The book offers an entirely new perspective on the study of the Mediterranean andits peoples. The cultures and civilizations that evolved on its shores sha ped the history of mankind. Since prehistoric times, this great sea has provided both a barrier and a bridge for the people who live around it. Modernscientific and historical research is building new bridges and breaking do wn old barriers. In this fascinating book Sarah Arenson uses the latest research in maritime studies - history, marine science, archaeology, social anthropology, marine engineering and geophysics - to explore the unique contribution that the Mediterranean has made to modern civilization. For this sea, the sea in the midst of the earth, was the heart of the old world. Asia,Africa and Europe converge upons its shores. The book begins by describing some of the creation myths and the earlies encounters of men and sea, draw ing on the astonish finds of underwater archaeology. The study of fishing and coastal industries show the evolution of peoples living on the water's edge. The developments of ship construction and port engineering, and the intricacies of trade organization point to the cohesiveness of Mediterranean maritime civilization. Naval warfare, piracy and the law of the sea are just a few of the other subjects investigated." - ftom the dj flap. Chapters :1. After Tethys; 2. The Fish Hunt; 3. The Water's Edge; 4. BARFORD, N. C. Experimental Measurements : Precision, Error and Truth. Second Edition. Chichester - New York - Brisbane - Toronto - Signapore : John Wiley & Sons, (91985). Pp (6),vii-xiii,(1),1-159,(3). Index. 8vo, black and grey paper covered boards, lettered in white. "Undergraduate students of physics and engineering need to develop an understanding of the nature of random experimental errors and of how to present experimental results, taking proper account of these errors. This book is designed as a laboratory workbook, introducing simple ideas within the reader's experience and building upon them in order to enable students to present results in a clear and accurate manner, before mastering the underlying theory. Confidence in using statistical methods in practical situations is established by this 'common sense' approach, encouraging the student to progress to more complex theoretical concepts. All the mathematical techniques required are developed in thebook so reference to other texts is not necessary. Problems and examples a re provided at the ends of sections, in order not to disturb the flow of the narrative, and a summary of the main results needed for practical purposes is given at the end of the book." Beautifully presented and well researched, the author brings to life a remarkable piece of Nova Scotia history that was all but lost. "Yes, Virginia - there really was a Shubenacadie Canal in Nova Scotia. It extended 115 kilometers, all the way from Dartmouth Cove on the north side of Halifax Harbour, inland through a series ofseven freshwater lakes, to the mouth of the tidal Shubenacadie River and on into the surging Bay of Fundy. One of the greatest engineering feats of the nineteenth century, it required two inclined planes, nine locks, and one deep-cut channel. The canal took thirty-five years to complete and was in operation for a decade." -from the rear cover.
