs on breathless aon the fate of the barnacle goose -- the strange one of Barra -- as on the de stiny of the two people forwhom the great-hearted bird symbolizes their fears and their hope." - from the dustjacket. BONDRUP-NIELSEN, Soren. A Sound Like Water Dripping : In Search of the Boreal Owl . Kentville, NS: Gaspereau Press, 2009. First Printing. Pp. (10),11-236,(4). Illustrated in black and white. 8vo, decorated black card covers in white jacket. "In the spring of 1974, Soren Bondrup-Nielsen, a graduate student in biology, travelled to the boreal forest of northern Ontario in search of the tiny, elusive Boreal Owl. His supervisor had made a well-intended attempt to persuade him that there were easier ways to earn a degree than by searching for the proverbial needle in a haystack, but Bondrup-Nielsen's youthful enthusiasm would not be dampened. In subsequent field seasons in Ontario adn Alberta, Bondrup-Nielsen recorded and photographed Boreal Owls, studying their diet, habitat and courtship. His efforts resulted in the first nesting record for the species in Ontario. This book recounts the author's youthful adventures living in tents, cabins and bunkhouses and travelling by snowshoe, ski and bicycle, following his quest into the boreal heartland. While his research and methodology provde the framework, the story'strue focus lies in the author's sylvan encounters -- with birds, trees, vo les, coyotes, bears, moose, birders, loggers, tree planters -- and the jubilation of first love and self-discovery. Bondrup-Nielsen reminds usof the importance of curiosity, passion and persistence in the study of ornithologyand ecology." - from the front flap. Very good. 20.00
