Maps. 8vo, illustrated green stapled wrappers. Includes: A. Morrison's "Landform Studies in the Middle Hamilton River Area, Labrador" (pp 272-275) - Desscribes 1961-1962 investigations mainly todetermine the events responsible for a system of canyons in the Grand Fall s area. Directions of ice movement, orientation and composition of till-fabric, and patterned ground were examined; samples from peat bogs were analyzed and radiocarbon-dated. It is tentatively concluded that: the landforms were shaped by ice movements from the southwest and later the northwest; andmost of the canyon formation occurred before deglaciation (about 5700 yrs ago) while the level of the ice surface and the water table within the ice were falling, and the ratio of water to ice increasing. 30 ARMS, Myron Riddle of the Ice : A Scientific Adventure into the Arctic. in dj.
Doubleday, New York, 1998, ISBN:0385490925
ARMS, Myron. Riddle of the Ice : A Scientific Adventure into the Arctic. New York : Doubleday, (1998). Pp 267 + [8] pp plates. Illustrated with maps to text. 8vo, black cloth spine with dark grey paper covered boards. "[...] this nautical adventure aboard a fifty-foot sailboat charts the bleakest and most awesome landscape on our planet - and one man's fierce will to understand it. By any account, the impenetrable barrier of the sea ice that blocked the Brendan's Isle halfway up the Labrador coast should not have been there in July, in what was one of the hottest summers on record a few hundred miles to the south. Frustrated and mystified at having to turn back so early in his 1991 northbound voyage, sailor Myron Arms became determined to explain the unsettling anomaly. Three years later, having pursued this obsession from the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution to Columbia's Lamont-Doherty Observatory to NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center, Arms took his fifty-foot sailboat and a small crew back up the coast to test his ideas - this time making it past the Arctic Circle." - from the dust jacket.
