30 BUXTON, Judith Mercury Series History Division Paper No. 30 Selected Canadian Spinning Wheels in Perspective : An Analytical Approach. Reprint.
Canadian Museum of Civilization, Hull, QC, 1992, ISBN:0660140004
BUXTON, Judith. Selected Canadian Spinning Wheels in Perspective : An Analytical Approach. (Hull, QC) : Canadian Museum of Civilization, (1992). Reprint. Pp (4),i-viii,1-328.Illustrated with drawings and some b&w photos. Large 8vo (8˝ x 11 inches), photo-illustrated salmon yellow card covers. Mercury Series History Division Paper No. 30. "This report arose from a desire topursue an investigation of the processes and artifacts of spinning in Cana da which would be independent of and not ancillary to a study on weaving. Preliminary research demonstrated that considerable handspinning in Canada was devoted to alternate pursuits, particularly knitting but also hooking and other textile crafts. This was especially true for regions such as Newfoundland, the Prairie Provinces, and British Columbia. In addition, native spinning was a critical undertaking not only to provide threads for weaving but also for net-making, cordage, line, various fastenings, and some types of basket-making. All of this seemed to indicate that in order to be fully appreciated and understood handspinning, as a subject for study, had to be regarded as a craft and/or industry on its own." - from the preface. Contents : I. An Introduction to Spinning. A. The Spinning Process. B. Spindles. II. Spinning Wheel Analysis. A. Adding a Wheel: The Drive System, Pulley Systems, Gear Systems. B. Supplying the Energy, Hand-Turned Wheels, Treadle Wheels. C. Winding Up the Yarn, Intermittent Wind, Continuous Wind, Tensioning Devices. D. Style. III. A Survey of Selected Canadian Wheels. A. Toward aClassification of System of Wheels. B. Wheel Descriptions. C. Origins and Regional Variations. D. Manufacture of Canadian Wheels. E. Spinning in Canada. IV. Appendix : Auxiliary Equipment.
